By Judy Foreman GLOBE STAFF Funeral services will be held today for Esther (Seidman) Rome, a founding member of the Boston Women's Health Book Collective and a co-author of the group's bestsellers "Our Bodies, Ourselves" and "The New Our Bodies, Ourselves," who died yesterday at her Somerville home of breast cancer. She was 49.

For more than 25 years, Mrs. Rome was a staunch and articulate advocate for women's health, arguing that body image, cosmetic sur-. gery, nutrition, eating disorders and sexually transmitted diseases were issues of culture and economic policy as much as medicine. She was a frequent critic of the ways the medical system and the media treat women. But she was also a journalist's dream.

Reachable day or night, always within arm's reach of studies on everything from silicone breast implants to tampons to breast cancer, she would rattle off medical arcana at. machine-gun speed, becoming a staple of stories on women's health in newspapers and national television broadcasts. She kept working on her latest book, "Risking Health for Love," co-authored with Jane Hyman, until just days before she died. And she kept a perennially sharp eye on any bureaucracy from hospital to federal government that ignored women. It became clear in 1980, for instance, that tampons were linked to toxic shock syndrome.

"Rome sunk her teeth into the issue and wouldn't let go," Pearson said. "She worked on tampon safety for eight years before she got the FDA US Food and Drug Administration to require manufacturers to standardize their terms for absor-bency," Pearson said. Government warnings had told women to minimize risk of toxic shock by using the least absorbent tampons possible, but the absorbency of tampons marked "super" or "regular" varied wildly from brand to brand. In the early 1990s, Mrs. Rome served as a consumer representative on the FDA's committee that investigated the potential dangers of silicone breast implants and led to the FDA commissioner's partial implant ban.

She also ran a support group for women with problems resulting from implants. Mrs. Rome was born in Norwich, Conn. She graduated cum laude in 1966 from Brandeis University and in 1968 earned a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In 1969, a time when, as she would put it a decade later in a Globe Frank Kopelman, 86 Was special justice, lawyer Frank Kopelman of Palm Beach, a retired lawyer and special justice, died Friday in St Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach.

He was 86. Born in Lithuania, Mr. Kopelman came to America as a child and settled in Boston with his family. He graduated from Boston University Law School in 1933 and Harvard Law School in 1934. In 1936 he was appointed a special justice of the First District Court of Barnstable, a job he held until his retirement in 1979.

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, he served as chief legal counsel to the state Securities and Exchange Commission. In the mid-1940s he worked at the law firm of Hale, Sanderson, Byrnes and Morton in Boston until his retirement. He was an instructor at both Boston University and Boston College law schools for many years. He was named a fellow at both Brandeis and Boston universities and was a trustee of Congregation Kehillath Israel of Brookline and Beth Israel Hospital for many years. He also was a past chairman of the Lawyer's Division of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies in earlier years.

A former Brookline resident, he was a longtime member of Belmont Country Club and Palm Beach Country Club in Florida. He leaves his wife, Ruth L. (Kor-itzky); three sons, Arie L. of New York City, David H. and Robert both of Newton; and seven grandchildren.

A consummate newspaperman, he gave some thought during his illness to what his epitaph might be. This was what Mr. Batten settled on: "He took care of his family. He took care of his company." "Jim's death is a grievous loss -for his family and many friends, for Knight-Ridder and for the larger journalistic community that he loved so very much," said P. Anthony Rid-der, president and chief executive officer of Knight-Ridder.

"At his core, he was a journalist, one who believed passionately in the good that can come from a strong, free and prosperous press." Last September, a few months after his illness was diagnosed, Mr. Batten summarized his approach to newspapering and, perhaps, his approach to life. "Loving our communities, warts and all, is not something most of us were taught growing up in the newspaper business," he said. "But getting close to your community and your readers is an essential part of the job." During his 20 years in South Florida, Mr. Batten helped lead efforts to recover from Hurricane Andrew, fight crime, heal racial and ethnic divisions and diversify the community's leadership.

He played a pivotal, dual role in the community a role fraught with potential pitfalls. He actively participated in civic life and he also ran the company that owns the Miami Herald, which regularly covered the activities of South Florida's civic leaders. Mr. Batten first worked as a cub reporter for the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer in 1957. He joined Knight-Ridder's Washington bureau in 1965, covering George Wallace's political campaigns, Martin Luther King's struggle for racial equality and the Ku Klux Klan's terrorist activities in the South.

After serving as an assistant city editor for the Detroit Free Press and executive editor of the Charlotte Observer, he was named president of the company on 1982. Six years later, he became Knight-Ridder's chief executive officer. He leaves his wife, Jean; three children, Mark, Laura and Taylor; his mother, Jo; a brother, Robert; and two granddaughters.
