Tho School Boatd held a special mooting lest night, tor the purpose or hearing the report of the Finance Committee on the subject of delinquent tax collectors.

The report was principally made up of a review of the aocounts of Jacob Faunce, collector or school taxes in i70, 1877, 1878 and 1879, though incidentally it is stated therein that a number of other collectors show deficits in their accounts of small sums. In the case of Mr. Faunce it was shown that in 1876 1877 there Is a deficit of 8000, and in 1877 1878 another of $1,560. After the reading of the report an exciting debate followed, which at times verged on person alities of an acrimonious nature. The whole subject was left in its present condi tion, leaving tho bondsmen of Mr.

Faunco no other alternative but to go into court and nave it cleared up there. A Telegraph reporter endeavored to sco Air. Faunce this morning, but he could not be round. A friend speaking for Mr. Faunce Bays he holds a voucher for a set tlement ot taxes for $1,500, but it cannot be said whether it is for 1876 77 or 1878 79.

An expert was sent for, who in ten minutes, with a co'd chisel and hammer, sprung the lock and opened the safe. HUMS MISSIONS. Interesting Meeting In Market Square Presbyterian Vhurch Delegation of Indians Present from tbe Government School at Carlisle Songs, Instrumental Music and Speeches. The Home Missionary meeting in Market Square Presbyterian church, this afternoon, was one of the most interesting held for a long time, and was participated in by a number of pupils from the Indian school at Carlisle, under charge of Mrs.

Pratt. Rev. Chambers, of Pine Street church, led the meeting. Mrs. Pratt introduced two little girls, who sung a number of hymns, the rendering of which was pleasing in the extreme.

Mrs. Pratt then briefly stated the system by which the children are instructed at the Carlisle school, describing their diligence and patience, and aptness in study. As an evidence of this, Luther, the eon of the Sioux Chief Standing Bear, was introduced, who played the solo, "Nearer, my God, to Thee," on a cornet, in a manner which 'cited warm approval. Luther is a member of the Brass Band of the school, which has only been under training for three years. Joshua, a Kiowa boy, spoke next.

He read his speech, which he wrote himself. Standing Bear was then introduced and made a short speech in the Sioux language, his speech being interpreted by Luther, his son, and was mainly an expression of gratification at being present on the occasion and a declaration that he saw children had came a long distance to see his son and the other Indian children, but that he was glad to see the children of the pale faces as those of his own tribe. Mrs. Pratt made a few brief remarks at the close of the meeting, saying that what had been heard from the children of the Indian school was a fair specimen of their progress. There were two boys and three girls in the delegation with Standing Bear, all of whom were entertained at dinner by Mr.

Charles L. Bailey tc day. The Indian children accompanied, by Mr. Pratt, returned to Carlisle this afternoon. SENSATION IM MtBOAKEtTA STREET.

The scene speedily became one of great excite ment, crowding the street with women and children. Iu the meantime Mr. Strine hurried to Alderman Fager's office.

The Equine Paradox is an exhibition of educated horses, and their performance is as wonderful as the name under which the combination travels is puzzling. Trained horses are an ordinary sight, but horses that will obey the word of command and prove to all doubters that thev under btand what is said to them are extraordinary. The horses now exhibiting their in telligence at the Opera House go through various tricks and group themselves in tableaux with a precision that is remark able, and their entire performance was novel and entertaining. Private wire from Harrlsb'jrg to Now York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and Chicago, livery facility afforded inveat ors Harrisbubg, May 3 9 We have another dull day to report in the New York market, with transactions perhaps a little in excess of the average for the past week. The street has been devoid of rumors and news of any kind, and it is still purely a traders' market. We regret to recognize tne fact that pending developments are capable of affecting it sharply one way or the other.

During the past four months we have been unable see any element of an advance in stocks, but there 13 a possibility that the assurance ot a good crop may cause a revival in general business and a better traffic lor tbe trunk lines might be made the basis ol some bull speculation. On the other hand a general feeling of depression exists in all business circles and people are talking poor for the first time In four or five years. Taking all the possibilities of the future together we think the dullness can be fully accounted for, ss there is just enough uncertainty to keeo Intelligent operation out of the market Up to time of writing no specie is engaged for to morrow's steamers, and it is unlikely that any will go. Money at the banks loaned at 4 to 5 per cent on the Stock Exchange at 3 to 4 per cent. The Philadelphia market continued dull and lifeless at about last night' closing figures.

The liquidation in Pennsylvania made aorae further progress to day, the prices sagging from 58 to 57. The selling movement in Lehigh stopped it holds very steady for tha moment at 38. The Penn sylvania stocks are entirely neglected, also Bnffalo, which still rules at 16. The speculative paisenger railroad stocks were weak, Hestonviile selling at IS against 19 yesterday, and People's fell on the first call from 9 to 8 without Intermediate sales.
