terback David Byrne and wideouts Dennis Willcox and Scott Howard. The legitimate challengers to Xaverian are defending champ St. John's Prep and BC High. Prep coach Joe O'Leary finally snapped his Xaverian jinx by beating them last year for the first time and winning 11 straight before losing to Brockton in the Division 1 playoffs. The Prep lost Division 1 leading scorer and Globe Player of the Year Kevin Dwan, but returns both of last year's starting signal callers, Steven YValthum players salute Division IB Waltham By Jim McBride SPECIAL TO THE GLOBE Since joining the Greater Boston League in 1990, the Waltham football team has done one thing well -win.

Dan Keohane's club sports a 20-1 record over the last two campaigns, with an 11-0 mark in 1991, including the Division IB championship. Once again, league coaches are looking at Waltham as the team to beat, with Arlington, Peabody and Medford just waiting for the reigning champs to slip up. Waltham will replace its power ful backfield of Jeff Fuller, Rupert English and Matt Quinn with halfbacks John Ferguson (a starting flanker in '91) and Francois Joseph. C. Anthony Roane will switch from tight end to fullback, while Steve Patten and Joe Cincotta will battle for the quarterback slot.

"Both Patten and Cincotta do a nice job," said Keohane. "It may end up that we'll be using both of them." Patten's conversion kick gave Waltham a 21-20 win over Bridgewater-Raynham in the Division IB playoffs. It'll be no Cakewalk for Waltham. Besides playing in the tough GBL, Keohane's club opens with Old Colony power Weymouth, and finishes the season with a Thanksgiving date with perennial powerhouse Walpole. Arlington has a host of veterans returning from a 7-3 squad, with quarterback Tim Hirsch and tailback Bob McLaughlin (960 yards last season) leading the offense.

"Hirsch and McLaughlin will have to take the pressure off each other," said coach John Handley, whose offensive line, includes Brian Patterson (6 feet 3 inches, 225 pounds), Matt Moschella (6-1, 195) and Jeremy Auger (6-1, 215). Peabody hopes to bounce hack from an off year in 1991, and coach Ed Nizwantowski welcomes back most of his defense. Linebackers John Carpenter and Sean Mahoney return, as well as defensive ends Doug McDonald and John Wood and defensive backs Bill Woods, Rick Bettencourt and Scott Marcoulier. The job of running Peabody's offense will fall into the hands of Woods, who'll switch to quarterback after being a flanker last year. Medford finished last season with five straight wins, but coach Buddy Kelley is quick to point out, "What you did last year doesn't win games for you this year." Kelley lost quarterback Mike Moreno, but is hoping that Dave Dussault can step in and lead a ball control offense that features running back Paul Morey.

The offensive line is anchored by Rob Greco (6-1, 210), Jimmy Bennett (6 feet, 185), Chi-is Modica (5-10, 210) and Rich Marino (6 feet, 190). Maiden coach Paul Finn is facing a numbers problem, and to make matters worse, a user's fee ($50 per sport, with a $100 limit per family) has been installed for the first time. "We're looking at the smallest turnout in history," said Finn. "Well be lucky to have 30 kids. Obviously the user's fee isn't going to help." Finn will look to veteran quarterback Rob Steber to run the offense, while talented safety Kevin Duthley is a mainstay on defense.

Cunningham 6-4 285 Jr. Defense Kevin Duthley S-WR 6-4 lfjt) Sr. Jamal Jones DB 5-10 175 Sr. Gary LoPresti LB 5-10 185 Sr. By Mike Biglin SPECIAL TO THE GLOBE No one ever said that Xaverian's George McCabe was the king of hyperbole.

But even the 17-year veteran coach can't help but spout positives about his newest collection of football players. Not only is Xaverian the unanimous choice by coaches to win the competitive Catholic Conference, but this team may well be one of the finest group of athletes in the area. McCabe returns 10 starters, with all but two playing both sides of the ball, and the bulk of them comprise some of the best talent in Eastern Mass. Division 1. i "I don't see anybody stopping them," Maiden Catholic coach Rich Cullen said.

"They're just head and shoulders above the rest." Leading the way will be the senior offensive backfield of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and running backs Brendan Kennedy and Greg Cornelia. Hasselbeck, the son of former Patriot Don, has one full season under his belt and it shows in his maturity and confidence. Hassel-beck's strong arm and poise will complete the perfect offensive puzzle, as Cornelia and Kennedy (last year's fifth and sixth top scorers, respectively, in Division 1) form the most talented backfield in EMass. McCabe tried to describe his dynamic duo: "Cornelia looks like a big bruiser and he is but he can run around you as easily as run over you. Kennedy doesn't have the upper body strength like Greg, but he has incredible leg drive and has a knack of finding the holes." "The advancement of Hasselbeck just adds another dimension to an already potent offense," Cullen said.

"They are now almost impossible to defend." Cullen's squad did last year, however, upsetting Xaverian the night before Thanksgiving, 15-14. It was the highlight of a competitive first campaign for Cullen, whose team finished with a somewhat deceiving 2-6-1 record. But the climb up the conference ladder will be a rocky one, with the graduation of his entire defense and offensive line. Cullen will look to run and shoot with talented skiirposition people like quar- Moses and Matt Marvin. O'Leary also feels he has a talented replacement for Dwan at tailback, senior cornerback Andy Four-nier (6 feet, 190 pounds), who has 4.5 speed, according to O'Leary.

After meeting early in the schedule the past few years, the Prep and Xaverian will now battle on Thanksgiving Day, probably for the Conference title. BC High's Jim Cotter returns 11 starters, mostly on a defense that is tough against the run. BC is inexperienced in the backfield, with untested quarterback Jeff Devlin and a cast of running backs including Tim Dormady and Andre Farhat. But Devlin will have a lethal target in receiver Jay Schnabel and a solid offensive line with Dan Knapp, Mark Bourque and Dave Cooney. Ralph Calvanese becomes only the third head coach in Catholic Memorial history, and he describes filling the shoes of 12-year man Hank Cutting "like Jay Leno taking over the Tonight Show." Calvanese is no stranger to these lands he was Cutting's defensive coordinator for five years.

He has confidence in his linebacking corps of Robert Lynch and Jason Treannie, but he will have to find skill position players who can produce out of what he calls very talented junior class." Last year, Don Bosco left the conference and played an independent schedule, and it resulted in a .500 record (4-4-2). Rookie coach Skip Bandini comes from Reading. The response has so far been excellent, with more than 50 players reporting, compared to last year's 26. The best of the crop is quarterback Dave Lilly and tight end -Scott 1991 CATHOLIC CONF.
