Yesterday at Harvard Stadium, the weaponry came in the form of heavy-duty tailback Chad Levitt, who ran 30 times for 227 yards and topped off his glittering show when he broke over right tackle from 1 yard out with 1:06 left to send the unbeaten Big Red to an 18-13 victory, their ninth straight over the Crimson. The win extended the longest run of mastery over Harvard in Crimson history and boosted the Big Red to 4-0 for the first time in 23 years.

Cornell improved to 2-0 in Ivy League play. The game came down to the Big Red's ability to control the ball in the second half despite several big plays by an aroused Crimson defense, and the inability of the Crimson to put together sustained drives when it counted. The Crimson (2-2, 1-1 Ivy League) managed only four of their 12 first downs in the second half. "They're two deep at every position," said Crimson coach Tim Murphy. "That's the way every team wants to be.

When you're not like that, you have to be perfect. You can't have penalties. You can't have turnovers. They're a very deep, mature and experienced team. We kept it close by flaying awful hard." The Crimson took a 13-9 lead into halftime and turned the show over to a glittering 75th anniversary performance by the Harvard band.

The Crimson returned to the field and surrendered a 35-yard field goal by John Rodin with 3:53 left in the third quarter and clung to the 13-12 edge until late in the game. The touchdown was set by Levitt's backup, Terry Smith, who raced up the right side to the 2. "We just said to take it one play at a time," said Big Red quarterback Steve Joyce, who completed 14 of 19 passes for 168 yards and one touch-.

down. "We knew we were the ball real well. We were just having trouble putting it in the strike zone." The Big Red seized a 9-0 lead in the first quarter on Rodin's 40-yard field goal (5:34) and Joyce's 24-yard pass to Erik Bjerke David St. Peter blocked the extra point. The Crimson cut it to 9-7 with 12:44 to go in the second quarter when Vin Ferrara threaded the nee-die through traffic to Mike Halligan at the goal line for a 9-yard touchdown pass and Patrick Hannon kicked the extra point.

With 5:06 left, Ferrara threw over the middle 7 yards to tight end Matt Gargulinski for a score but a try for two came up short. Levitt sent the Big Red on then-way to start the third quarter when he broke a tackle at the line and outran Matt Bradley, but St. Peter came across the field to knock him out at the 6. Doug Anderson then blocked Rodin's 20-yard field goal bid. Harvard's Brian Johnson came up with a fumble recovery to stall an early Big Red drive in the fourth' quarter, and later Clete Johnson recovered a Smith fumble at the Crimson 41.

Harvard failed to move, however, and Tim Griffin had to punt it away. With 4:14 left, the Big Red went to work behind its big and mobile offensive line. "We were just blowing them off the ball," said Levitt, "and I was just cleaning it up." N.E.
