On the next play, Fiedler saw Shearer angling into the corner'of the end zone and delivered a second strike under pressure to create a 32-28 lead with 1:49 to go. While this implausible game was coming to a conclusion, Crimson quarterback Mike Giardi watched the bizarre happenings from the sidelines because of a mild concussion he incurred with 9:20 left in the UJLLIjlLmJ ed to fall late yesterday afternoon in Memorial Field, but Dartmouth quarterback Jay Fiedler still managed to light a roaring fire for the second straight week. The season was on the line here in the Upper Valley, and Fiedler worked his magic again in a 39-34 victory over Harvard that kept alive the Big Green's hopes for an Ivy title.

JO A A a third quarter. Harvard actually had a 28-11 lead in the game, played before 11,030 in overcast, chilly conditions.

But Fiedler, who may be the best quarterback the Ivies have seen in ages, threw three touchdown passes in a glittering second half that saw him complete 14 of 28 for 227 yards. Just a week earlier on the same turf, he brought the Big Green back from a 21-6 deficit by completing eight of his final nine passes to engineer a 28-27 victory over Cornell. The Crimson had badgered him and picked off three of his passes in the first half as they built a 20-11 lead. They made it 28-11 when backup quarterback Vin Ferra-ra tossed a hook-shot pitch to Mark Cote for a 9-yard touchdown play and Jon Pono-suk took it in for 2 on the conversion. Fiedler, who set a school record with 409 career completions, started the comeback late in the third when he escaped pressure and threaded a needle between defenders Clete Johnson and Nathan Ty-rell for a 34-yard touchdown pass to Shearer.

It seemed time was running out when Fiedler's fumble was recovered by nose guard Joseph Hiffa at the Big Green 48 early in the final quarter and Chris Andre intercepted a Fiedler pass with 8:34 left at the Crimson 12. Ferrara completed a 37-yard pass to Mark Begert to the 49, but two plays later Cote fumbled and Matt Feeley's recovery at the Big Green 38 started the amazing comeback. On the big fourth-down completion to Shearer, Fiedler said, "I knew they'd be coming with the house on that one. They'd come on the previous couple of plays as well. I'knew our receivers were in one-on-one coverage.

I dropped back and someone came in free. I sidestepped them and I saw Dave coming in over the middle. "I just put it on him. After I completed that, I knew we were going to score." They did. Dartmouth's Pete Oberle ran 24 yards for a 39-28 lead with 1:08 to go, and Ferrara threw 20 yards to Begert with 10 seconds left, but by that time the crowd was on its feet, singing the songs of the season.
