36 Boston Evening Globe Tuesday, December 13, 1977 II DEATHS DEATHS DEATHS DEATHS OBITUARIES Rites tomorrow for Joseph Drapkin, pioneer in supermarket sales was 71 It I Vir, til Funeral services for Joseph Drapkin, 71, a pioneer in the supermarket method of food selling, will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Stanetsky-Schlossberg-Solomon Memoriel Chapel. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon. Mr. Drapkin, who lived on Commonwealth avenue, West Newton, died Monday in St.

Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton after a long illness. He was born in Russia in 1906. After the death of his father, his mother brought her five children to New York. Mr. Drapkin's formal education ended in the seventh grade.

When he was 14 his mother moved, to Springfield, where he went to work for a wholesale meaf distributor. Friends in Concord suggested there was a service to be performed in delivering meats directly to customers. So, as a young man, He drove his pickup truck to the Boston market area, bought meat and produce and delivered them in the Concord and Waltham areas.
