The possibility that Jesus was kidnapped as the result of a drug dispute involving family members or people associated with them is one of several scenarios being considered by police. tar v- "IX 7 I LYNN The father of missing 6-year-old Jesus De La Cruz was once accused of abusing the boy and allegedly threatened to take him away from his mother, court records show. Police are investigating the allegations against Juan De La Cruz, 32, as part of a widespread probe into the boy's disappearance nearly two weeks ago, sources familiar with the investigation confirmed yesterday. Authorities have checked the whereabouts of Juan De La Cruz and are satisfied that he was home in Miami at the time Jesus disappeared, said a source close to the investigation. He has been interviewed op several occasions by authorities but is not considered a suspect at this time, officials said. Repeated attempts yesterday to reach De La Cruz, who arrived here last week from Miami, were unsuccessful.

In November 1994, Jesus' mother, Magdalena Rodriguez, 37, obtained a restraining order against Re La Cruz, alleging that he abused her. The court ordered Juan De La (fjruz not to abuse her and to surrender the keys to their Park Street apartment, records show. "He has said that he will kill me if he has to, to avoid us getting separated," Magdalena Rodriguez said in fier request for court protection. "He threatened me that he will take my fMds away and I will never see them again." Vi. Eight months later, Rodriguez asked the court to drop the orders, Saying the couple had worked things out.

Earlier in 1994, New York child Welfare authorities had accused Juan De La Cruz of abusing five children in the couple's care, including Jesus'. The charges were dismissed, but Juan De La Cruz was placed under the supervision of child welfare authorities for one year, records show. 9: The allegations against De La Gruz surfaced as authorities intensified their scrutiny of Jesus' family ftid friends. Both of the boy's parents have ljeen interviewed several times by police' and are in daily contact with investigators, either by telephone or i'n person. On Friday, Rodriguez failed part of a polygraph test when investigators asked her if she had any knowl- N.H.

inmate tells story of abuse, death ASSOCIATED PRESS CONCORD, N.H. When June Briand lectures about domestic violence at schools and college campuses across New Hampshire, she tells students that abusive relationships don't have to end the way hers i did, with a funeral and a mur- der conviction. Briand, 33, is serving a 15- year to life sentence for shooting her husband James four times in the head while he slept on Feb. 12, 1987. Briand said she acted in self-defense after beiner beaten and sexual- ly abused throughout her six- year marriage.

The lectures are part of her state-supervised rehabilitation. "I am the result of what happens when you don't know how to get help," she said Tuesday from the state wom- en's prison in Goffstown. "My -r situation is very scary, and I think it really gets the message through to them." Briand believes the counseling and education she has received duriner nearly 10 1 years in prison has led to her rehabilitation. She hopes Gov. Stephen E.

Merrill and the Executive Council will decide this month to schedule a par-h don hearing so she can plead her case for forgiveness and freedom. "I'm asking for the chance to take another look at it 10 years later, after we've all had a lot of education about domestic abuse," Briand said. "I'm asking them to take another look at June Briand and who she is 10 years later." 1i Kt? mi laiKit K.e h.m.i Is yyyy 33S3SL ''iMit 4 j- zf.
