Saturday, June 3,1950. The fJastoni'a fN. Combers And Granite Falls Tangle Tonight KEN MEET WEIME BROWN' Tile biith records in the New Hanover county courthouse would have his name listed as Wade Andrew Brown, but 11 you call him anything else but Weinlc you're likely placing yourself in an unpleasant situation. "I guess the name's all right," said Welnle Just before taking the mound against Marlon la.st night, "but it's that I've just got used to the name Welnle." You'd understand why Oas- tonla's smallest pitcher acquired his nickname i( you'd' ever seen him. He stands five-fcet-three- inches tall and weighs less than 13a pounds.

Yet, those dimensions certainly don't keep the dynamic little southpaw from throwing hard. Weinie's a hard worker, but as so many other hurlers he lias trouble with control. "Just cant seem to get started for some reason or other," he said. The Wilmington native is young In the pro game. He's played with Sanford of the Tobacco State League and Shelby and Lincolnton ol the Western Carolina loop.

Weinle went to spring training with the Greensboro Patriots of the Class Carolina League in 1949, and was dispatched to Sanford as soon as the season started. He doesn't like to talk about his record for the Tobacco State loop cTutfit, but Weinie did mumble something about a 2-9 record lor the Spinners. The latter part ol last season he wns with Lincolnton and this year the Patriots lold him to Shelby. Gastonia, with a definite end urgent need for Icfthanded pitching, bought him from the Farmers several days Weinie is 22 years old, and starred for two seasons on championship New Hanover High School teams. As a matter of fact he pitched against Gastonla In 1946.

"I was coming along fine in '47 too." said Wclr.le, and because I pitched for Tabor City over the weekend Coach Brogden (Leon) dismissed me from the squad. Of course, I suppose I was to blame because he had told us quite frankly not to play any other baseball until the high school season was over." The S'oung lefthander has a Rense of humor. He was asked if he'd planned to go on up. Weinie replied: "Me, no I'm too small, much too small, and there isn't much of a chance of growing anytime soon." There aren't many pitchers in the Western Carolina League or any other league for that matter who don't throw "duster" pitches occasionally. "It's just baseball," explains Joe Mclntosh who has authored some controversial dust off pilches this season as a pitcher for the Gastonia Browns.

"I'm simply not letting anybody dig in against me." said Joe, and with a. hitter like Walt Dixon up to the plate, he's not going to get a toe hold and blast every pitch out of the lot." Mclntosh explained this funny happening in Morgantpn one night last year. "I had a 2-0 count on a batter. He was a pretty fair hitter, so I decided to loosen him up. I came In with a curving strike right over the heart of the plate.

It fooled me, the ump and also the batter," STOCK CAR RACES AT SPEEDWAY Race Director Buddy Davenport figures lhat Die breaks should be corning his way tonight. He's directed four races at the Gastonia Speedway since it opened up over a month ago, and the crowds have been thin to say tile 'east. The second time a race was scheduled Jimmy Hughes and Bill Wilson fought a championship fight at the Armory, and the next time Davenport's speedway event conflicted with a high school championship baseball game at the. stadium.
