T. Beatty, Chairman. MALI THE DEMOCRACY TRIUMPH! The Question to bo Decided To night Republicans, Do Your Whole Duly. To night the question which heads this article will be decided in the organ ization or tne new Board of Control, and Republican voters will ascertain whether their wishes and expressed de sires are to De aisregarded, or whetner their representatives in that body will carry out the principles of the party to which they owe their election. The Republican party expects every Republican member of the Board to do hia duty to night, and vote for the nom inees of the party for officers for the ensuing year.

We last evening sounded the warning note and exposed the plot to rob the Re publican partv of its hard won victories, We hope the warning will be heeded, and those who have been listening to the silvery tongued leaders of the Democracy will take a firm stand and refuse all offers to compromise their honor and betray the party which has honored them. The vote for officers will be care fully scrutinized by the public, and those who go over to the enemy will be held up to the scorn and derision of a betrayed but undismayed constituency. No sale or bargain for office at the sacrifice of party will be received with any degree of favor. A word to the wise should be sufficient. A strawberry and floral festival will commence on Thursday evening next at the First Free Baptist church, corner of State and Fourth street, for the benefit of the Sunday school.

It should and will no doubt be liberally patronized. Personal. We were pleased to no tice on our streets this morning J. 14. Eby, who has just returned from an extended trip throughout the west.

He is looking as if the air of the country through which he passed and the trip had added considerably to his health Mr. Eby will beat his post in the Board of Control this evening and do his duty. The Opera. Notwithstanding the excessive heat, a large and fashionable audience assembled in Brant's hall last evening to listen to the rendering of Flo tow's opera of Martha, by Mrs. C.

R. Bernard and her talented company. As jiartna" sue sang witn ner usual sweetness, and acted with great correctness. Mrs. Zelda Seguin, as was in excellent voice, and rendered the character perfectly.

The characters of Lionel, Plunket. Tristane. and the Sheriff were well sustained by Messrs. Ca9tle, Campbell, Seguin and Peakes. The chorus was well chosen, and the orchestral music was very fine.

Mrs. Bernard's rendering: of "The Last Rose of Summer" was excellent. 1 Final Meeting of the Old Board of Control. An adiourned stated meeting of the Board of Control was held in its room last eveninir. Present Messrs.

The letter we published in our issue of May 29, in relation to this young city, has created a good deal of interest, our ieiiow citi zen, J. R.

Eby, has use returned from that place, and although he had seen the various articles which have been industriously published against Uulutn, lie has, after a thorough exam ination of everything connected with it, formed the hierhest opinion of its future: and as the best proof of his confidence has invested considerably in it. Personal jealousies as well as the jealousy of rival places, like Chicago and Milwaukee, are at the bottom of all the de traction of Duluth. The huge joke in one of our contemporaries lately of the fightof Jav Cooke and Providence about Duluth, appears to have been all the other way Providence turning in 10 help, as in the old fable, "those who help themselves." Mr. Eby gives us the strongest assurances not only of his confidence in Duluth, but of the Lake Superior and ississip pi railroad (running from Dnluth to St. Paul), and of the complete security of its bonds, which are held to some extent here and also of the success of tne JNorth racihcrauroaa, now Dunaing rapidly westward.

In regard to the latter we have reliable information that the recent negotiations of Jay Cooke by members of their firm now in Jfurope, Huerh M'Culloch and H. C. Fahnestock, with German and English banners, have entire success, secur ing both the money to build the road. and the immigration to settle the vast territory of the company, who hold the largest landed estate in the world. Indeed the grave question now with the directors of the North Pacific is.

how far to let the Europeans in so as to give our own people a large show of tne advantages 01 the investment. Communicated. Prof. Alfred Armstrong, of our city, having received an appointment in the Postottico Department at Washington, D. and expecting to leave the city in the early part of the week, for the last time perhaps, our Sabbath school (Second Presbyterian) in his official capacity last Sabbath one week ago, and bade us good bye.

We were not aware of his going until the afternoon of that Sabbath, as it was announced to us in school. We could not but be grieved to part with so dear a friend, for we were resting in a fancied security that he would be with us permanently, having entered a public school as principal. While we joy in his good fortune and congratulate him, I assure him we are deeply sorry for our own loss and sympathy for ourselves impresses us the more. To say we respected, admired or honored him would be inadequate of expressing our feeling toward him we loved. About five years ago, before the death of that eminent Christian gentleman, Mr.

M. M'Kinney, he came to our s'chcol in company with our friend, Mr. Fleming, as a teacher, and becoming attached to the school, he was elected superintendent by acclamation after Mr. M'Kinney 's death. His success as a teacher and superintendent was highly satisfactory to the school and its friends.

He was ever ready to counsel and encourage the worthy, entreat the wayward and implant the principle of self government. As a scholar we are not able to pay a proper compliment to his merits. Up to the time of his departure the uniformity of his instructions in the life and miracles of Christ gave the highest success and gratification to himself; for I dare say our school will stand second to none in an examination on those subjects. He was not wont to follow always in beaten paths his originality was truly striking. In appreciation of his kind services in our Sabbath school, scholars and teachers offered the following resolutions which were unanimously agreed to Whereas, In the providence of God yve are called upon to part with our tried, faithful and efficient Superintendent, ProfVAlfred Armstrong, to whose clear, wholesome instruction we have been, so frequently permitted to listen with too little appreciation of the privilege we enjoyed therefore, Hesolved, That it is with sincere regret, and a keen sense of the severe I03S we shall sustain, in his withdrawal from us, that we yield to the necessity, and bid him an affectionate, though reluctant adieu.

Resolved, That we hereby tender him our most hearty thanks for the interest he has so long taken in our Sabbath school, our church, and our people generally and most humbly and earnestly do we pray that God's blessing may accompany him wherever he may be, preserving him in health and usefulness, that he may prove a blessing to others, as he has been to us in the past. Resolved, That we shall ever cherish with the liveliest sense of gratitude the memory of our excellent Superintendent, and that our prayers shall ever follow him, that the blessing of Heaven may rest upon him, and he may prove a blessing to others among whom his lot may be cast, as he has been to us.
