W-l-T Tommy Soderstrom 2512 3.42 20-17-6 Dominic Roussel 1769 3.76 13-11-5 THE CL Continued from Page 57 from Northlands Coliseum following one of Edmonton's five championships. Right there, at the Forum Inn, it basked in soft, smoke-filtered lights and survived a night of hooting, hollering and professional disrobing. More recently, the Cup has survived a surprise plunge to the bottom of Mario Lemieux's swimming pool in Mt. Lebanon, not to mention a quick disassembling and reassembling at the hands of Bryan Trottier and Phil Bourque. Clark Gillies, key member of the Islanders' four Cup teams (1980-83), even let his dog savor the history, the splendor, the grandeur.

Gillies filled the Cup with water, and an appreciative Hombre leaned in and lapped it up as if it were vintage Dom Perignon. "Why not?" shrugged a nonapo-logetic Gillies. "He's a good dog." Over the next two nights, 16 NHL teams, including the Bruins, will begin to play out what is now a century-old rite of spring, the playoff chase for the Stanley Cup, which may not be decided until June 15. What originally cost Lord Stanley 10 guineas $50 in 1893 money today has millionaire owners and millionaire players chasing it from the Back Bay to British Columbia. Next year the expansion Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, join in the goose chase.

First competed for in 1893, when it was the cherished prize of the top amateur teams in Canada, the Stanley Cup has been the symbol of professional hockey supremacy in North America since 1910 when it became the possession of the National Hockey Association. In 1926, at the age of 33, it was adopted as the symbol of the NHL's crowning achievement and has been under the league's exclusive control save for the odd night out since 1946. One of those side trips came in 1970, following a Bruins breakup dinner at a Route 1 restaurant north of Boston. Under the charge of Milt Schmidt, then the Bruins' general manager, the Cup rode in the back of Schmidt's car to his home in Needham. It was the first Cup here since Schmidt, Bobby Bauer and Woody Dumart played together on the famed Kraut Line in 1940-41, and it was Schmidt's responsibility to see that it made its way safely back to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

"Once I got it home, I wasn't sure what to do with it," recalled Schmidt, who continues to report to Causeway Street each day to help another former Bruin, Don Mar-cottc, manage the Garden Club. "Finally, I pulled out my daughter's old baby crib, set it in there and pulled a blanket over it, "Hey, I figured that was as safe a place as any, a nice place to put it down." Dejicnding on your point of view, the Stanley Cup can look like a beautiful wedding cake, its bands of inscribed names cascading the length (35V inches) of the column that sup their favorite team and looked upon opposing players as brutes." So have things really changed? Stories of Cup hijinks, such as Messier's, began surfacing in the '70s, when it was almost scandalous to think that Guy Lafleur would spirit it away from a Canadiens gathering at Toe Blake's Tavern for an afternoon visit to his home in Thurso, Quebec. Later in the day, when he caught his child filling it with a garden hose, The Flower figured it was time for the Cup to get back to Montreal (where the Montreal AAA club first won it in 1893). During the Stanley Cup finals, the league transports the Cup and many of its impressive awards between the cities hooked up in the best-of-seven series and invites the public for free viewing, usually at a downtown hotel. All the awards are kept under close watch by security guards, but the Cup itself, which is eventually presented on ice to the captain of the winning team, is but a replica of Lord Stanley's prize.

The original, turned brittle and susceptible to damage, was retired to the Hall of Fame in 1969. It is only the Cup's brother some might say its evil twin that gets reported now in some of its zany wanderings. Looking for an edge in the '87 Cup finals, Edmonton vs. Philadelphia, then Flyer coach Mike Keenan had the Cup brought into his club's dressing room before Game 5. The Flyers were down in the series, 3-1, and he was reaching down for inspiration.

"This," said Keenan, rallying his club, "is what you play for." When the Flyers won Game 5, 4-3, Keenan called in the Cup again for Game 6. The Flyers won again, 3-2, forcing Game 7. Again, back at Northlands Coliseum, Keenan asked NHL security to bring the Cup into the Flyer room before the game. Coincidence or not, Keenan's Cup caper was working. Only this time, mysteriously, it was missing.

"You know how it is," said the Oilers' assistant equipment manager, Lyle Kulchisky, an alleged coconspirator in the thievery. "The circus was just in and I think it left with the lions and tigers." The Game 7 final score: Edmonton 3, Philadelphia 1. And the Cup made a mysterious reappearance in time for postgame ceremonies. There are pictures that players carry of the Cup, if only in their heads. Ray Bourque is one of those.

The Bruins' captain has seen the Cup up close, having competed for it in the finals in '88 and '90, only to fall short. If the day comes that the Bruins win a Cup with Bourque, he'll have his picture. Until then, the idea of standing next to it, being photographed with it, elicits an empty shrug from the All-Star defenscman. "Why would I do that?" he said. "I don't want to be there, just hugging it and smiling.

I want it to be right. I want the picture all sweaty, bloody, hopefully after a four-game sweep of somebody. I want to touch it, hold it, grab it" And in his mind's picture, Bourque sees himself emaciated, worn from the good war of winning 16 games. "Deep checks," he said, pinching his face, imagining the look. I want it to be for mi." ST.

"But you'll never forget that feeling of holding it, I'll tell you that.

My first time was after the 1938-39 season. Frank Calder was the president of the league then, and when he went to present it, the crowd at the Garden wouldn't let him do it until Eddie Shore came back out on the ice. Shore was already in the dressing room don't ask me why, that was Eddie and he was half undressed when he finally came back out I mean, what an ovation similar to Bobby Orr's the night he retired. I was just a kid then, and the goose pimples were running up and down my neck." Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada, 1888-93, did not envision a game when he donated his Cup 100 years ago. In fact, Frederick Arthur was living in England when the trophy was first contested for in what was then called the Dominion Challenge Cup.

Hockey players weren't paid until the early 1900s, and the Stanley Cup didn't make its way into the professional ranks until the Allan Cup donated by Sir Montagu Allan of Montreal became amateur hockey's official prize. And early Stanley Cup games differed greatly in look and in style from today's game. To wit: Rinks were poorly lit, without heat, and warm weather often meant a game's postponement. Teams played seven men a side a rover working between the forward line and defensemcn. Rather than nets, players attempted to shoot the puck between two poles mounted on a movable base.

Boards didn't surround the ice. Instead, fans stood atop a platfonn that went around the rink. A player pushed into the crowd was often booted back into play by the paying customers.
