Heavy damage in fire along famed Boardwalk ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) A general alarm fire damaged at least seven shops along a block-long stretch of this city's famous Boardwalk Saturday, causing damage estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to 100 yards of the wooden boardwalk alone, according to Police Chief William Cade.

He estimated damage to the stores could reach $1 million. There were no immediate reports of injuries. The fire on the walkway was brought under control quickly by some 400 firemen and policemen, but the blaze continued unabated for more than two hours in several buildings, destroying the tourist shops. Public Safety Director Mario Floriani said the cause of the blaze was not known. "She's just like I thought she'd be," Janet said of Ginny.

Kansans charge son, with kidnaping own child (C) New York Times NEW YORK An elderly Kansas couple who claim to be legal guardians of a 4-year- old girl are charging their son and his wife with kidnaping the child who all parties agree is their own. Kevin Jones, 27, a law student, was arrested and later released on a $500 cash bond in lieu of $5000 bail after the police had seized him and his daughter while they were strolling near Jones' home here. In an interview, Jean Jones, 22, the girl's mother, said her husband and daughter, Jennifer, were stopped by Kevin Jones' father, John Jones, and his attorney, Ralph Skoog, both of whom traveled here from Kansas to regain custody of the girl.

"Kevin called for help from police at the Sixth precinct down the street," Mrs. Jones said, but when the police took all of the parties to the station, Jones was arrested. Mrs. Jones said she would surrender to the police Monday. The warrant, dated Aug.

5, 1972, was filed in Kansas City by John Jones and his wife, Virginia. It charges their son and his wife with kidnaping and burglary on July 10 when they allegedly abducted Jennifer from her grandparents' home in Ottawa, Kas. "I have no doubt my father will press charges," Jones said, Both sides in the dispute over the child related different versions of incidents surrounding an agreement between Jennifer's parents and her grandparents and stemming back to her birth in April, 1968. Mr. and Mrs.

Kevin Jones were not married then, according to Jean Jones. "We didn't want her parents to find out about the pregnancy, either," said Jones, who was then a student in Maryland. Jones appealed to his father for help, he said, shortly after the baby's birth, and his father responded by flying from his home in Glenview 111., near Wilmette, where Jean lived with her parents before moving to Maryland with Kevin. "Because the baby was born with a scar on her forehead and because our plans were uncertain," said the mother, "the child was placed in a foster home as a preliminary step toward offering her for public adoption." John Jones, Kevin's father, who Was then an attorney for an oil company, counseled against the adoption, Jean Jones said, finally convincing the couple to allow him and his wife to take custody. "We were reluctant to do that," said Kevin Jones, "because my mother was in poor health and we didn't think she was able to take care of Jennifer.

But finally we agreed." Soon after, he said the elder Jones produced a document that "he said was a paper giving him authorization to travel across state lines with the child and permitting him the right to give her medical attention without our permission. Though the paper later proved to be a document granting the grandparents permanent custody, Kevin Jones said, they signed it unknowingly, trusting in his father's integrity as well as his legal expertise. Skoog denied Kevin Jones' charge. "The father tried to get Kevin to marry Jean and give the child a name," Skoog said. "They agreed to keep her birth unknown from Jean's mother and father and moved from Glenview to Ottawa, which meant Mr.

Jones had to take an early retirement. "The grandparents were willing to assume the medical costs," he added, referring to the early fear of problems resulting from the scar on Jennifer's forehead -fears that proved unfounded "and now these young people have decided they want her back," He said, "even though they took her when nobody else in the world seemed to want her."
