Police said Cummings had recently met the woman in a bar, but they did not know each other well.

He allegedly told her he was a police officer and asked to see her driver's license, obtaining her name and address. On Sunday, police said, Cummings showed up uninvited at the condominium the woman shares with a roommate, who was out of town. Police said he threatened but did not harm the woman, who they would not identify. Police went to the residence Tuesday after friends came to the station and expressed concern. When they arrived, Cummings fled, telling them he "wouldn't be taken alive." Early yesterday morning, police were called by a trucker who said he had picked up a hitchhiker fitting Cummings' description and dropped him off in Middleborough.

"He managed to get a ride from the truck driver, then he tried to arrange transportation to get out" of Middleborough, Raynham Sgt. Paul Jordan said. "But he was unsuccessful so he went into the woods. I II II II I- -ft; tn (lists f-SWiW tMMUHIUUf 1 il Tit 1 i i 1 i I I -1 i i I I if That's when we got him." Cummings was treated at Morton Hospital in Taunton for minor wounds after a dog from the Raynham K-9 unit bit him. He was later arraigned in Dedham District Court on charges he is a fugitive from Arizona and held without bail in State Police custody, Jordan said.

Initial reports said Cummings was an escaped prisoner. But, according to Anita Triglia, public information officer at the Dedham House of Correction, Cummings was a pretrial detainee. Officials said 35,000 books and other equipment valued at more than $1 million were destroyed when a water main break sent six feet of water cascading through the Gerena Community School on Sept. 14. "The library spent more than a decade putting that collection together," said Joseph Carvalho, interim president of the Springfield Library and Museums Association, who said its collection of Spanish- language books had been one of the most extensive in New England. Carvalho said while the damage was the worst the library had suffered since it moved to the basement of the school in 1975, it had also been flooded in the early 1980s and again in 1989.
