Notre Dame to top rung By HERSCHEL NISSENSON Associated Press Sports Writer Notre Dame completed its rise to the top of The Associate Press college football poll today, edging past Texas' defending national champions who in turn ousted Ohio State three weeks ago. Texas received 13 first-place votes and 783 points. Ohio State, Nebraska and Michigan held onto the 3-4-5 spots with 728, 638 and 607 po nts, respectively. Each received three first-place votes, with the remaining one Notre Dame hain't been No.

(AP) -Kansas State is getting ready for its most important Big Eight Conference football clash the campaign, Saturday's meeting with Nebraska at Lincoln. Neb. With a victory over the Corn- buskers, the Wildcats can turn the Big Eight title into a two-way deadlock between the two teams.

The Cornhuske-s are now 5-0 in conference play and the Wildcats 5-1. "We'll play good against Ne braska," Kansas State Coach Gibson predicts. "One thing we can do is play defense with 'em. To beat 'em, you've got to be able to throw the football, am we can do that, too." Gibson says the thing that "Bothers me most about Ne iwraska is their great offensive balance. We've got to establish a running game to beat Ne braska, and we've got to shu their running game off." Gibson says he thinks Kansas State has "some of the best lefensive players in the conference.

I don't think anybody's better than Mike Kuhn, Ron Yankowski, Oscar Gibson, Clarence Scott and Mike Kolich." The Kansas State defense is eing geared to try to stop the running of Nebraska's Joe Oiuu- na and Johnny Rodgers and the passing of the Cornhuskers' quarterbacks, Jerry Tagge and Van Brownson. With six victories and three defeats, Kansas State has more triumphs than any Wildcat team since 1954. The Wildcats have won four games in a row for the first time since 1953. Since Gibson took over at Kansas State as coach, Nebraska has won two games from the Wildcats and lost one. Nebraska won in 1967 by 16-14 and last year by 10-7. By ROBERT MOORE KANSAS CITY (AP) Jerry Tagge has fallen into the role of star reliever on unbeaten Nebraska's football pitching staff. He was summoned from the bullpen-last Saturday to start against Iowa State and directed the Cornhuskers to their 54-29 victory over the Cyclones. Tlie call for Tagge came after Coach Bob Devaney found that Van Brownson's arm was a little tiff before the game and that Vebraska's regular quarterback recent games also "wasn't throwing good enough."
