H. and Samuel Foster composed the Presbytery. There is no record of the charter members of the Hickory Plains Church, but the following are known to be among them: W. Durton and wife, j. W.

K. Pastell was the lirat pastor. A few years after the organization of this church, the Hickory Plains post office and store which were about two and one- half miies almost due south of the present Slidell, were moved to the corner of the Lvi Muncy place where they for two years after which Mr. Fletcher agreed to sell some town lots, and so to make possible the growing up of a little town which was called Slidell. Dr.

Battle, the father of Mrs. J. P. Turner, is said to have named the town after a John Slidell of Louisiana. About five years after the or- Kanization of the Baptists at iMr.

a Baptist Church building was constructed where the new building constructed, where the new church now stands. Tliis was the first Baptist Church built at Slidell. The site for the church and for a cemetery was a gift of Mr. Garrett Fletcher. Ten years after the first church house was built, it was moved to the mid- tUe street here in Slidell and converted into a residence, and a new and larger church house was built.

Read John Dickson Read was born in Wise County December Si, 1889 and has lived in Wise County, in the Cotteudale, Paradise and Flatwoode communities all his life. He attended school in Cotten- dale, and was reared on a farm, ills J. F. and Alice Read were citizens of Wise County. Dud, as he was known to his relatives and friendR, was married to Miss Irene Pike of Newark July 20, 1913 and eleven children was borni-d to the union, all living.

Mr. Read was converted in his early manhood and united i the Paradise Baptist Church. After his marriage, and his wife united with the Paradise Methodist Church vhere he held membership at ihe time of his death. He wan an active faithful mem- Church building that had been erected in August of 1933 on a lot just north of the town square. The building was destroyed by fire at 12:30 Thursday morning, January 18, 1951.

Since that time, a new brick building has been erected. During these 71 years, alnce these early Christian ers met in the hackberry grove, many pastors have served the church. Following the first pastor, Rev. T. K.

Pastell, was Rev. S. G. Christal who se'rved for 18 years, resigning then because of ill health. This is the longest country pastorate that has been held in he Deuton Co.

C. Nance, Saul Carpenter, Harold Maze, and V. E. Giedon, who pastors church now. her and was a member of the Board of Stewards for over 20 s.

After he moved to the Flat woods Community from South part of the county, active in the work of the Flat- wood Baptist Church. He depared this life by ac cldental death at his home Sat- afternoon December 1 at about 3 o'clock at the age of 62 years, 11 months and 1 day. He Is survived by his wife, Mrs. Irene Read, five and eix sons, Mrs, Rayford Carlton of Bridgeport; Mrs Wherman of San Antonio; Mrs. Hoyce Hudson of Df'catur; Pat Sue Read and Peggy Joyce Read of Decatur; D.

Read of Bridgeport; Ernest Read of Bridgeport; Sergeant Harold Dean Read of Camp HoOd and Billy Read of Tokio, Japan Read and Marvin Rejid of Decatur. He la also survived by nine grandchildren and fourteen and sisters who are Mrs. J. M. Mann and Mr, Will Read of Bridgeport, Mrs.

K. K. Blakeley of Electra, John Head, Mrs. Loyd Bivins, Mrs. Milford Smith and Jack Read of Boyd.

Mrs. Charley Burchfield of Rhome, Mrs. Dick Oravea of Levelland, Texas, Mrs. Sidney Daggett of Harrold, Texas, Mrs. Leslie, Archer City, Texas, Mrs.

Westley Devaney and E. J. Read of Wichita Falls, Clarence Read of Springtown and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the Paradise Gymnasium building Tuesday December 4th at 2:30 p. m.
