The Crimson answered with an eight-play, 60-yard drive capped by a 17-yard left sweep by sophomore Hu. Patrick Harmon booted the point after. Colgate was three and out after the ensuing kickoff and Harvard's well-balanced attack reeled a 10-play, 67-yard drive that ended when Ferrara hit Mike Halligan with a 22-yard scoring pass in the left corner of the end zone at 14:49. The point-after try was blocked. The lengthy drive stayed in vogue as Colgate, behind senior quarterback Bill McDuffee, went 72 yards in 11 plays and scored when Jon O'Flynn, an Ipswich native, gathered in a 2-yard scoring pass in the right corner of the end zone at 5:09.

Franco's PAT made it 14-13, Colgate. Late in the second quarter the teams traded turnovers as Colgate fumbled (recovered by Kevin Dwan of Lynnfield) and Red Raider Rob Howard of Thayer Academy and South Easton intercepted Ferrara. After a pair of punts kicked off the third quarter, Colgate stunned the crowd when fullback Anthony Caravetta took a swing pass from McDuffee and scooted 36 yards down the right sideline. Franco's kick made it 21-13 at 10:07. But Harvard came back again, this time with a 10-play, 56-yard drive that end when Hu scored up the middle from the 3.

Kezirian rushed for the 2-point conversion and a 21-21 tie. Kezirian then put together a 13-play, 74-yard drive that ended at 7:21 when he scored on a 6-yard keeper. Hannon's kick made it 28-21, and a sigh of relief came from the stands. Kezirian then capped an 80-yard drive at 12:20 with his burst from the 4. Qay2j way yesterday as it came from behind with three fourth-quarter scores to defeat scrappy Colgate, 35-27, at Harvard Stadium.

Harvard was paced, as expected, by the running of Eion Hu (121 yards) and the unexpected passing and running of backup quarterback Steve Kezirian, who came in when Vin Ferrara injured his nonthrowing shoulder in the third quarter. Kezirian, a junior from Los Angeles, carried 7 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns and hit on 5 of 7 passes fo 45 yards. He also scored a key 2-point conversion that tied the game, the go-ahead touchdown on a 6-yard keeper and an insurance TD on a' nifty 4-yard run. Steve Kezirian is no longer a stranger. "I was pleased with the way we handled adversity after Vin went out," said Harvard coach Tim Murphy.

"Steve came off the bench and just did a great job. As far as Vin goes, we may have him carry the ball less. "We won and that's what's important'' Said Kezirian, "I'm just glad I was able to help. We're well coached and when I did go in I knew my assignments. It was nice to play and GLOBE STAFF PHOTO JOHN TLUMACKI Harvard quarterback Vin Ferrara scrambles for a few yards before leaving in the third quarter with a shoulder Injury.

The victory was an extra treat for Harvard offensive coordinator Mike Foley of Newburyport, who graduated from Colgate in 1978 and was assistant coach there from 1981-87 and head coach from 1988-92. The first quarter was highlighted by three lenghty drives as the Crimson took a 13-7 lead. Colgate took the opening kickoff and put together a 12-play, 82-yard drive that was climaxed by freshman D.J. Hough, who scored off left tackle from the 1 at 5:27. Steve Franco kicked the win.

difScult to keep Brown junior running back Paul Fi-chiera out of the starting lineup in the weeks ahead. Fichiera, filling in for leading rusher Marquis Jessie (out 3-4 weeks following hernia surgery), ground out a career-high 199 yards yesterday to lead Brown to a closer-than-expected 20-18 win over Holy Cross. The win boosted Brown to 3-2 while Holy Cross dropped to 0-6, its worst start since going 0-9 in 1977. While Fichiera handled things on the ground, sophomore quarterback Jason McCullough threw for 176 yards and three touchdowns. Flanker Charlie Buckley was on the receiving end of two of the scores and Tom Hornsby grabbed the other.

Fichiera carried the ball 31 times and picked up a Brown running game that was expected to sputter with the loss of Jessie. When senior fullback Kevin Sharkey went down with a left ankle sprain on the first series, Fichiera's role became even more important. "This game wasn't supposed to be this close," said Brown coach Mark Whipple, "but a win is a win is a win and that's all that matters. We didn't play with much intensity. I think when we got up, 13-0, the team thought the rout was on." Holy Cross did not look like a team giving up 42.8 points and 499.9 yards per game.

It trailed just 13-11 with five minutes to go. "They made the plays, we didn't; it's as simple as that," said disappointed coach Peter Vaas. "It's a game of plays, we didn't make them when we had to and, boom, there goes another game. The Crimson improved to 3-2 and is 1-1 in league play with road games coming up against Princeton and Dartmouth. The three victories match the win totals of the 1992 and 1993 squads.

"When Brown needed a key yard, it got it. When we needed a key inch, we didn't. When Brown needed to catch a pass, it did. We didn't. And, until we make those key plays Vaas was referring to his team's first three possessions, when the Cross drove to the Brown 26, 29 and 32, but in each instance turned the ball over on downs.

Later, Holy Cross moved to the Brown 9, but couldn't convert on fourth and 1. Brown moved out front, 6-0, 11 minutes into the second quarter when McCullough (13 for 28, 176 yards) drilled a strike to Buckley cutting across the middle of the end zone. The pair hooked up again three minutes into the second quarter to boost Brown to a 13-0 lead. Holy Cross capped an eight-play, 42-yard drive to trim the margin to 13-3 when Anthony Pignio hit a 28-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. After a scoreless third period, Holy Cross drove 71 yards in nine plays to make things interesting.

Some key passing by Rob Callahan (18 of 31, 229 yards) drove the ball to the 1, and J.R. Walz bulled in over left tackle. Walz rushed for the conversion to make it 13-11. But Brown answered with an 82-yard, time-consuming drive. The key play was a 59-yard run by Fichiera, which brought the ball to the 5.

From there, McCullough threw his third TD strike, this one to Hornsby. That made it 20-11 with 52 seconds left and all but wrapped it up. But Holy Cross drove 65 yards in 47 seconds and scored when Callahan hit John Myers from the 11. Pignio booted the PAT to pull Holy Cross within 20-18. Pignio tried an onside kick, but Brown's Steven Smith recovered at the 40 as time ran out.

Late heroics boost Dartmouth over Yale ASSOCIATED PRESS a 54-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Kevin Mayer to split end Dan Iwan with 5:04 left. Stalzer's conversion made it 13-6. The Dartmouth offense was hobbled by 14 penalties, which cost the Green one TD and stalled several drives. However, Singleton, given a chance when starter Ren Riley broke his wrist a week ago, drove the Big Green 75 yards in six plays for the winning TD. On the conversion, Oberle took a pitchout and started to circle right, then cut sharply to his left and went into the end zone untouched.

Penn 12, Columbia 3 Andy Glockner hit four field goals as a struggling Penn offense wore down stubborn Columbia at Philadelphia Glockner's kicks of 32, 28, 21 and 37 yards tied a school record as the Quakers (4-0, 2-0) continued Division 1-AA football's longest winning streak at 15. But Penn tied it later in the period as Terrance Stokes' 45-yard run set up Glockner's first field goaL Stokes led Penn with 192 yards rushing on 37 carries. Quarterback Mark DeRosa completed 22 of 34 passes for 263 yards, but was intercepted twice deep in Columbia territory.
