Those who have been riding the line for generations before it got its color code may see a revival of an old mezzanine and stairway that once accommodated passengers at the old Scollay Square Station. Scollay Square during 1 World War II in particular was well known to tens of thousands of military servicemen for its all-night movie theaters, cafeterias, strip joints and bars. MBTA designers would like to see the old Scollay Square Station stairways used to create new Government Center Station entrances at the Center Plaza office complex and at the nonfunctional water fountain in City Hall Plaza. At Wood Island in East Boston, work crews have already begun demolishing the bus and train station, which will be replaced by a new ground-level facility. An elevated bus turnaround loop will be replaced by a ground-level covered passenger pickup area and turnaround loop off Bennington Street.

Rapid transit passengers would also enter and board at ground level, rather than walking up a ramp and then down several flights of stairs. "This station will be in complete compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act," said Karen E. Arpino, design manager at the MBTA. The station is scheduled to reopen by the end of 1997. Wood Island, Arpino said, also would be used as a backup to Airport Station should that facility have to be closed during construction.

Airport Station, too, would become a ground-level station. The shuttle bus viaduct that serves the airline terminals now is being taken by the Central Artery-Tunnel project. "We are talking with Massport and the CAT people about the possibility of a people mover that would serve the airline terminals and the hotels connecting with Airport Station," she said. At Aquarium Station, MBTA and Central Artery planners are beginning to coordinate construction scheduled to begin in early 1995. The roof of the station will eventually become the floor of the depressed Central Artery.

A short distance up the track at State Street Station, whose entrance is under the historic Old State House, designs are under way to create entrances at 60 and 53 State Arpino said. The proposed new Government Center entrances on Cambridge Street, Arpino said, would be just a few hundred feet away from the current Bowdoin entrance.
