He's going to hit home runs in the center-field bleachers at Fenway. Cooper is hitting over the only thing about Scott is -that he hasn't hit for production like I thought he would. Mo Vaughn is another guy who's going to be a power guy.

He's got 11 home runs in just 58 games. If he hadn't broke his hand and missed all that time, he might have over 20 right now." Cooper going with flow Cooper is taking trade talks surrounding him in stride. "This is Triple A now," he said. "If the Red Sox think they can make a good deal for me, great. That's good for them and me.

But if they want to keep me, that would be great, too." There is growing talk now that Jeff Bagwell, hitting .330 in New Britain, would be given up in a deal. -He had been on Boston's "untouchable" list, but the thinking might have changed. With Wade Boggs liable to play third base for several more years, and Tim Naehring also able to play third, the Sox might be in an eitheror position with Cooper and Bagwell. Short at shortstop The Red Sox have not given the PawSox a decent replacement for Naehring at shortstop. Julius McDougal, a decent second baseman, was shifted to short, but through Thursday he had seven errors in seven games and 22 overall Catcher John Flaherty had hit .312 through his last 30 games (through Thursday) to bring his average up to .251 Tough times for Angel Gon- tEHR RESEARCH AND FIELD TESTING, ANDREWS IS NOW OFFERING A PROTFCB THAT PURIFIES YOUR WATER USING SPACE AGE TECHNOLOGY YOUR PfiOl IQ Jiotiiai i chemical free.

Livernois pitched innings and allowed six hits. Powers impresses 1 Lynchburg manager Gary Allen-son really likes righthander Terry i Powers, chosen in this year's draft from Volunteer Junior College in Tennessee.

"He's got a pretty live fastball," said Allenson. "I used him in relief once, and now he's in my starting rotation after he gave up only one run in five innings in his first start." Allenson is watching the making of a star before his own eyes Greg Blosser Boston's No. 1 pick in last year's draft, who is up to .260 with a Carolina League-leading 14 homers. Blosser, a 6-foot-3-inch, 220-pound lefthanded-hitting right fielder, has been bothered with a sore left arm, which has limited his outfield play. "He's hit about four or five home runs this year that have traveled over 450 feet," said Allenson.

"He seems to be concentrating a little more. He's still 19 years old, but he's getting into the fact he has some great ability and now he's making the most of it" Rennie Scott; from Arkadelphia, has taken over as Lynchburg's closer. Scott has learned a hellacious screwball from former major league pitcher Mike Marshall Jim Byrd has shown exceptional range as Lynchburg's shortstop. Whuewall 1-800-272-SWIM CALL GUNITE CO, INC I CS HOT NEWSgT BRANDS! By Nick Cafardo GLOBE STAFF Ben Mondor, Mike Tamburro and Lou Schweichheimer will go right to heaven. Since the trio became part of the Red Sox family in 1977, the PawSox have won one International League championship (1977) and have had only five seasons above .500.

Either the Red Sox have not stocked Pawtucket with talent, or the talent has been so young it hasn't produced as a unit. Mondor, the PawSox owner, Tamburro, the president, and Schweichheimer, the general manager, fully expected a winner this year. Boston's top hitting prospects were going to light up the skies at McCoy Stadium. But after losing, 2-0, Friday in Syracuse, the PawSox were a miserable 36-61. The team earned run average was 4.74.

Over a recent nine-game stretch, starters amassed a 7.78 ERA. Over the last 38 games, PawSox pitching went 12-26 with a 6.25 ERA. The culprits: Steve Bast, 5.19; Eric Hetzel, 3.69; Joey Johnson, 5.31; John Leister, 5.59; Josias Manzanillo, 5.97; John Trautwein, 6.79; Larry Shikles, 5.44. The bright spots were two lefties out of the pen Hector (Tito) Stewart (44, 3.29 ERA) and Mike Daulton (5-4, 2.66). Also disappointing has been last year's Double A phenom, Daryl Irvine (1-5, 4.19).

Things went so bad for the PawSox that a rare managerial change was made at midseason. Seventy-year-old Johnny Pesky replaced the flamboyant Ed Nottle. "We expected a lot more out of this ballclub," said Tamburro. "The organization went out of its way to give- us the best bunch of prospects. We added two or three veteran players.

And we thought with a veteran pitching staff, we'd be a contending team. "A lot of things went wrong," Tamburro said. "The media might not agree, but it started with the top of this team. We had young talent but we didn't work on that young talent and we didn't teach that young talent. The results showed." Tamburro was referring to the charge that Nottle was a poor instructor, which is why he was replaced.

The oddity of that charge is that Nottle ran the Red Sox' instructional league team for the past few years. If he was that bad, why would he be given that kind of responsibility? Pesky, despite faring no better than Nottle (a 6-17 record), has 1 added enthusiasm to the team. He has managed with a stern hand, constantly getting on players about fundamentals. He will begin morning workouts, stressing fundamentals, when the team returns from its current road trip tomorrow. Pesky makes players hustle out to their positions.

He makes them run out ground balls. There are times he is in the outfield teaching Phil Plantier or Mickey Pina how to hit a cutoff man. "You can see that some of these kids have really started to come Hoftedby Guest Quarters' 'f uiri roiili Aaioctatc Spoiuort AauM light Nit AMfa PhamMtnlktb COTga H. Dib Co. TICKET INFORMATION ft TICKET ORDERS (617)731-4500 (617) 964.730 tit 7 A JOHNNY PESKY Adds enthusiasm on," said Tamburro.

"Mickey Pina needed some one-on-one instruction and he's lifted his average .228. I think Plantier has come a long way. Scott Cooper is a legitimate major league player. Johnny Pesky has been working with these kids one-on-one. He's like a 15-year-old kid.

I hope I have that enthusiasm when I'm 70." Cooper, the PawSox' leading hitter at .284, says life under Pesky has been far different "Mr. Pesky brings in a big league attitude," Cooper said. "Everything he talks about has to do with the big leagues. It seemed like with Ed Nottle, because he never made it to the big leagues, he really didn't know what it took to make it Johnny knows what it takes. He's from the old school.

He expects you to work hard. He really gets upset if you don't score the runner from third." Despite the PawSox being more than 20 games out of first place, attendance is booming at McCoy Stadium. With ticket prices of $4, $3 and $2, the PawSox are averaging 3,800 fans, a figure expected to rise dramatically the rest of the year. The upcoming home series against Columbus is sold out. (That must be because Rick Cerone is on rehab with Columbus.) "That's a tribute to the fans," said Tamburro.

"There was so much made about our good young talent that people come here to see the stars of the future. We're gonna be remembered like the 1974 club when we had Jim Rice, Rick Burleson and Fred Lynn. We had successful players who went on to big major league careers, but we didn't win." Pesky, named the interim manager at the urging of Mondor, says he's enjoying it all. "I'm going to take a good, long, hard look at this at the end of the year and see if I'd like to come back," Pesky said. "Right now I'd say yes.

But I'll have to talk to Ben and the Kenneys Ed Sr. and Ed Jr. and see what their plans are. If I don't come back I'd like to have some say as to who ends up here. I came here for Ben and Mike and Lou.

I want to make sure they're getting the very best because they deserve that. "I'm not pleased with our won-loss record. They're so damned young. They are making kid mistakes. When we get home for 10-12 days, I'm going to have to put them through fundamentals.

Relays, cutoffs.
