THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE NOVEMBER 8, 1092 Colleges A breakthroudi for Harvard, Giardi By Joe Concannon GLOBE STAFF An up-and-down season for Harvard quarterback Mike Giardi took an upward turn r-w 4 EES Giardi pass this year to the 4. After the Bears ended up at the 9 on fourth down, Ed Miko-lay's 26-yard field goal bid was low. The Crimson moved to the Brown 12, but Hill was caught for a 6-yard loss and Harvard was penalized for holding. Giardi's errant pitch was recovered by teammate Jason Sla-vik out at the 33, leading to a 51-yard field goal bid by Mark Hall that was short. The Bears then went on a 66-yard drive in 14 plays, with Pienias finding Nate Taylor for a 1-yard touchdown pass at 14:28.

It went this way the rest of the game, as the Crimson never trailed. Hall's 36-yard field goal made it 16-7 at 5:53 of the third period, but the Bears cut it to 16-13 when Pienias found Taylor in the right corner from 20 yards at 7:11. The Crimson moved 70 yards on their next possession and Hill ran it in from 2 yards to make it 22-13. Pienias kept the Bruins in it, going 29 yards to Taylor, who became the first Brown receiver to catch three TD passes in a game. Giardi never let up, keeping on a deep reverse for a 12-yard TD at 4:33 to seal it.

"He's awesome," said Brown coach Mickey Kwiatkowski. "It was a game for a long stretch that could have gone the other way," said Crimson coach Joe Restic. "We had an opportunity in the first half to put more points on the board, but it was due more to our not making the play, drawing a penalty or stopping our own drive." It started out as if the Crimson might blow the Bears (0-8, 0-5) into the Charles River.

They moved 78 yards in nine plays and went on top when Giardi plunged over from the 1 at 4:23 the first time this season Harvard scored on its first possession. The Crimson promptly stopped the 'Bears and moved in for a second score, Robb Hirsch's 1-yard leap at 10:11. The Bears had ample opportunities in the second quarter but would up with just 7 points to trail, 13-7, at the half. Scoring Opportunity No. 1 was blunted when safety Rob Santos picked off a 31 -yard pass from Bill Pienias in the end zone.

Brown returned the favor when Rick Britton stepped in front of Kendrick Joyce at the 25 and returned just the third interception of a in blustery Harvard Stadium yesterday. "It's been very frustrating," said Giardi. "We've had games we really thought we could win. We'd just come up with some big mistakes. Today was the first time in a long time we made mistakes we overcame." The Crimson avoided the dubious distinc-ton of being the first team in school history to lose seven straight in a season, though the path from a 27-20 victory over Columbia Sept.

19 to yesterday's workmanlike 29-19 triumph over winless Brown seemed to take an eternity. "I don't know if it was relief," said running back Mike Hill, "because we always knew what we could do. Things just hadn't been going our way the past six weeks." Giardi ran for 103 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns, becoming the first Crimson quarterback since Jim Kubacki in 1976 to gain 100 yards.
