He worked as a scout for more than 20 years with the California Angels, Cubs and Red Sox. Born in the Bronx, Monzon lived in Miami and was popular throughout Latin America. According to Red Sox scouting director Wayne Britton, who hired Monzon two years ago following his long stint in a similar position with the Chicago Cubs, Monzon was the passenger in a car driven by an istv inmm iMraste 1991. The Red Sox also appear ready to wrap up the signing of outfielder Alex Cole today. Cole would become the backup center fielder once Ken Ryan, Lee Tinsley and another player (possibly Glenn Murray) are dealt to the Phillies for 1 I other Red Sox scout, John Candelaria (not the former pitcher), which collided with an oncoming car. Monzon was killed instantly. Candelaria was in serious condition at a Santo Domingo hospital, but according to Britton, "It looks like he's going to make it." SUNDAY BRUNCH 12-3 PM He never has competed in the steeplechase but has targeted it because of "a lack of depth" in the potential qualifying field. "The steeplechase was always the best race for me," Prince said. "But I never did it. I always ran the mile and 5,000 meters.

When I went to Boston College, I did not have the opportunity because the team needed me in other events. "I'm ready to go and do whatever it takes to get to the Olympic Trials. I'm not worried about the hurdles because of my leaping ability. I'm 5-8, but I've been known to dunk a basketball." Prince also is coaching at Cambridge Rindge Latin School. On Saturday, he spent seven hours coaching at a high school meet.

He appears purposeful and talented enough to challenge for an Olympic berth. "The steeplechase is a natural for a miler," said Bill Squires, coach for the Liberty AC. "A miler should have the strength for the steeplechase and the barriers sometimes serve as a diversion. You can train for it around here by placing barriers in the outer lane of an indoor track at the right distances." Prince would become the first local participant in the Olympic steeplechase, Squires said. Only John Gregorek and Bruce Bickford have excelled in the event.

Gregorek qualified for the 1980 Olympics, boycotted by the US, and Bickford switched to the 10,000 meters. 350 Washington Dedham 326-9000. FOUR The Greater Boston Track Club Invitational Mile during the 18th Commonwealth Invitational served as little more than a training exercise for Jamal Prince yesterday. Prince won the race in 4 minutes 5 seconds slower than he had expect-'ed.

"I'm not a pacer," said Prince, who led from the start at the vard University Gordon Track facility. "I go whatever the pace is and it was too slow. I wanted to go faster, but I can't do it by myself. "I never take the lead in a race like that. But once I was committed, I kept looking at the clock and trying to contain myself so that someone else would get annoyed and go by me.

I needed that to wake me up." Prince surrendered the lead briefly in the final 200 meters, then sprinted past Central Massachusetts Striders teammate Andrew Cleary and Mike Hampton of the Boston Running Club. "Sixty seconds for the last quarter is good, though," he said. "I've run a 4:03, so I know I can do better. I felt frustrated while I was running, but I can't complain." Prince is going to need as much training as possible. His goal is to qualify for the US Olympic Trials in the steeplechase, a difficult event to prepare for in any climate but complicated by New England weather conditions.
