The defending league champ was a shell of its former self: 69 yards total offense and 0 for 9 on third-down conversions in the first half. "Offensively, that was a horrible performance by us," said Princeton coach Steve Tosches. off the field after failing to advance the ball on downs. That made yesterday's 89th meeting of Harvard and Princeton as suspense-filled as Dragnet: The teams combined for 13 fumbles and 137 yards total offense in the first half. But Harvard scored on an 63-yard interception APPHOTO Bucknell receiver Ardle Klssenger squeezes out yards against Holy Cross. Bucloi IB responsibility for that, I have no excuses for it. We needed to do something to get that first spark, and we didn't do anything." That made for a listless crowd of 14,410 which perked up slightly during halftime when three naked men ran onto the field during the Harvard band's performance.

They eluded several tackles from security before being corraled and escorted out of the stadi return by free safety Derek Yankoff in the second quarter, giving it the advantage entering the second half. The Crimson offense improved after mission, adding two touchdowns and a goal to turn a close contest into a 24-0 Ivy League rout. For Harvard (3-3, 1-2) the win was one of its most lopsided at Palmer Stadium, which will be razed at season's end. It marked the first time Harvard has registered a shutout since blanking Conf. loly Cross Yale Nov. 21, 1992. It was Harvard's first shutout of Princeton at Palmer since 1986 and Princeton's first shutout by an Ivy League school since 1973. "This game was a testament to the resilience of our kids," said Harvard coach Tim Murphy, whose team practiced on Boston College's artificial turf last week because its fields were soaked from flooding. Perhaps that was one of the reasons Harvard struggled to move on Princeton's natural grass in the first half, gaining just 68 yards.

"In the first half we tried to spread them out," said Murphy, "and they did a pretty good job keeping us off balance." But the Harvard defense stepped up, as Yankoff intercepted a pass from Princeton quarterback Brett Budzinski at the 37 and eluded several tackles to reach the end zone. "I got a decent read on the quarterback and end- While Princeton continued its listless play in the second half, Harvard, led by running back Eion Hu (32 carries, 127 yards), began to move the ball. With 8:37 left in the game, the Crimson capped an 11-play, 54-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Rich Linden to wide receiver Mark Drakos to produce a 14-0 lead. After Budzinski was intercepted on Princeton's next drive, Harvard made it 17-0 with 5:14 left on a 36-yard field goal by Ryan Korinke, who missed a 27-yard attempt in the third quarter. Harvard capped its scoring with 32 seconds left as Chris Men-ick scored on a 1-yard run.

"That spread of 24-0 is not indicative of how well our defense played," said Tosches. "It's a shame. Our defense played very well and just didn't get any help from the other side of the ball." It marks the third time in four seasons Harvard has been 3-3 after six games. lum. 1 "'tr I.
