THE BOSTON GLOBE FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 1994 63 NAC ranks expand "Hofstra ('94) andTowson State ('95) wDl join ! - By Bob Monahan GLOBE STAFF Hofstra and Towson State have accepted invitations to join the North Atlantic Conference, commissioner Stu Haskell announced yesterday. - '- Hofstra's entry will take effect this fall. Towson State, which has a commitment to the Big South Conference next year, will join in 1995-96, raising NAC membership to 10. Hofstra, in Hempstead, N.Y., has 14 NAC-sponsored sports. Towson State, in Towson, Md., offers 18 sports with league competition. NAC members now include Boston University, Delaware, Drexel, Hartford, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Vermont Wright takes over Hofstra announced yesterday that Jay Wright, a longtime assistant to Rol-lie Massimino at Villanova and UNLV, was hired as the Flying Dutchmen's head coach. ! ( Wright, 32, becomes the 10th head coach in the 56-year history of the Hofstra program and replaces 71-year-old Butch van Breda Kolff, who retired after this past season. Van Breda Kolff had a 215-134 record in two stints at Hofstra covering 13 years. Huskies having a ball Northeastern's baseball team (13-6) has registered a 12-1 record since it re turned from its Southern swing and leads the NAC with a 9-1 mark. The Huskies host Drexel tomorrow and Sunday in doubleheaders. NU has been getting strong pitching from senior Pete Schwartz of Wareham (4-0), sophomore Chris Ennico of Westwood, N.J. (2-0), and freshman Jay O'Shaughnessy of Belmont (1-2). The offense has been paced by Derek Gauthier, Mike Glavine (brother of the Braves' Tom) and captain Mike Brun-ner. Ross leaves marks Rob Ross, a Bentley College graduate student and shortstop from Trumbull, Conn., owns six school career records: at-bats (461), runs (104), doubles ' (32), assists (358), stolen bases (76) and hit by pitch (28). He's three shy of the hit record (144) and 14 shy of the total base mark (210) . . . Babson's baseball team features four Melrose players: first , basemanrelief pitcher David DiGangi, relief pitcher Joe Crowley, outfielder Marc Cirone (.285) and utilityman Ted Hurley (.280) . . . Sophomore second baseman Danielle DeLucia of Franklin is batting .583 for Assumption's softball team and leading the Northeast-10 in hitting. She has nine doubles . . . The Assumption men's basketball team, which suffered through an 0-27 season, is expecting an excellent freshman class . . . Mike Giardi, who quarterbacked Harvard's football team last fall, is batting .492, tops in the Ivy League and sixth in the nation. He's also playing well at shortstop. O'Brien staying at BC Continued from Page 55 worked out a five-year deal with Gladchuk that is reportedly worth $150,000 annually. O'Brien, 44, currently in the second year of a three-year pact, will ha?e the extension tacked on, which will make him BC's coach for at least the next six seasons. "I am pleased that our discussions nave led to an extremely positive conclusion - one which reflects a high degree of support and enthusiasm for Jim's leadership," said Gladchuk. "We expect Jim O'Brien to lead Boston College to even greater accomplishments in the years to come." r'" Although O'Brien will lose the most prolific class in BC history - Bill Curley, Howard Eisley, Malcolm Huckaby and Gerrod Abram, all 1,000-point scorers -he will welcome a highly touted class of recruits led by Durfee guard Chris Her-reh, a McDonald's Ail-American. "I think they would be relieved," O'Brien said, "because this has come up in a lot of the conversations we've had with them - 'Are you going to be around?' Hopefully, this will put their minds at ease a little bit" -, - Said Herren, "I think it's great news for me, personally. I think it's good because you know you have a good, steady coach for the years that you're there. There's stability with his contract and it just makes me feel glad for him." O'Brien sought stability, security and a fair and equitable agreement when his attorney entered into negotiations with Gladchuk, who said he did not want any of his coaches in high-profile sports to feel disgruntled about their compensation. But when O'Brien's attorneys reportedly asked for additional security on the compensation package (which included pension, insurance, basketball camps and a Reebok contract), Gladchuk termed the request "unprecedented." "I can't speak for what he meant by 'unprecedented' because I'm not privy to what the other contracts were like," O'Brien said. "But we didn't ask for anything that was not fair or unjustified. What we were looking for all along was fair market value." So is O'Brien comfortable? "Absolutely," he said. "As I said, I thought Chet was very fair in this thing. He worked very hard to get this thing done. We were not making proposals when people thought we put this thing on hold. All we wanted to get was some clarification on things we weren't sure of, so there were never really any proposals or counterproposals." Still, when the process dragged on, it was rumored that O'Brien might begin looking elsewhere, even to Northeastern University, where his good friend Barry Gallup is athletic director. Asked if he considered exploring other options, O'Brien said, "No, not really. If that hurt me in negotiations, then so be it. I never implied that I had interest in any other programs, but that's not to say that's not going to change. But for now, I have no interest in going any other place. "I just feel really good about this," he added. "It's been a long road and I'm glad we finally got it done." Morrill notches 100th By Patrick Glennon CONTRIBUTING REPORTER Toward the end of last season, Dra-cut softball coach Dana Morrill was one victory away from his 100th. With three rhnnl games remaining, ,,u"' Morrill seemed des-rOUndup tined to reach the cen- tury mark in only his sixth year.as coach. "He had led Dracut to four Merrimack Valley Small titles and four trips to the Division 2 North final. But his hopes for 100 came and went Dracut dropped its last three decisions, forcing Morrill to put a celebration on hold -until jesterday. His players ended the waiting game early as they exploded for nine runs in the second inning en route to an 11-3 thrashing of Methuen in the season opener at Dracut "It's a great way to start the season," said Morrill. "The 100th win is just icing on the cake and it is nice to get it out of the way. This is a nice side note, but our goal is to win the Merrimack Valley League." ' ' Senior pitcher Carrie Ladebauche went the distance, striking out six and allowing just two hits, to pace Dracut Teammate Johanna DiCarlo opened the floodgates in the second with a bases-IlPded double. ' Bay State: Braintree defeated Newton North, 6-1, behind Mary Ellen Porter's five strikeouts. Baseball Boston City: Roberto Soroa hurled a no-hitter and struck out 17 as West Roxbury toppled Dorchester, 8-0. Javier Colon and Jay Heirston combined for seven hits and eight RBIs. Catholic Conference: Robert Cox collected three hits, including a double and a triple, as Don Bosco (2-1) edged Xaverian, 3-2 ... Trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh, Maiden Catholic rallied for three runs to beat St John's Prep, 5-4 Chris Caprio tied the game with a two-run single and Brian Hegan followed with a double for the winning RBI. Greater Boston League: Senior lefthander Joe Sousa fired a two-hitter and struck out 10 as Maiden (2-0, 1-0 league) blanked Everett, 7-0. Boys' track Middlesex: Reading coach Hal Croft watched his team run its dual-meet unbeaten streak to 200 as it beat Winchester, 965-47.5. Reading improved its record to 1990-1 since 1972.
