South THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE SEPTEMBER 12, Sports Sports Notebook South region players make a mark in college football By Paul Harber OI.OIIK STAFF (' of key personnel from this area. At Western New England, there is Rockland's Rick Phelps. He came to WNEC to play hockey, but the football team needed a kicker. He tried out and earned all-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors for his football services. He also holds the distinction of playing for the college football team and the college hockey team on the same day.

His friend from Rockland, defensive back Brian Kelliher, is co-captain at WNEC. He is also chasing the school record for most career interceptions. He has picked off eight passes and needs two more this year. A third Rockland native, Jeff Armstrong, is the team's quarterback. At Springfield, there is a lot of local talent Last year, Marshfield's Sean Finucane was lost for the season in the first game because of injury.

This year he is healthy. Finucane is one of three captains at Springfield. All three are from the area. They include Hanson defensive back Keith Sweeney and Walpole linebacker John Griffin. Sweeney was a '92 preseason All-America choice because of his proclivity for picking off passes.

Griffin was selected the Most Improved Player, leading Springfield in tackles with 96. Another area standout on the squad is Scituate running back Joe Hayes, who scrambled for five touchdowns and 482 yards during part-time duty last year. To localize it even more, Plymouth's Joel Garrett plays fullback. It will be a busy autumn season for so many South area gridders. quarterback.

You can expect a great season from Hanover quarterback Bill Carven. He is one of 17 returning starters from last year's highly successful (7 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie) Nichols College squad. Protecting Carven on the offensive line is center Bill Daly of Sci-tuate. A big game for the Daly family is Oct 2. That's when Nichols plays Assumption.

Who is on the Assumption line? Bill's brother Tom Daly. Last year when the two squared off Nichols escaped with a 19-15 victory. Another college team that has its own Air Force South Area is the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Foxborough's James Winters will be throwing bombs to former Foxborough High teammate James Santucci and Abington's Bill McFar-land. It will be a potent offense.

Plymouth's Tom McDavitt will be the offensive threat at Trinity College. He is one of the top Division 3 wide receivers in New England. Colby coach Tom Austin is expecting big things from quarterback Mike Mannering of Walpole. His aerial attacks give the White Mules a double threat with ECAC Rookie of the Year running back Brad Smith. Cohasset's Pat Conroy and Hanover's Matt Landolfi are two reasons Wesleyan's defense won't give up many points.

Curry College ended on a bright note last full. After losing 17 straight games, the Colonels won two straight to end the season. This year, new coach Jerry Varnum will expect big things from running back Mark Bogan of Quincy. Western New England College and Springfield College have plenty 8 college football season 1 1 move8 'nt0 n'Kn ear tm8 MX week, the South area is well represented on all LA levels of play. The '93 season opened last week as Boston College took on the University of Miami, which was ranked as the fourth best team in the nation.

Miami lived up to its press clippings, throttling the Eagles, 23-7. Brockton's Darnell Campbell, who was one of the nation's most punishing running backs as a schoolboy, has blossomed into one of the East's top ball carriers. In the opener Campbell scored the Eagles' only touchdown against the Hurricanes. He is one of several area athletes on the Boston College roster. Besides Campbell, Foxborough's Tom Nalen and Braintree's Peter Kendall anchor the offensive line at center.

The O'Brien brothers, Joe and Tim, along with defensive back Rob Clifford are from Hanson. Freshman running back Omari Walker of Mansfield has made an impression on Eagles coach Tom Coughlin. While most of the area's top players are in the Northeast, Todd Wilson ventured to the Big Ten and was throwing touchdown passes for nationally ranked Michigan last weekend. Bridgewater State coach Peter Mazzaferro has plenty of talent returning from the most successful season in the school's history. Included among the returnees is first team Ail-American selection defensive end Erik Arthur.

Norwood's Jeff Putnam will call the plays at Marciano a victim of Si's cheap shots The Sports Illustrated story on the late heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Murdano of Brockton was a cheap shot Sure, he might not have been a Mr. Perfect. But he has been dead for nearly a quarter of a century. The only place he should be judged is in the ring, where he was unbeaten. I doubt a writer or anyone out of the public's eye could stand up to the scrutiny that celebrities must endure today.

East Bridgewater bowler Craig Holbrook will try again someday. He came very close to winning the WCVB-TV (Ch. 5) Candle-pin Championship last weekend in Haverhill. Trailing by 25 pins after seven frames, Holbrook put together a spare, strike, spare, strike and spare to pull within six pins. His fill on the final ball was a 5, leaving him one short.

It certainly qualifies as a fantastic finish. The talk of the Canadian Football League putting a franchise in Brockton was just that -talk. It was a dream. There isn't enough parking, the traffic in the area on game days would be horrendous and the stadium would be difficult to enlarge. However, it would have been worth it to see Doug Flutle throwing passes in New England again.

Carol DeCoureey, who has just been hired to coach field hockey at Merrimack College, began her sports career and later taught at Quincy College. Freshman Kert-Ann Cole, a former Oliver Ames runner from Easton, is competing for Merrimack College's cross-country team. Get well soon to Plymouth's Brad (Digger) Graber. A golf equipment salesman for Pro Group, his company has the hottest new set of irons, the Peerless PHDs. Graber's holding off a hernia operation so that he can fill out all his orders.

That's dedication. Athletes from area captain Tufts' teams Plymouth's Eric Desautels has been elected captain of the Tufts University men's cross-country team. He was the Jumbos' top finisher at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship (12th overall) and at the Thames River Invitational (second overall) last year. Desautels isn't the only local captaining a team at Tufts. Randolph's KrLsten Galante, a junior, was elected captain of the women's cross-country team.

She was Tufts' top finisher at the Codfish Bowl and the second finisher six times. Brockton's Meaghan O'DonnelL a senior, is captain of the Tufts women's soccer team. She is a returning defender on a squad that only once last season allowed another team to score more than two goals against them in a single game. Weymouth's Naney Daly and Easton's Amanda Dion are In the HC season opener last weekend, Brockton's Darnell Campbell scored the Eagles' only touchdown against Miami's Hurricanes.
