The pencils, pens, found in the reservoir grounds a day or two since by Major Krause, have been identified a 9 belonging to scholars attending the schools of Mrs. Miller and Miss Vaughn, on Walnut street, between Second and Front. The thieves gained access through a broken window. From the information in possession of the officers itis thought that the "Sixteen Bleeders" had a hand in this affair.

We also learn that some time since the rooms in the Broad street school house were visited, desks broken open and a number of articles stolen. At a meeting of the trustees and man agers of the Home for the Friendless, held on the 6th the treasurer was instructed to publish a statement of the expenditures upon the grounds and building to this time. Kay from March 25th to April 10th. The crowding of so much into such a short period often times creates trouble not only in the changing of residences, but also in money matters. If there is a scarcity of money, loss may be tne consequence to many, Whereas, if the time of payment was before the day mentioned, or a little later, accommodations could more likely be had, because the time would give opportunity for funds to move from one operation to another and in this the same amount on the market would be sufficient to meet the general demand. The subject is one worthy of considera tion. Honor to the Little Girls.

Last week a number of little girls whose ages range from nine to twelve years, organized theselves into a society, and solicited contributions from some of our citizens of articles with which to hold a fair. They were liberally patronized and held the fair in Market equare, and the result of their efforts, realized over thirty dollars. They propose to furnish a room in the Home of the Friendless, with the money. The names of the little ladies interested in the affair are as follows Dora Klein, Lillie Bergner, Fanrie Ward, Grace Muench, Nora Myers, Minnie Ward, Annie Eppley. Their example Is one which might profitably be imitated by many other.

Surrender Day. This (Tuesday) being the 9th of April, is the anniver sary of Lee's surrender of the Army of om or tnern lrginia. nave not neard of any arrangement for a public demonstration in honor of the event. This will be the seventh anniversary of the virtual end of the rebellion. On the night of April 2d, 1865, the evacuation of Richmond and Petersburg took place, and Lee with his dispirited army retired toward Danville, to fortify for a last grand rally.

At High Bridge, over the Appomattox, Lee's forces crossed to the north side of the river. Two regiments sent by General Grant to hold the bridge were captured. The confederates then retreated toward Lynchburg, closely pursued. On the fifth day after (the 7th) General Grant sent a letter to General Lee, demanding a surrender of his army. On the 8th Lee's forces made a strenuous effort to extricate themselves, but at night they encountered General Sheridan at Appomattox Court House, between them and Lynchburg.

A contest ensued, but with no definite results. On the morning of the 9th Sheridan resumed the attacK; about 9 o'clock a flag of truce appeared in front of his line with the information that hostilities had been suspended in order to arrange terms of peace. Gen. Lee's note requesting an interview was received and answered by General Grant at 11:50 a. and the terms of capitulation were signed at 3:30 p.

On Wednesday, the 8th, there will be a grand parade of all the Tribes in the eastern section of the State a very large delegation being promised from Philadelphia. The affair is expected to be unusually fine, as all who appear in the line will wear the handsome regalia of the Ordfir. nnd rnr. ry with them a large number of costly banners and flags. On Thursday evening the sixth grand banquet will be given in Fulton hall in honor of the visit of the Grand Council.

One of them says among other things In the first place, I wish to state that I am an engraver, and said to be, by those who are competent of judging, the most expert one in America. I have been employed by the. U. S. Government for ten years.

I superintended the engraving of all the plates for the LJnitea States money, wnen tne uov ernment ceased to issue greenbacks my services were no longer required, and as soon as 1 louna that my time was my own I conceived the idea of engraving a few plates ior myseii and lor my bene nt, as am well aware that a man can never become wealthy working for a salary. I have only recently finished the woi that i began almost two years since, that is, the engraving of six plates wmcn are exact duplicates of the Governments. Mine are the fifty cents.the one, two.five, ten and twenty dollar plates. I have taken the greatest care in engraving these plates, and I defy the best experts to detect the counterfeits from the genuine. I deposited a few days since, a large amount of my money in six different banks in New York they all accepted it without saying a word my money being all new I thought it would not be advisable to deposit any more for fear they might think something wrong.

When it is deposited in banks there should be other money that has been in use mixed with it, then there will be no suspicion, and I now need only a few true men to assist me lor six months, then we will secure a fortune that will enable us to enjoy all the pleasures that money can procure on earth. My bills are printed on exactly the same paper as the United States money, so that there is not a posible chance to detect the difference only in one way, which is this the Government bills are num bered from up, so are mine. If you should come across two of the same number, one will certainly be counterfeit and the other genuine. If it is convenient for you to come to New York, wish you would then you could see the money, and I would give you a few dollars to pass, then you would see that everybody would take it exactly the same as if it was genuine. They conclude as follows, for a blind Address Miss Flora Wood, care of 16 South 5th avenue, New York; and, my name is Wm.

Frost, but as a blind be sure to back your letter as follows: Miss Ada Frost, care 16 South 5th avenue, New York. We would advise our readers to let them severely alone. OUR MlLLERSBURO CORRESPONDENT writes Our lumbermen are very busily engaged just now, during the present rise in the river, getting in rafts of timber. The mill of H. Miller which has been stopped for some time for the want of timber, will in a few days present its usual busy appearance.

The rolling mill project which has been the absorbing topic of conversation for some time past, and for which subscription papers were placed into the hands of active gentlemen to solicit subscriptions, and about $25,000 subscribed for that purpose, notwithstanding all the apparent efforts put forth we firmly believe, from the present state of affairs, that the proposed enterprise will prove a failure. Mr. Wilson Turner, who was employed in Brubaker Marks' hardware store for the past year as clerk, we are glad to announce, is at present employed as clerk in Mr. George Bergner's book store in Harrisburg. While in Millers burg, by strict attention to his business, his manly demeanor, and the courteous disposition manifested toward all who came in contact with him while in the discharge of his duties, he won numerous friends.

Wilson is a young man, possessing a good moral character, full of life and activity. Such a young man cannot help but succeed. He has the best wishes of the citizens for his future welfare. We have been informed that the pro posed parade of the Knights of Pythias, to have taken place May 30th, in this place, has for some reason been postponed. Quite a number of new buildings will be erected this summer, some have already been commenced.

How about the new school house Mr. Nathaniel Cramer cut his foot with an axe a few days ago. He is unable to be out. There will be a camp meeting commenced August 13, 1872, on the "old camp ground" under the auspices of the M. E.

church. The woods is very pleasantly located for this purpose, about three fourths of a mile east of the Northern Central railroad depot, with an abundant supply of good water. An encampment of Odd Fellows will be instituted at on early day in this place. So says rumor. Dr.

JohnL. Ritter, of Liverpool, Perry county, was arrested a few days ago by a United States offieer and placed under $5,000 bail for his appearance at court for an alleged violation of the pen sion laws. Mr. J. D.Etzweiler.arrested some time ago on suspicion of dealing in "queer," and who gave bail for his appearance.

has gone to Pittsburg, for trial before the United States district court, sitting at that place. A young woman, who was maid for Mrs Isaac Miller, residing at Mt. Patrick, Perry county, was taken to Pittsburg by a united States omcer on last Friday, to give evidence in the case for the nited (states, we nope to be able to announce his acquittal. A few respectable men assembled at the Washington House in this place. on the evening of thefirst, to pay their last tribute of respect to the retiring landlord also, to partially enjoy the benefit of a tree blow, which is gener ally customary on such occasions (as a young man was heard remark); whether the expectations or some were gratined in that direction, I am unable to say.

This much I do know, that the greater part of the night was spent in drinking, dancing, cursing and swearing, and such conduct as is a disgrace to any civilized community, and such as should make the participant blush with shame if he has any respect for himself, family or friends. It was also very annoying to the respectable people living in close proximity. God forbid that Millersburg shall ever be disgraced again by a repetition of the programme of the evening of the firat of April, 1872, at the Wash House. apo iw Editorial Notices are so common that it is almost impossible for an editor to express bis honest opinion of the merits of any article without being suspected of interested motives. This fact, not deter us from saying what we think of a new addition to the Materia Medica to which our attention has been recently directed. We refer to Dr. J. Walker's California Vinegar Bitters, a remedy which is making its way into more families just now than all the other advertised medicines put together.

There seems to be no Question about the potency of its tonic and alterative properties, while it possesses the great negative recommendation of containing neither alcohol nor mineral poison. That it is a specific for indigestion, biliousness, constipation, and many complaints of nervous we have reason to know; and we are assured on good authority that as a general invigorant, regulating and purifying medicine, it has no equal. It is stated that its ingredients (obtained from the wilds of California) are new to the medical world and its extraor dinary effects certainly warrant the conclusion that it is a compound of agents hitherto unknown. If popularity ia any criterion, there can be no doubt of the efficiency of the Vinegar Bitters, lor tne sale of the article is immense and continually increasing. api Johnson's Anodyne Liniment, is without doubt, the safest, surest and best remedy that has ever been invented for internal and external use.

It is ap plicable to a great variety of complaints, and is equally beneficial for man or beast. We have seen it stated in various pe pers throughout the country, that agents for the sale of Sheridan's Cavalry Con dition iowders were authorized to refund the money to any person who should use them and not be satisfied with the result. We doubted this at first, but the proprietors authorize us to say that it is true. apr6 Skin Diseases. Perry's Improved Gomedone and pimple remedy.
