A number of spokesmen defended the contract in talking to reporters Thursday, and genby Bauer that news coverage erally took the position voiced on the matter has been "slanted." This was the position taken by W.

A. Elliott. Don Lenertz also said he thought the news coverage to date has been "one-sided, but said that "we've simply been taken." let the opposition get there first," he conceded. As one point in what he considers news coverage, Lenertz pointed out that a statement by Mrs. DeShazor two weeks ago said that she had "more than 300 signers" for the petition which she had been circulating asking for the referendum.

In contrast, he said, when the petition was submitted to City Council Monday evening there were only 273 signatures on the several copies, some of which were deleted because the signers were not qualified city voters. In addition, he said, more than 40 persons asked to have their names stricken from the petition. This left a total of slightly more than 190 qualified signers, he pointed out. The 190 signers, however, constituted a sufficient m- ber of the total qualified voters to require calling the referendum under terms of the Port Lavaca City Charter. However, the same effect can be achieved by cue bidding the opponents' suit, as is evidenced by North's three diamond bid in today's hand. North's call announces, "Partper, it is my intention to play this hand at game. If you have a four card major suit holding, I expect you to show it at this point.

South's opening one no trump bid appeared to preclude the possibility of the defenders taking trick in either black suit, but the use of North's high heart on the third diamond suggested to West that a further assault on declarer's trump holding might prove profitable.

West led back a fourth round of diamonds on which club was thrown from dummy, East realized that South was void of diamonds also so, in an effort to do something for his partner, he ruffed ip with the nine of hearts. The House of Representatives was subjected to a similar tactic, which probably succeded only because it came on Christmas Eve," the telegram said. "I recall that President Johnson in his speech to us on Nov. 27 spoke of the Congress as his home and indicated his respect for an independent legislative branch. His action on the foreign aid bill contradicted that." In case he is unable to attend the Monday session, Goldwater told Trice, "please record me as opposed to foreign economic aid and particularly so if it fails to protect our taxpayers on the wheat deal." Whatever Goldwater decides to do about seeking his party's presidential nomination, he already has been dropped as principal target of Gov.

Nelson A. Rockefeller, the only announced candidate. Associates of the New York governor indicate this stems from a belief in the Rockefeller camp that Goldwater has become a less attractive candidate against Johnson than he would have been against the late President John F. Kennedy. They make no claims that Rockefeller has passed Goldwater in popular support but believe the field is now wide The reasoning is that there would not be much to gain in continuing to single out one man among many who may be considered for the nomination.

The new British troop men movement called for 1,000 in a British infantry battalion to be flown into Cyprus from Britain by Friday night. The first detachment of 250 left Thursday night. How to enlist greater help from business, labor, universities, states and cities; 3. How to encourage more self-help by aid-receiving countries; how to promote greater aid contributions by other prospering countries, and 4. How to achieve economies and efficiencies and cut aid payrolls to a "practical minimum. In addition, Johnson called upon the committee to recommend machinery to be used by Thomas C. At Borger, bankers said the reports added more optimism for the future, augmented by civic efforts for new industry and the expected 1965 completion of the Canadian River Dam 15 miles from the West Texas city. Abilene's record was attribluted to good crops and more activity in oil and at Dyess Air Force Base. Said a Fort Worth banker, "The recovery from the Nov. 22 shooting death of President Kennedy has been marvelous: due to adequate communications and that the nation had the best qualified man ready to step into such an emergency than at any time before in the history of the nation."
