-v, 'A i-i ii In 1971, he married Audrey (Williams) Hildreth, with whom he traveled extensively. In 1981, in the 50th reunion report of his class at Harvard, he wrote, "I am thankful to have lived most of my life at a time when we didn't have to lock our doors or windows: we could read, talk or work in the evening without the distractions of radio and TV; most people did an honest day's work without two or more coffee breaks; boys looked like boys and girls like girls; and taxes took away only a small part of our income." In his report, he included a copy of "A Prayer for the Middle-aged," which he kept on his desk for more than 40 years, and whose author, he claimed, was unknown. It begins: "Lord, Thou knowest better than I know myself that I am growing older and will some day be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody's affairs.

Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end." Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Elizabeth C. Hurlbut of Indianapolis; two sons, Edward N. Chase of Worcester and Samuel P. Chase of Chelmsford; and four grandchildren.
