By BOB ROBERTSON The Knights of Columbus sewed up first place in the Junior Division of the Junior Basketball league Saturday afternoon as they defeated Bill's Sport Shop, 19 to 11 The Presbyterians moved into a tie for second with Bill's by defeating the Baptists, 30 to 18.

In the other game Saturday, Methodists knocked over the Democrat-Herald five, 24 to 16. The feature game of the afternoon between Bill's and the K. C. team was far from being the score-fest that it was predicted to be as both teams played ragged ball with numerous fouls being called. The advantage of a dearth of scoring on the part of the Sportsmen to roll up a 12 to 2 halftone lead.

BUI'S took spark in the second half and outscored their opponents but were unable to overcome the big lead their opponents had built up. Top scorers for the game were Tommy Moore, Ray Derrah of the Knights and John Cathey of Bill's with six tallies each. 4 Presbyterians Win The Presbyterians rolled into a second place tie as they piled up a 30 to 18 margin over the Baptists. Led by Bex Stamps and La Verne Bradley, the blue and white church team had little trouble with their opponents. Holding only a 11 to 7 halftime lead, the Presbyterians rolled up a 25 to 10 third quarter score.

Stamps led all scorers with eight points, followed by Larry Dryden of the Baptists and La Verne Bradley of Presbyterians with seven. The Methodists found it a hard task to down a fighting Democrat-Herald team. Having the smallest team in the league did not bother the paper carriers Saturday as they controlled the backboards much of the time, but were unable to hit their shots. The winner of this tourney will be the district's representative at the state tournament in McMinn-ville Feb. 28 through March 3.

But even if a local team manage to go all the way and walk through the state competition for a berth in the nationals at Oklahoma City, it will only be half the honor it could be if a good crowd doesn't turn out for this district play. This year McMinnville has the state tournament; last year Oregon City had it, and next year Albany could have it, A bid will be put in from here to gather together 16 of the best amateur basketball teams in the state, but we won't have a chance unless we can show good attendance from the previous year so that the tournament fathers will be satisfied that there's money to be made in Albany. Jt's not asking any sacrifice of local sports fans to turn out for this district tournament because we'll guarantee them a good time. Ten teams are entered from Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties and we've seen enough of them play to know that there are some excellent ball teams ready to play here Feb. 14, 15, 16 and 18.

The Yew Creek Loggers of Corvallis are probably the team to watch. While they have a few losses against "them, most of their slips came before their team was quite complete and before they had worked themselves into a cooperating unit. Now they stand together with five ex-OSC varsity hoopsters leading the way Ward Paldan-lus, Jerry Krafve, Ernie Neal, Bob Labhart and Don Carey. They meet Albany Elks Tuesday night at 9 p. m.

in a game that promises to be one of the best of the tournament. The Elks, second-placers in the Albany City league, have Improved a lot from the first of the season and at that time they were one. of the best In the league. A "hot" night could easily givt them a win over the Loggers because they'll have little trouble working the ball into shooting position. The Elks use an effective screen-and-hand-off offense that, because of the- good ball handling and screening, gets them shots from close In.

And when Sam Erb and Tom Abraham get that ball in close to the basket it's a pretty good chance that it will go through the hoop. That's the featured game of the first round although there ars two others that promise to be top entertainment for fans. First National Bank of Albany plays Wilson Motors of Corvallis in the first tilt and the high-ranking Arnett's team from Albany will meet Siletz at 8 p. m. The rest of the tournament will see the entry of Heekart's of Corvallis after a first round bye as well as Maloney-Chambers of Albany, Sweet Home and Lebanon Elks.

All are considered topflight teams and we have no doubt that the tournament is going to be a rousing success. One of the biggest problems in providing good entertainment was to have been the officiating, but District Commissioner Vince Barrett got the wires hot and picked off three excellent refs in the person of Terry McGrath and Dallas Norton, Corvallis, and Lee Carden, Albany. All three men are experienced officials and that's important in a tournament of this nature. Admission has been held to a minimum to allow persons to see. all the games each night for a reasonable price.

Only 50 cents is being charged adults and 25 cents of children, there's plenty for your money. Three games are on tap for the first two nights with two the third night and one the fourth. The whole tournament of nine games can be seen for $2.00. Cheap at any price. This is Albany's big chance to do something about its slack basketball situation.

If we get that state tournament here it will revive interest in, the sport and make it as successful as other sports ara and should be in a city of this size. EUGENE, Feb. 13.
