AP PHOTO Harvard's Kweli Thompson slips the grasp of HC's Sam Leo. i mmm 12 yesterday. Sometimes they stomped their feet, other times they clapped. But for the most part, the Holy Cross crowd sat in blustery, chilly temperatures and waited for their football team to make some spirit-warming plays. Yet the Crusaders have found such plays difficult to come by this season.

Instead, they've garnered enough miscues to silence the most boisterous home audience. The trend continued yesterday as Harvard posted a 27-17 victory, keeping the Crusaders winless after four games. 1 A Fitton Field crowd of 8,611 fought off the elements and watched Harvard collect 359 yards rushing as the Crusaders were mired in botched plays, missed tackles and turnovers. Harvard (2-1) posted its first non-Ivy League road win since defeating Holy Cross in 1985, For the Crusaders, it marked the first time they have started the season 0-4 since 1977. The Crimson exploited a defense that came in giving up 350.7 rushing yards per contest.

Harvard primarily used two running backs to eclipse the average -junior Kweli Thompson and sophomore Eion Hu. Thompson rushed 25 times for 171 yards (150 in the first half). He scored one touchdown, a 25-yard run with 8:10 left in the first quarter to give the Crimson a 7-3 lead. Hu rushed for 154 yards on 35 carries and added two touchdowns. The first came a 1-yard ran with 10:42 left in the second quarter to put Harvard up, 17-3.

The second came on a 5-yard run with 7:17 remaining in the game to increase Harvard's lead to 27-10. The longest run from scrimmage by Harvard was 28 yards (by Thompson). Instead the Crimson methodically marched up the field, usually gaining 8-10 yards at a time. "I think that in their defense they read a lot," said Thompson. "I told Eion midway through the game to just run hard.

They were reading so much they were going to miss plenty of tackles." Plenty is an understatement. At times, two Holy Cross defenders would corral a runner, only to allow him to slip through their grasp. "They mostly arm-tackled us," said Hu. "They were playing really soft, so we just went head up on them." That made for a most frustrating day for Holy Cross coach Peter' Vaas. "It's obvious they had some success just lining up running the football right at us," he said.

They just said, 'Hey, here we come. Stop We didn't stop them. There were times when we did, we looked very, very good. There1 were times we just didn't make plays." Holy Cross did manage to generate some excitement on the first drive of the game. The Crusaders were lined up to punt when Anthony Pignio hauled in a bad snap that bounced in front of him, then ran left 49 yards for the first down.

Three plays later, Pignio booted a 29-yard field goal, putting Holy Cross up, 3-0, with 11:42 remaining in the first quarter. Holy Cross' efforts the rest of the half, however, were futile. In the second quarter, Vaas inserted backup quarterback Rob Callahan for starter Andy Fitzpatrick (3 of 5, 20 yards). Fitzpatrick completed 20 of 33 passes for 247 yards and had one touchdown, a 1-yard run with 1:56 remaining in the game. He also had two interceptions.
