"We will, we will rock you," intoned Bush on the giant the trickery courtesy of Boston's EBN video-rock group. While mimicking Bush's fractured syntax, U2 jabbed the prez's reliance on buzzwords and, on a more prosaic level, suggested that U2 would do as countless stadium bands have done before: Rock us on a grand scale. U2 'did it by mixing songs with dizzying, sometimes disorienting special effects, and still, somehow, zeroing in on the songs' emotional centers. U2 is at the top of the world right now.

and they've got it both ways: They get to parody megalomaniac rock, stars and they get to be those rock'stars. Women wore colorful hoopskirts and men Union battle dress.

It was all part of the wedding festivities for Joe Shaydac and Nancy Adams, both descendants of Civil War veterans. Chaplain Russell C. Dannecker from Foster, R.I., married the couple. Battery which served during the Civil War, took a break from reenacting Civil War battles to provide a historical setting for the Shay-dac-Adams wedding. Shaydac is a member of Battery B.

NEAR MKKj PAKSO. mm BRAINTREE U2 At: Foxboro Stadium Saturday night singer Bono, who didn't break from the form established during the early phase of this Zoo TV US tour back in the spring. Bono began the sold-out shindig before 51,000 dressed in shiny black garb and wraparound shades, looking like Bonofly, and closed it two hours later in an Elvislike gold lame suit, all full of himself. First image: industrial, hard-edged, terse, post-punk. Closing image: A guy having fun with over-the-top shtick, spoofing Vegas and rock showbiz.

And, yet, during that latter segment U2 played "Pride (In the Name of Love)," the uplifting song that salutes Martin Luther King -and a clip of a King speech cut in at the song's climax. U2 served up one big boatload of the passion, intimacy and sensuality that's always been at the core of whatever they've done from the early, yearning days through the mid-'80s anthemic rock period up to today's semi-grinding, semi-atmo- MM to share aJ for SHOWCASE CINEMAS CIRCLE etivi land ciacu 566-4040 LOEWS FRESH POND ME in POND MALL 661-2900 CINEMAS SHOWCASE CINEMAS LOEWS UMRTY TREI MALL DANVERS 777-1111 SM-3IJJ REVERE "SHOWCASE CINEMAS' WOBURN RT. 128 EXIT 35 ART. 933-5330 10EWS DANVERS RT. 1 28 EXIT 24 777 2555 593 2100 FOR THIS ENGAGEMENT CAMBRIDGE BRATTLE THEATRE 876-6837 OUT OF THE PAST.

All the accouterments of this stadium tour (an upscaling of the earlier hockey arena tour) the mega-video screens, the overhanging "Christine'Mike autos, the bombard of electronic buzzwords and random images suggest U2's britches have gotten mighty big. They're no more a straight rock band than is Pink Floyd and that can be a double-edged sword: Spectacle does not always equal quality. Thing is, the quartet from Dublin Bono plus guitarist Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. -has grown into those XX-large togs and they wear 'em well. Even if, in the classic cult-to-superstar equation that U2 now means less to more people U2's less is still a politico-infotainment overload.

And don't forget one of the messages flashed up on screen: "Celebrity is a job, death is a career move, rebellion is packaged." At this point in their career, U2 can have it any way they want Bush-bashing liberals, Bird-praising Celts, Irish sentimentalists (Mullen came out front to sing "The Wild dream weavers, down-to-earth folks (Bono opened a bottle of champagne and danced with one lucky woman) and pranksters (a snippet from ABBA's frothy "Dancing Queen" cut into the serious "Angel of The key to U2's tour is that mesh, that constant jumble of stimuli coupled to that emotional core. You've got all these diversionary pieces of rock 'n' roll shrapnel raining down upon you, and stiM, the band sends shivers down your spine. Cynical as I might often be, wary of superstardom as I always am, and ready to mount a backlash if I must, I'll admit outright to a dozen or so major chills: during Axl Rose's fave tune "One," the slinky "Mysterious Ways," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Mystery Girl" (a brief, affectionate Roy Orbison tribute from Bono solo) and "New Year's Day." U2 paid tribute to a band that spoofed them with an electro-pop rendition of "Where the Streets Have No Name" that was closer to the Pet Shop Boys', version than to their own. What cheek! Are you sensing a sensory overload? OK. You got it.

But it was also an emotional overload and that's what the best rock 'n roll always promised and that's what U2 delivers. Still. All your hopes and fears and dreams and loose ends, tossed up -there randomly, almost the way Bono the channel surfer scanned through the local TV offerings early in the show.
