She hopes the necessary repairs to the house can be completed by 1996, the 100th anniversary of the Historical Society's incorporation. In the meantime, the society is mining other means of fund-raising to raise the more than $45,000 that is still needed. Next fall, it is planning to lead a tour of Billerica's other landmark properties that it hopes will underscore the need to preserve these historical treasures.

"The real emergency is over, but we still need to finance some long-term solutions," MacNeill said. "But," she added, "we're hopeful." an awful lot of individuals, which is wonderful, but unfortunately most of the gifts have been small," MacNeill said. "Older residents typically are sending $5 or $10; the average gift is $25." There have been pledged gifts offering other types of support, as well. "A Burlington plasterer offered to repair all of the cracked and broken ceilinp when we are able to fully finance the repairs," MacNeill said. "We're very grateful for those kinds of gifts as well." So far, the society has been able to install another support beam in the cellar, which will at least temporarily keep the floor from buckling.

"It's not a long-term solution, least keep the house from getting any worse." The 10-room colonial, located at 36 Concord Road, was given to the society by Sexton, a former schoolteacher in the Concord school system who died in 1936. Parts of the much-modified house date to at least the early 1700s. Since the Historical Society appealed to town residents last December for contributions to repair the crumbling fieldstone foundation and repair existing interior damage caused by it, it has raised only $4,000. Most of those donations have come in small amounts or less, MacNeill said. "We have received money from marks, the Billerica Historical So-qiety nevertheless remains tic that it can save the antique yellow colonial known aa the Clara 0 or bexton House.

"We are very disappointed that haven't raised the full amount," said the society's president, Dorothea (Bunny) MacNeill. In 1983, a similar flurry of appointments to the second Dukakis administration (and "midnight" appointments by the outgoing King administration) led to the seven midterm retirements in the 1983-84 farm, resigned last spring to become the state's agriculture commissioner. "Why did I stay so long?" he asked rhetorically. "I guess I cling to the naive notion that public service is an honorable career and most of the guys and the women here are hardworking and good people." But, Healy said, "It gets harder and harder. I'd go home on weekends to keep the farm going, but a lot would have to take a second job and that might bring a conflict of interest.

It's amazing that people stay as long as they do." It was the opportunity to take the job in state government he had always wanted that finally prompted Healy to leave the House. Legislative salaries frozen at since 1983 the demands of year-round sessions and the ethics investigation of links between legislators and lobbyists are underlying reasons for the record number of de partures. "The salary doesn't balance out anymore," said Flaherty.

"There was a time when you were willing' to lose the money and give up time with your family because it was balanced out by being able to get a major piece of legislation through or do a few good things for people. But now the job is so intense and all encompassing." Flaherty's feelings were echoed by other legislators, including the longest-serving member among those who have already left or plan to leave.
