It's where you want to be. a SECRET SANTA Continued from Page 1 this Christmas." But to the question of his identity, Santa only shrugged as he settled back in the Lincoln Continental. His driver, Steven Thompson of Hing-ham, the owner of ABC Limousine Service, said late yesterday that even he does not know his client's true identity, but added that the white beard may hide a famous face. Each day, Thompson is called by a contact and told to drive to a specified location, where Santa will meet him.

The two, he said, have never exchanged words, and when he received the cont-act, his secretary was told by Sana's helper, "If you saw his face, heard his name or heard him speak you could guess who he was." "That's why he is the silent Santa," Thompson said. Yesterday's tour marked the mystery St. Nick's sixth consecutive day of holiday giving a spree that has left, downtown residents and holiday shoppers with thoughts of $50 bills dancing in their heads. So far only this is known: He is relatively young and anything but rotund. He stands 6 feet tall or more, has brown, curly hair and is accompanied by a chief elf his limo driver.

Although some are persuaded he is concealing a famous voice, others think that ploy is part of a publicity stunt. Most don't really care: They just want some money. To each joyful recipient Santa hands a simple card and a crisp $50 bill, accompanied by a wink and a smile but never any spoken words. It was like that at 2:15 p.m., when firefighters from the Back.Bay station at Boylston and Hereford streets spotted a white limousine cruising past out front, and joked that it carried the most popular eral of its shoppers and workers -with his presence. Stopping in front of the Toys Us, Santa hopped out with more $50 bills, a witness said.

"This Santa guy pulled up in the limo and started handing out money again," said Dave Anderson, a North End resident. "I didn't get any. I was deprived. Then he ran inside and handed them out to cashiers. The whole thing took two minutes." Also stopping at a downtown bakery, Santa handed out a total of about $1,500 yesterday, according to Thompson.

He said his employer had been giving away $3,000 to $5,000 a day last week. Thompson said he will be going out several more times. He appeared Friday at City Hall and tried to hand $200 to Mayor Menino, who said he could not take the money. Taking Menino's advice, Santa went to a homeless shelter with the money. In the past week, he has been seen throughout the Back Bay, downtown and parts of the South End.

Who this Claus is, though, remains the question of the hour. He is as private as, though more generous than, Howard Hughes. Indeed, Thompson led one reporter on a wild chase through the back roads of North Weymouth, en route to picking Santa up. "You're not going to catch us," he said in the parking lot of a Dunkin' Donuts. "I am still semi in the dark," Thompson said later.

"It looks like he is doing this for the good of people. I'm just glad he picked me." But Santa himself, in the written interview, gave this warning: "If everyone follows me I can't do this the way I want." That's when he pulled up out front, his driver stepping from the limo. "We were just standing around and talking about it wondering who he is," said Ed Doherty, one of the firefighters. "All of a sudden the silver limo pulled up and firefighter John Bing said, 'Here he "He had a handful of 50s and Christmas cards and handed them out to us," Doherty said. "Then he took off down Boylston Street. We were flabbergasted." Said firefighter Sheldon (Buddy) Jackson: "It was unbelievable the way it happened.

A chauffeur opened the door and there he was. He didn't speak at all. I don't know if he can even talk." After handing four $50 bills to four firefighters, Santa was left with an extra bill in his hand. He gestured with his hands, asking if there was anyone upstairs, and yet another firefighter was summoned. All the recipients decided to donate their money to a fund for injured firefighters in Newton.
