Carmel High School teachers holding North Egypt Conference passes into extracurricular activities in District 348 was reversed this morning (Thursday) by Superintendent Larry The situation arose Wednesday at the weekly meeting of the District 348 Boosters about who should, and who should not, receive free admission to extracurricular activities.

The discussion began In pro baseball SIU revamps Shipanoff numbers next weeks meeting to situation. amplify the When the original announcement about the free passes was made, opposition was expressed on a selective basis by some Boosters. Jim Warren said he felt the teachers should work at the games and those volunteers who were working had purchased season passes. Free had been given in the pa.t to some workers, but that was on a single-game basis only, the discussion revealed. Shipanoff was traded to the Phillies on April 1 of this year along with Jose Escobar and Ken Kinnard for Len Matusak. He was leading the Pacific Coast League in saves with 13 at the time when the Phillies called him up. Opposing batters were hitting a meager .217 against him and he had not allowed an earned run in his last seven games with the AAA Portland Beavers. He also quired Dave Ahrens, linebacker, from the St.

"We want to free up their money for projects of their choice," he added.

"We don't want to infringe on their goals, but we do hope, down the road, to lighten their load. Bradfield said he planned Albert, Alberta, Canada, where he graduated from Paul Kane High School. The veteran offensive line includes returning starters at every position but center Tom Baugh, a 272-pound senior, is getting attention. "He's a potential pro," said Dorr. "He's an outstanding player with unlimited potential." Tim Redmond and Brad Banbury are veteran guards, while Ralph Van Dyke, David Smith, J.P. Watters and Pete Jansons are experienced tackles.

But all the holes the line punches in ODDOsing defenses might be wasted if an untested running back corps fails. Bruce Phibbs, who led the team with 579 yards last season, suffered an injury in spring football but is back in action now. The tailback will be sophomore Byron Mitchell, who gained 84 yards last year. There is no one else with much experience. The receivers are more seasoned.

Sebron Spivey sat out last season, after playing on the national championship 'team. Bobby Sloan, Nate McGhee, who caught 12 passes last year, and James Stevenson also will be primary targets. On defense, eight starters return, along with six junior college transfers. "I think our defense will be excellent," said Dorr. Number 33 is Dave Shipanoff, former Wabash Valley College Warriors baseball player and the first from WvC to make it into the major leagues. Shipanoff attended WVC in 1979-80, the first season for current Coach Bob Snyder. He was 16-0 that year with a no-hitter to his credit against a fine Southeastern Illinois Falcons club. Shipanoff is a native of St.

Transactions CARBONDALE, 111. (AP)V Ray Dorr expects Southern Illinois to play a lot more like 1983's national champions this season, which would be a big Improvement over his first year as the Saluki coach. After posting a 13-1 mark and winning the NCAA Division 1-AA national title in 1983 under Rey Dempsey, the team felTto 34 under Dorr last season, losing their last four games. Although Dorr isn't saying what he would consider success in 1985, "I feel confident they can play above .500," he said. The Salukis welcome 15 starters back and play their first two games at home, including the opener Saturday against Lincoln University.

"We have a chance to get some momentum," Dorr said. But any momentum will face a tough test in the third game of the season, when they play at Illinois. "No one expects us to win," he said of that con; test, although he expects the Salukis to play respectably. "That game could do a lot for the team," Dorr said. The, defense has Jefe, termen returning in all positions, while the offensive line is strong and the kick-, ing game proven, he said.

Quarterback is a big question mark, however. Darren Dixon is gone, and red-shirted freshman Kevin, Brown is running ahead Of sophomore Pat King in early practices. King completed 41 of 82 passes for 478 yards and two touchdowns in limited action last year. Dorr said he will use both players for the first three games before determining a starter. NDNN passes.

Sams added that a concern voiced to him this past year from students dealt with the teachers not attending the extracurricular activities. But Bradfield reversed the decision today. He said NEC passes from other conference schools would be honored here and that MCHS teachers would receive the passes but for use only at away activities. as we've had to replace, we had to have hard work. The great thing is that the kids nave had a great attitude.

They've worked hard and haven't complained one bit. They've done exactly what we've wanted them to do," he said. Lockhart said the team had improved steadily from the beginning and that some question marks he had about the offensive line were answered when he had a chance to look at the game's video tape. The coach also expressed pleasure at the people filling the slots in the skill positions. Of particular note was the decision to move junior Mike Ewald into the starting quarterback position and move last year's starter, senior Doug Wirth, to tailback.

"I contemplated the move all year," Lockhart said. He added that all the coaches involved in the Western Kentucky and Eastern Illinois football camps had voiced positive comments earlier in the summer about the switch. About the opening opponent, Lockhart said, "It's a challenge. They were 6-3 last year, getting beat by one point by Marion and by a touchdown by someone else. And that was a junior ballclub." "They have four linemen back and their quarterback and two running backs back. A lot of them turn around and play defense, as well," he said. "They're going to have a very experienced team.

They feel they have a shot at winning the South Seven although it'll be tough." "It's a good game for us to start off with. It's a good measuring stick. We're going to find out right off the bat if we can do it even though we're not as big as we want to be," the coach added. "It was hard to get the team up for Mascoutah.
