Latest market report Stock prices rise in active trading IEW YORK mpn 9 NEW YORK (UPI) Bargain hunters helped drive prices higher Tuesday in moderately active trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Analysts said the buying had started late Monday and continued early in this session. Observers said there was little in the news background to account for the selective- buying however. Shortly before noon EDT, the Dow Jones industrial average, a 5.81-point loser Monday, was ahead 5.73 points to 963.82. The closely-watched blue-chip average had lost more than 15 points the previous two sessions.

KGE charged with violating state law i IT WICHITA, Kan. (UPI) Kansas Gas Electric was charged Monday night with violating state law by making an illegal contribution to opponents of Tuesday's California nucler power referendum.

The charges were filed with Sedgwick County District Judge Howard Kline about 6 p.m. Monday by assistant Attorney General Donald Hoffman. The action followed a four-hour afternoon conference between Hoffman, Sedgwick County District Attorney Keith Sanborn and members of Sanborn's staff. Last Wednesday, Attorney General Curt Schneider announced he might file charges against the utility for making two $1,500 contributions from stockholder funds to a California committee opposed to the proposition. The referendum, if approved, would ban nuclear power plants for an indefinite period.

Kansas Gas Electric pians to construct a nuclear generating facility in a cooperative effort with Kansas City Power Light Co. Kansas Gas Electric specifically is charged with two counts of violating Kansas Statutes 25-1709 and 25-1710, which forbid corporations doing business in Kansas from contributing to a campaign for any candidate or for any question submitted to the voters. Company officials say they do not believe the statute is applicable in the case. Doug Stratton, an attorney for the firm, Monday night said he had "no response to the charges at this point." The action by Hoffman was unusual in that the attorney general's office normally supplies evidence to local authorities who then file charges. Sanborn declined comment on why his office did not file the charges but said "we are cooperating procedurally." Hoffman also is investigating a similar $4,000 contribution in the California matter by Santa Fe railway and he said the filing of charges against Santa Fe in Topeka is still under consideration.

Sheriff's department expands The Saline county sheriff's department has expanded into the former night jailer's quarters on the 2nd floor of the facility. The 5-room apartment, including full kitchen and bath, now houses the department's patrol division. Two bedrooms have been converted into office space for Patrol Lt. Gene Hindman and a general-purpose office to be shared by patrolmen on duty. A living room now will be used for daily briefings, and the 3rd bedroom contains deputies' lockers.

"Sinca we have a jailer awake and on duty 24 hours a day now, we don't need anyone living up there anymore," said Sheriff Erv Hindman, who okayed the move proposed by Lt. Hindman and Capt. Richard Hurley. Former night jailer Dan Funk, the last occupant of the apartment, now is a jailer and dispatcher for the Dickinson county sheriff's office. Lt.

Hindman said the expansion is being accomplished at "no additional expense whatsoever" to Saline county taxpayers. "The space was just available, and we decided to put it to use." The new briefing room also will serve as meeting space for the sheriff's reserve officers, mounted patrol and rescue squad. "They used to have to hold their meetings in the basement of the police station," Lt. Hindman said. Remaining downstairs will be the investigative and records divisions, offices of the sheriff, undersheriff, warrant officer and civil process server.

The evidence locker will be moved to a more convenient location, and one first-floor room remains available for future expansion. Send your news tip to The Salina $17 in prizes every week. Today's records Hospital Admissions St. John's Mrs. Lester Aills, 1034 N.
