(Bloomberg) Trial of ex-financier Vesco to start today Fugitive US financier Robert Vesco, detained in Cuba a year ago, will go on trial in Havana today on charges of fraud and other economic crimes, facing a possible prison term of 20 years. The official news agencies Prensa Latina and AIN quoted state prosecutor Edelmira Pedris as saying the case centered on charges Vesco defrauded foreign investors in a scam that jeopardized the prestige of Cuba's pharmaceuticals industry.

Vesco had obtained funds from foreigners for a project to develop a' medical drug behind the government's back, she said. Vesco, living in Cuba since 1982, was arrested at his Havana home in May 1995. The 60-year-old former financier has been charged in the US with stealing about $224 million from an international mutual fund and is also under indictment in the US for cocaine trafficking. He fled in 1973 and is said to have lived in the Bahamas and Costa Rica before moving to Cuba. (Reuters) tn: BG801) (At or visit our web site.

-gi days, Transit said. Twenty First Century would spend about 3Vfe years building the line and operate and maintain it for 15 years, said Raytheon spokesman Ed Powers. Raytheon stock rose 1 to 48Vfe. (Bloomberg) US stocks advance; Mass. index also rises A tame economic reading helped lower interest rates in the bond market, lifting stocks yesterday.

But investors, fearful of the unexpected in the week's remaining economic reports, continued to favor blue-chip issues and shy away from more speculative shares. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 46.98 points to 5528.91, the blue-chip measure's first close above 5500 since the market's steep selloff two weeks ago on inflation and corporate profit worries. For the second straight session, stocks took their cue from the bond market, where growing optimism for mild inflation helped send interest rates on the 30-year Treasury back below 7 percent to 6.97 percent from 7.03 percent Tuesday and 7.09 percent Monday. Bond traders, concerned about inflationary trends that would make fixed-income investments less valuable, were heartened by news that a survey of purchasing managers in northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana, one of the nation's largest industrial regions, suggested some moderation in the manufacturing sector's growth. Massachusetts stocks rose for a second day, led by Hologic after the maker of medical X-ray systems reported higher-than-expected profits.

The Bloomberg Massachusetts Index rose 1.51 to 135.27. Shares of Waltham-based Hologic rose 4Vi to 38 after the company said it earned 32 cents a share in the fiscal third quarter, higher than the forecast of 27 cents, according to a survey of six analysts by Zacks Investment Research. Parametric Technology which rose to 415s after Goldman, Sachs Co. added the company to its "priority list" of stock investments. Parametric, also based in Waltham, makes software for automating mechanical design.

American Radio to buy two more Mass. stations Boston-based American Radio Systems Corp. said it signed an agreement to buy two radio stations in Massachusetts for $24.8 million. The radio stations are WAAF-FM in Boston and WWTM-AM in Worcester, owned by closely held Zapis Communications. American Radio Systems owns four other radio stations in Boston WBMX-FM, WEGQ-FM, WRKO-AM and WEEI-AM.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval. American Radio Systems will be managing the stations under a local marketing agreement that began yesterday. The purchase agreement Tuesday would be the third acquisition in as many weeks for the company. On July 25, it agreed to buy radio stations KXOA-AM and KWPT-FM in Sacramento, for $50 million. The week before it agreed to buy FM stations KNAX and KRBT in Fresno, for $11 million.

The company owns or manages 32 FM and 18 AM stations in the US. Shares of American Radio Systems fell 1V4 to 38. (Bloomberg) Raytheon-Itochu team close to $l26b contract A joint venture of Raytheon Co. and Japan's Itochu Corp. is poised to receive a $1.26 billion contract to build and operate a New Jersey commuter rail line, the first such agreement of its kind in the nation.

The accord would require the group to design, build, operate and maintain an initial 10-mile segment of the planned 20.5-mile line. The use of a single provider for all four services marks the first time such a contract was reached for a major transit project in the US, NJ Transit said. NJ Transit also said the Raytheon group will receive the contract later this summer pending an environmental study by the Federal Transit Administration. Transit's board on Monday chose the proposal submitted by Twenty First Century Rail which is 70 percent-owned by Lexington-based Raytheon and 30 percent-owned by Japanese companies including Itochu.
