The Scientific American gives to the statement ot a German journal that cases of tetanus, or lock jaw, have been sue cessfully treated by merely applying to the nape of the neck and along the spine large pieces of flinnel dipped in hot water of a temperature just bearable to the hand (50 C). This remedy is certaiDly a very simple oae, accessible to all, and should it be a successful one would prove a veritable boon to suffering humanity. LONGINGS. If I were a railroad brak email I'd holler the stations so plain Tnat tun man who was going to Texas Would go der through to Maine. I'd open the door of the smoking car And I'd give such a mighty roar Tnat the passengers back In the sleeper Would all fall out on the floor for I couldn't afford a tenor voice, And I couldn't afford to speak In the sweet, soft tones of the ulColian harps For eleven dollars a week.

If I were a baggage master I'd rattle the trunks about; I'd stand them up in the corner And I'd tear their bawels out. I would pull the handles out by the roots, I would kick their corners In, Aid strew their stuffing all round the car And make them lank and thin. For I couldn't afford to wear kid gloves Nor put soft pads on my feet, Nor to handle things gently, when all my pay Just kept me In bread and meat. If I were a railroad conductor, As through the train I'd go, I'd have for every question they asked This answer all ready "Don't know." I'd connections for lots of men, I'd run lone passengers past I'd tea them Hwa? eight, when I knew 'twas ten And I'd swear their watches were fast. For I couldn't afford to be civil When I knew every man in the load Would look at my watch and ring, and say He stole them things from the road Burlington Hawkeye.

The Sad Bufferings of an Orphan, and the Horrible Effects of His Cruel Treatment. The following is taken from the Juniata Herald. It is hard to believe that in this age anybody could be guilty of such cruelty as la herein related "One of the most shocking evidences of maltreatment ever noted in the experience of hospital surgeons is at present being attended to at the Pennsylvania hospital in Philadelphia. The patient is a boy named Jeremiah Drexel, and his story is a recital of horrible barbaric treatment. When seven years old he was bound to a Pennsylvania farmer, named Dnnklebarger, who worked a property at Blue Bell, three miles from Landisburg, Perry county, this State, where the boy's indigent relations resided.

The farmer agreed to Erovide for the boy until he reached is majority. When he arrived at his a. a. new nome ne was put to man a wots, and everything that the farmer did the boy was expected to do, except Slowing. One evening Dunkelbargcr or eredhim to go into the loft and pitch down some hay for the cattle.

The boy did as directed, but not knowing any better did not pitch down enough. This, he states, caused the farmer to take up a pitchfork, with the handle of which he beat him over the legs and seat and back and Btiuck him heavily on the head. This was only a specimen of the constant treatment he re 'ceived at the farmer's hands. In a little while his knees became inflamed and swollen, and the little fellow could not straighten out his legs. Dunkelbarger made him work on until the last, but after a three years' struggle the poor boy could support it no longer, and at last he was un able to stand.

When affairs assumed this shape the family put the boy into a wagon and took him to his grandfather's house at Landisburg, saving, as he delivered over the frail wreck, "This boy is of no more use to me." For six months the grandfather nursed him, after which admission was secured for him at the Orphan's Home at Loysville. But his case was apparently hopeless and lately he was taken to the Pennsylvania hospital. His legs have been twisted out of shape; all above the knee has been shriveled to the bare bone, while the knee has increased to three times its proper size, and below that joint each leg is swollen to the size of a leg measuring two feet around. Nothing can be done to save the little sufferer's life except to amputate both legs." Sr. BTVITBIN'S DAT.

The Weather for the Next Forty Days. To day is St. Swithin's Day, and according to an old superstition the weather for fony day 8 depends upon the kind we have to day, Yennor to the contrary notwithstanding. An old couplet says: "3t. Swithin's Day if thou be fair For forty aays 'twill rain no malr." Tke popular weather superstition connected with the day is evidently derived from the legend that when St.

within died in 862. he desired, be fore shaking off this mortal coil, to be buried in the churchyard of the Minster at Winchester that the "sweet rain of heaven might fall upon his grave." At Canonization the monks tnougnt to nonor the saint by removing his body into the choir, and fixed the 15th of July for the ceremony but it rained day after day for forty days, so that the monks saw the saints were averse to their project and wisely abandoned it. An almanac published in 1697 thus mentions Saint within: 'In uly comes Saint Swithin's Day On which, If that It rain, they say Full forty days after It will Or more or less some rain distil. This swithln was a saint I trow, And Winchester'3 bishop also." There is doubtless a general truth at the bottom of the superstition, for the weather wise say the character of the summer frequently is determined by that of the spring, and a change is apt to take place about the middle of July, and whether it be wet or dry the prevailing period generally has a long lease. Last year, however, we had rain on St.

Swithin's day, but the succeeding reason was not usually rainy. WATER HOUSE. Contemplated Repairs to Machinery and Building at the Water House Length of Service of the Engines. For some time the sub committee of the Committee on Finance, Water and Gas has been in consultation with the engineer ot the water house on the subject ot certain necessary improvements and repairs to machinery, in that department. The subcommittee has charge of this department, but in this instance whatever is contemplated they propose to lay before the general committee before acting on it finally.

The engines and boilers ia the water house were erected in 1874. In view of this long service it is regarded now as an act of economy to make certain repairs and improvements It is proposed to put new plungers in the pump and new packing rings in tho high pressure cylinder, and probably a new style of valves will be adopted or the pumps. These repairs and improvements will, it is thought, be a direct raving of fuel, rime and labor, and thereby add to the effective force of the pumps. It is also contemplated to make a certain amount of necessary repairs to the building, such as tin roofing, spouting, repainting stone work, in the rear part of the building. Personal.
