Just one year ago against Dartmouth, Harvard quarterback Vin Ferrara came off mm the bench to relieve injured starter Mike Giardi, tight end Adam Golla was a center on the Crimson JV team and Tim Murphy was head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Big Green won, 39-33, and the Crimson were on their way to a season-ending five-game losing streak. They held a blockbuster of a Halloween party yesterday in Memorial Stadium as Ferrara completed 16 consecutive passes and 19 of 22 overall for 302 yards and three touchdowns, and Golla caught a fluky double deflection for a 58-yard touchdown that turned the game around as the Crimson (4-3, 2-2 in the Ivy League) frolicked their way to a 35-12 victory, their first win over Dartmouth (3-4, 1-3) since 1989. i It was Harvard's most significant win since a 37-20 surprise at Yale five years ago that ruined the Bulldogs' I chances for an undisputed Ivy League championship.

And it was one of the Big Green's worst losses this dec- ade, when they have been a consistent contender. It's sickening." "I can't say I saw something like this coming," said Murphy outside his delirious locker room. "The thing we preached all week was, 'Let's get a total team effort, and if we do you'll be amazed what can The kids came to play. It's the first time we've had a complete effort on both sides of the ball." The game had numerous mood swings in a mere 46-second span of the third period, when 20 points were scored. Before the outburst, the Crimson held a 7-0 lead on Eion Hu's 1-yard run in the second quarter. The onlslaught started when Ferrara threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to backup tight end Matt Gargu-linski 4:09 into the third quarter for a 14-0 lead.

Brian White, whose father, Jo Jo, sometimes broke open games for the Celtics, returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards thanks to a block by Jamie Whitticom to tie Tom Fleming's 1973 record as the longest in Big Green history. "I got a great block," said White, "and that's the way we had it charted. It just worked." After Dave Regula missed the extra point, the Crimson had a 14-6 lead. Then came some weirdness. Ferrara threw a pass over the middle to flanker Mike Halligan that went off Halligan's hands, off White's hands, and into Golla's.

Golla ran all the way to the end zone for a 58-yard score. "We thought the play was dead," said Golla. "I was playing the '0' line a year ago and it's just every offenseman's dream. "I was just happy to be in that position to make that catch and go with it I thought it was an interception since it bounced out of Halligan's hands, but it popped into my hands at the Crimson 42. To tell you the truth I thought the whistle was blowing.

I didn't know what to do at first, but then I just started running and I went with it. I figured I'd better keep on going." Hu had his fourth 100-yard game of the season, rack-ing up 166 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries as the Crimson rolled up 524 yards (to Dartmouth's 347) in total offense. Ferrara, who completed 3 of 9 passes for 75 yards last year at Hanover as the Crimson saw a 17-point lead dissipate, led Harvard to a 28-6 lead at 11:18 of the third quarter. "We talked this week about the whole team coming together," said Ferrara. "It feels great to finally get the job done." Ivy roundup Cornell handed loss by Brown ASSOCIATED PRESS Paul Fichiera ran for 124 yards and a touchdown yesterday as Brown handed Cornell its first defeat of the season, a 16-3 loss at Ithaca, N.Y.
