By Tom Strong Special to the Globe Sophomore Kelly Ryan out-dueled freshman Jeff Wiley In a battle of backup quarterbacks yesterday as Yale stunned Holy Cross with a last-minute touchdown to post a 19-15 win before 22.439 at the Yale Bowl. Ryan replaced Mike Curtin with less than two minutes remaining and the Elis facing a third down and 1 1 from their 33-yard line. He hooked up with tight end Dean Athanasia for a first down and then drove Yale 56 yards, the final 8 coming on a diving catch in the end zone by wing-back Mike Stewart with 28 seconds left. It was the seventh straight victory for Yale at the Bowl and snapped the Crusaders' two-game winning streak. Overshadowed by Yale's comeback was Holy Cross running back Gill Fenerty.

who gained 182 yards on 26 carries. With 3.120 yards, he surpassed Yale's Dick Jauron for fifth place among New England career leaders. He also has 525 carries as a Crusader, a school mark. Yale's winning drive began with 2:34 left. Holy Cross coach Rick Carter had elected to punt rather than attempt a fourth-and-1 play on the Yale 42.

TD Athenasla, 6 78 0 Morlarty, 3 68 1 Stewart, 3 56 1 Macauley, 3 11 0 senior, injured his left knee, forcing Yale coach Carm Cozza to insert Ryan. Despite the pressure, Cozza said he had no qualms about Ryan. "From the first day," said Cozza. "I've told both Mike and Kelly that we had two No. 1 quarterbacks." Ryan completed 5 of 8 passes for 48 yards but it was one that went incomplete that riled Carter.

With one minute remaining, the Elis had marched to the Holy Cross 37. On third and 10, Ryan looked over the middle to Athanasia, who was well covered. Ryan's pass was a little behind the tight end and fell incomplete, but the officials ruled that Athanasia had been interfered with, giving Yale new life on the Crusader 21. "I vehemently disagree with that call." said Carter. "It was an uncatchable pass and our man just shadowed the ball." Holy Cross moved the ball effectively, primarily on the ground, as Fenerty and fullback Chuck Doyle exploited an inexperienced defensive line.

Three times in the opening quarter Holy Cross moved inside the Yale 35. Each time, however, a turnover ended the threat. Linebacker Mike Ryan intercepted a Dave Hock pass to end Holy Cross' first drive; safety Mike Tjarkeen jumped in front of flanker Leo Carlin in the end zone to steal another pass; and Fenerty mishandled a pitch that middle guard Rufus Davenport recovered on the Yale 23. Following Davenport's recovery, Curtin connected with split end Kevin Morlarty on a 40-yard touchdown bomb at 1:50 of the second quarter. On Yale's next series, tailback Ted Macauley capped a 13-play, 55-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run off left tackle.

John Duryea missed both extra-point kicks. Fenerty scored Holy Cross' first touchdown on a 6-yard run in the third quarter after Yale's Mike Steward had fumbled on the Eli 33. The Crusaders took a 14-12 lead on the final play of the quarter when Wiley found split end Lee Hull with a 60-yard pass.
