A Bloody Traoedy A Boy of Sixteen Murders a Companion of teen. Money the Cause. The fcomeraet Herald savs: On last Wednesday even ine our town was thrown into a fever of excitement over me norrioie ixageuy that had been enacted about two miles below town.

A young boy by the name of Wm. Shaffer, but better known as Lord Wellington, shot the oldest son of one of our respectable citizens, James Marshall. who resides about a mile south of this place. On the morning of Wednesday, the boy known as Lord Wallineton came into the Btore of John F. Blymyer, and seeing some revolvers lviner on tho counter, he immediately inquired the different prices, when he wa told he needn't know, as he dil'nt want to purchase.

Not to be put off in this manner, he inquired, when he was told that they were worth a4 'Z He then threw down a five dollar bill, took the revolver and purchased teven ty flve cents worth of cartridges and left. Mr. Blymyer thinking that he had done wrong, in a few minutes started after the boy but could not find him. About six o'clock in the evening, the report came to town, that young Mar shall was lying dead, by a bridge near the residence or iLenry Metzier. in a few minutes from one to two hundred men and boys started for the spot, and found the report but too true.

The boy was lying on his back, pierced through his breast by a ball, having a five barrelled revolver by his side, with every barrel charged. A jury was at once impannelled, an inquest was held, the verdict being that young Mar shall had come to his death by a pistol shot from an unknown hand. The following facts were afterward learned, that Lord Wellington bad stolen the five dollars from a laborer on the railroad, with which he had pur chased the revolver, that he and young Marshall had been shooting mark the greater part of the day, and Shaffer confesses that he demanded of Marshall some money which he had in possession and that on refusing he had shot him. The next morning after the horrible affray Shaffer's pistol was found in a field near by, and Marshall's pocket book but a few yards further on. It is generally believed that he killed him 'or his money, and it is thought that his intention was to shoot Jim Acres, one of the bosses on the railroad, with whom be had had some little diffi mitrv Young Shaffer is a youth of about 16, ha been brought up without hav ine anv of those Christian influences brought to bear upon him which go so far to make the character of a youth.

About midnight a young woman named Sarah Beat, from Lock Haven, attempted to commit suicide by jumping the river below the railroad bridge. She was noticed by a gentleman who saw by her actions that something was wrong, and rescued from what would doubt have been her watery grave, and taken to the Mayor's office. It seems she had been employed at the United States hotel, at Lock Haven, as dining room girl, and became acquainted with a young man who was also re siding in that place but who was origi nally from Mecnanicsburg.

Cromwell's Art Entertain mbts.

The evening referred to in the folio ins letter, is the first that Whittier has spent in any public assembly for many years. What his delight was can be seen in nis own Deauutui prose 'I was not able to see thee after the exhibition, but I cannot help thanking thee tor tne real pleasure enjoyed in beholding the best works of arts, and the most interesting landscapes or the old world and the new. The stereoscopic effect was wonderfully preserved the largely magnified pictures. The statues, particularly, called forth my admiration. They were, solid and rounded forms of grace and beauty.

The interiors of Moorish and Gotbie Architecture really seemed to invite one's feet upon their tessellated floors and under their sombre arches, or be neath their graceful arabesque galleries and colonnades. Of the various views presented I can only refer to the ruins of Psestum, the Bock Temples of Egypt, the Ford of the Jordan, Melrose Abbey, the Alps and lihineland scenery, to say that they were most excellent. With great regard, thine very truly, John G. Whittier. Our citizens will be afforded, next week, an opportunity of attending these highly recommended entertainments at Brant's Hall.

Mrs. Jane Kirk departed this life at the iesi dence of her son in law, W. S. Prowell, of New Cumberland, on Tuesday night last. The deceased resided nearly all her days atLewisberry.York county, but a few years ago feeling the infirmities of age, she took up her abode with Mr Prowell.

She was a lady of great energy and decision of character, firmly adhering to what she believed to be rigbt regardless of opposing influences. In the village in which she so long resided, she was justly regarded as one of the pioneen and pillars of Methodism. Her house was always open for the reception of the weary itinerant, and he never left her hospitable roof without being strengthened and invigorated. To use the language of one who knew her long and well, "It is doubtful if there would be Methodist church in Lewisberry, but for her unwearied efforts."
