THE BOSTON GLOBE FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1992 33 Vintage Films Big screen 'Lawrence' at the Brattle By Jay Carr GLOBE STAFF back weekly. But because Lean knew what he wanted and didn't give Spiegel many alternative takes, the film was assembled Lean's way. It's on Sunday at the Brattle in bridge "Shall We Dance" (1937) one of the very best Fred Ginger matchups, with a Gershwin score that boasts "They Can't Take That Away from Me," "They All Laughed" and "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off." Another classic on Thursday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. at the Wellesley Free Library, 530 Washington Elia Kazan's film of Ten-nesee Williams' "Streetcar Named Desire" (1951), with an unforgettable quartet: Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh, Kim Hunter and Karl Elsewhere, the Boston Public Library offers "Arsenic and Old Lace" (1944) on its Frank Capra series Monday at 3 and 6 p.m. Josephine Hull and Jean Adair star as Cary Grant's Brooklyn aunts who combine gentility and mass murder, setting the stage for some of his best double-takes.

"Born Yesterday" (1950), the George Cukor-Garson Kanin comedy pitting not-so-dumb blonde Judy Holliday against junkyard tycoon Paul Douglas, will be screened free on Wednesday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. at the Brodkline Public Library, 361 Washington St. Free on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the BPL's West End branch, 151 Cam "Little Nemo" follows the pajama-clad title character as he travels to Slumberland and Nightmare Land. When he next falls asleep, a troupe of courtiers and Professor Genius take Nemo and his flying squirrel Icarus by dirigible to the court of King Morpheus of Slumberland, where Nemo is to be the playmate of Princess Camille. The most interesting character is the rotund con-man Flip, the perennial bad influence. Flip's character is the closest in design to McCay's original drawings, and Mickey Rooney gives perfect voice to this spirit of anarchy me, The plot involves Nemo's attempt to rescue It's wide and it's sandy. It is, of course, "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) David Lean's sweeping epic of desert romanticism that propelled Peter OToole into stardom after Lean's pursuit of Albert Finney came to nothing.

Revived a few years ago, it has won a new TV-reared and consequently grandeur-starved public that avidly devoured its largeness of scale and emphasis on pictorial splendors. Lean always went first class, and his largesse extends to his cast, which includes, in addition to O'Toole's quintessential romantic English schoolboy adventurer, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif, Jack Hawkins, Jose Ferrer, Claude Rains, Anthony Quayle and Arthur Kennedy. Lavish as the film was visually, Lean shot it with his customary economy, editing with the camera. Although this new film adaptation of Winsor McCay's comic strip has been somewhat homogenized for modern tastes, both in visual style and in storyline, it's a refreshing, mostly marvelous piece of fantasy. McCay was one of the pioneers of the comic strip and of the animated film. His "Little Nemo in Slumberland," featuring splashy colors and precise drawings of outlandish fantasy settings, ran in the New York Herald from 1905 to 1911.

Exported to Europe, the strip was an influence on the surrealists.
