Moore He's Ahmad Rashad Harrisburg '5' eyes Hawaii trip EUGENE, Ore. AP) They scratched the name Bobby Moore from the National Football League. Which Isn't alarming. They almost scratched the name Ahmad Rashad, Whlch.ls alarming. A name Is a name is a name until it's Ahmad Rashad.

Then it's different. Rashad started the season on the bench of the St. Louis Cardinals. The name on the back of the shirt may' be "Rashad" but the body, the speed and the quickness is still Bobby Moore, the former University of Oregon star. This summer came a new awareness for Moore, an adoption of the Orthodox Muslim religion and a subsequent change of name.

It also brought a demotion, almost an end to a career. "I don't know what to think," Rashad said from his St. Louis apartment, "but I went from a starter one day to the bench the next and the whole thing coincided with my name change." "Really," he said, "the people in St. Louis booed me when I was introduced as Ahmad Rashad. "I don't think they understand.

I think they think I'm a Black Muslim or something. I just don't know." Rashad said. "The person who influenced me the most was Kareem Jabbar (formerly Lew Alcindor). "I found something solid in life to hang on to. For the first time, I have a peace of mind." In Orthodox Muslim, he said, "you don't have to change your name.

Basically, it's a sacrifice. And it's a way to make you more cognizant of It wasn't a popular move. Definitely not with the fans. Maybe not even with the coaches. "I wish people knew a little bit more about our religion," he said.

"There is no race or creed, no rich or poor. The only people who are better than any others are the people who are more pious and consequently closer to God. "It is exactly the opposite of the Black Muslims." Rashad has a strange confidence that everything will work out well. It is unusual that first-round draft choices sit on the bench, especially a guy who was the fourth player picked in the entire draft. Rashad is playing more now and he likes Coryell's offense.

It's "a very exciting offense," he said. "The coaches let you do what you want to do. There's less tension than before." In the weeks after Moore changed his name, he fell behind Mel Gray on the depth chart and was subsequently shifted to running back Only after issuing a "play me or trade me ultimatum" was he reinstated as a wide receiver. After weeks of inactivity, he finally played in St. Louis' surprising win over Washington.

He hopes to play more and more. "Without my religion I'd be really down now," he said, "but I'm very confident things will work out. I know I'm going to play. I'm a person who has a lot of ability and I've got God on my side. You can't beat that combination." As a person of just average faith last year, Bobby Moore finished 29th among National Conference receivers, catching 29 passes for 500 yards and three touchdowns.

He was named to the NFL all-rookie team and set a league record with a 98-yard nonscoring pass reception. With the addition this season of new and pass-happy Don Coryell as head coach, Moore seemed in perfect position. Coryell began reshaping the Cardinals when religion began reshaping Bobby Moore. "It actually began when I was at Oregon," a year ago while Mel Larkin was athletic director at Harrisburg. He is presently superintendent of the Lowell school District.

No school district funds are being used for the trip which will be, supported entirely by the participants and proceeds from various events. Presently, those going to Hawaii include a 12-member basketball team, five members of the rally squad and seven girls on the dance line. A "powder puff" football game is being planned for Saturday at 8 p.m. in Harrisburg between the women of Harrisburg and Monroe. A spaghetti feed and an' auction are also planned in the near future.

HARRISBURG Basketball season isn't too far away, but for Harrisburg High School, it may not be close enough. The Eagles are planning a trip to Hawaii. "I'm looking forward to it," admitted coach Dave Shelby of the Harrisburg plans' to fly to the Islands in December during Christmas vacation. Members of the team, rally squad and dance line have been holding various fund raising projects to raise approximately $2,500 for the four-day trip. Harrisburg will play two games against schools of comparable size.

"We hope Co do a little sight seeing, too," added Shelby. Plans for the trip originated AHMAD RASHAD Moore adopts religion LIMOUSINE Peking Reds vs. Yankees? "There is no reason why not." Travel is virtually no problem. The flying time from Seattle to Tokyo is less than six' hours. West Coast major league teams already are flying more than five hours to get to the East Coast.

Japanese baseball is very well developed and well supported. A number of American ex-major leaguers are playing for Japanese teams. As far as is known, the sport has not been introduced in Mainland China, but Taiwan has an extensive program, and the Taiwan entry in the Little League World Series has won two straight World Titles. Kuhn sees the possibility of three major leagues, the Pacific League plus two others. He also says realignment of the leagues could lead to divisional playoffs involving seven games instead of five.

A number of U.S. cities, including New Orleans and Seattle, are building domed stadia. Kuhn would not speculate on when such cities would get major league teams, but said those two certainly are in the expansion picture. Kuhn mentioned the NEW YORK (AP)-It is October 1984. The opening game of the World Series matches the Peking Reds and the New York Preposterous? Not at all, says Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn.

Kuhn says he expects more major league expansion in the next few years, and he'd like to see Japanese teams in the American majors right now. "It would certainly be possible to have a Pacific League, with American teams from the West. Coast and Honolulu, Japanese teams like Tokyo and Osaka and perhaps Taiwan and Manila. "And, can Peking be far behind?" asked the commissioner in an interview Monday. His remark was half in jest and half serious.

With improved relations between the West and Mainland China and with air travel speeds increasing all the time, there is no reason why athletic teams from the Orient could not compete regularly with Western Hemisphere teams. Kuhn said baseball is on the verge of expansion perhaps not immediately, but not before too long. He mentioned such cities as Toronto, Seattle, New Orleans and Mexico City as prime candidates. 22 Avoiloblf Variety Strtion and Auto Ctnttr CHICAGO (AP) Joe Cronin, whose 14-year reign as president of the American League included broad and sweeping changes, is expected to step aside in favor of Lee MacPhail today at a meeting of league owners. Cronin, 67, has two years to go on his present term, but will finish the commitment as chairman of the board of the American League with MacPhail gradually assuming the duties of president. MacPhail, former general manager of the Baltimore Orioles, currently holds a similar role with the New York Yankees. Cronin became the American League's fourth president in 1959 when he succeeded the late Will Harridge. During his term as president, the American League expanded to 12 teams, eventually split into two divisions and early this year adopted the controversial designated hitter rule.

League owners two years ago voted a resolution ordering Cronin to hire an administrative assistant who would be capable of replacing the league president but Cronin made no such move. "I don't know if it's up or down," said Cronin recently when asked if he would step down as league president. "We haven't come to any Available Auto Center .833 .667 .333 .250 .250 Washington Dallas St. Louis NY Giants Philadelphia "When they extended my contract through 1975, it was with the understanding that I would give up the job when they found a qualified successor. Nobody's been selected yet." Apparently, the league owners have decided on MacPhail, son of the legendary Larry MacPhail who owned the Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers and introduced night baseball in the major leagues at Cincinnati.

MacPhail admitted talk that he would replace Cronin "has been going around for a long time. If and when the job is open and if it were to be offered to me, I would certainly have to consider it." Cronin has had every drea-mable success in the game. He was the AL's most valuable player in 1930 with the Washington Senators. He was named player-manager in 1933 and led the team to a pennant. A year later he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for Lyn Lary and $250,000 the highest price ever paid for a 'player at the time.

He managed the Red Sox through 1947, including a pennant in 1946 and in 1948 he was named the team's general manager. Cronin was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1956 and three years later took over the league's presidency.
