The buttons i Vf ewson Memorial Stadium yesterday read, "Usurple the Purple." The Holy Cross Crusaders weren't mtimidated by the slogan, however, as they dominated Bucknell, 42-6.

The 9-0 Crusaders (3-0 Patriot League) extended their winning streak to 18 games, tying the Division 1-AA record, set by Eastern Kentucky. Holy Cross is unbeaten in its last 37 Division 1-AA games. Holy Cross drew first blood on its second possession, (hiving 55 yards on seven plays to take the lead for good on a 16-yard touchdown run around right end by senior fullback Jerome Fuller. Fuller, who carried 27 times for 122 yards, broke the Holy Cross record for 100-yard games in a season with his eighth. Anthony Pignio kicked the extra point.

Seemingly unfazed by the Crusaders' opening score, them point for point, but what he did was out-standing." In the end, it came down to a decision by Brown coach Mickey Kwiatkowski to punt on fourth and 10 from his own 36 with 2:21 left, trailing by 6. The kick traveled to the Crimson 31, and two plays later, Hirsch broke the 36-yard run from his 34 and all the timeouts in the world couldn't help the Bruins (0-8, 0-5). "It was a glaring decision I made at the end," said Kwiatkowski He was asked if he'd second-guess himself. "Absolutely," he said. "If you point to one thing, I think you undermine the whole concept of playing for 60 minutes, but if I don't second-guess that decision, I must be living on Mars.

We had plenty of time. Our field position was lousy. We'd dropped a couple of passes. We had three timeouts left" That decision overshadowed unheralded Brown senior quarterback Paul Pienias, who shined (15 of 30 for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns) as Jeff Barrett (injury) and Nick Richardson (one-game suspension) watched. The play that gave the Bruins life came 4:29 into the third quarter.

They had just answered Mike Giardi's school-record-tying 10th touchdown with a four-play drive topped by Brett Brown's 11-yard run to create a 20-20 tie. Leo Rowland's kickoff was on the ground, and Harvard's Colby Maher and Jim Ellis surrounded the ball as it trickled into the end zone. Maher picked it up, but Rene Ovalle tackled him for a safety and a 22-20 lead. Johnson scored at 14:05 on a 6-yard run and Hirsch broke one around left end for 37 yards and a 35-22 lead, but the Bruins came back. Brown swept left end for a 40-yard gain and Pienias threw 6 yards to Ovalle for a touchdown.

Matt Johnson ran around, over and througn the Bruins to break a Crimson rushing record that had been in the books for 54 years and shatter the league record set just a year ago. Johnson set the table with style and verve in a performance rarely matched on New England soil. The simple statistics are that he carried 30 times for 323 yards, one touchdown and one 2-point conversion and, just for good measure, completed one pass for 28 yards as the Crimson stayed alive in the Ivy chase with a 35-29 triumph. The Crimson standard of 233 yards was established by Vera Struck in the 1937 Princeton game. The Ivy record of 288 was set by Cornell's Scott Oliaro against Yale last year.

Overall, Harvard (3-4-1, 3-1-1 Ivy) ran 61 times for 488 yards, with Robb Hirsch gaining a personal high of 103 yards and putting the game on ice with a 37-yard run in the closing moments. "You don't realize how many yards you're getting until you see the stats at the end," said Johnson, who arrived as a quarterback from Humble, Texas, and became a fullback a year ago. "I don't feel it's that big of a deal as they're making it right now. We were running misdirection." Hirsch had been the key back earlier in the season, but the past two weeks it's been Johnson. "It's just the ebb and flow of the season," said Johnson.

"Different backs get highlighted at different tunes." "You never expect anything like that," said Crimson coach Joe Restic. "How can you be more productive than he was today? A surge by the Holy Cross line blocked the extra-point attempt by Stephen Gierasch. Holy Cross tallied again in the second quarter when senior Tom Ciaccio scored on a quarterback sneak from 1 yard out. The Bucknell defense had stuffed two other attempts from the same distance by Crusader running backs.

Pignio tacked on the extra point, and Holy Cross led, 14-6. On its next possession, Holy Cross added another touchdown on a 12-yard pass from Ciaccio to senior wideout Mark Roman. Roman's touchdown catch was his first of three on the day, tying a Holy Cross record. He totaled six catches for 171 yards. Ciaccio threw for 390 yards and 4 touchdowns, completing 24 of 41 passing attempts.

Even though the Crusaders took a 21-6 lead into the locker room at halftime, they were not satisfied. "The first half, we were not playing Holy Cross football," said Roman. Fuller added that the team was "making too many mistakes." In the second half, Holy Cross scored the same number of points, but played a more intense game. Ciaccio completed his second touchdown pass, to tight end Ron Hooey on third and goal from the 1. Roman's second touchdown reception of the game, a 10-yarder in the fourth quarter, put the game out of reach.

His third score went 95 yards and broke the Patriot League record for longest pass play. While the offense was racking up the points, the Holy Cross defense was forcing Bucknell's John Toman to tie a school record with 11 punts. The only scoring chance Bucknell had after the touchdown drive was thwarted when Matt Nasser recovered Joe Vargo's fumble at the 1 in the fourth quarter. "There is a lot of character on this team," said Ciaccio, "and a lot of heart." rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns as the Big Red rolled over Yale at Ithaca, N.Y. Cornell (4-4, 3-2) amassed 496 yards of total offense while holding Yale (55, 3-2) to 162 yards on the ground, half of what the league's top rushing team had been averaging.

Yale lost the ball on three fumbles and three interceptions. Quarterback Bill Lazor completed 22 of 44 passes for 317 yards, his second consecutive 300-yard game and just the fourth in Cornell history. The only other Cornell passers to top the 300-yard mark were Mark Allen in 1973 and Chris Cochrane in 1989. Lazor connected with Mike Jamin seven times for 161 yards and threw a 9-yard TD pass to Pete Reynolds in the fourth quarter. Princeton 17, Penn 12 Erick Hamilton and Keith Elias each ran for touchdowns as Princeton held off mistake-plagued Penn in Philadelphia.

Hamilton scampered 30 yards for his score and Elias tallied from 1 yard out as the Tigers (7-1, 4-1) beat the Quakers (1-7, 14) for the third straight time. Al Rosier became Dartmouth's career rushing leader and scored two touchdowns yesterday as the Big Green beat Columbia, 28-19, at New York. ivy League Rosier gained 184 rOUndup yards in 33 carries, rais- ing his career total to 1,833 in three seasons. He scored on runs of 2 and 3 yards as the Big Green (5-2-1, 4-0-1) extended their Ivy unbeaten streak to 11 games. Dartmouth- struggled with the surprisingly stubborn Lions, who led, 19-17, late in the third quarter before Rosier's second touchdown capped a 69-yard drive.

Jay Fiedler passed to Mike Bobo for the 2-point conversion and a 25-19 lead. Columbia (1-7, 1-4) has won just five of its last 82 games and has lost 19 of 20 games to the Big Green since 1971, playing a tie in 1983. Fielder completed 21 of 34 passes for 226 yards. Eight of the passes, totaling 96 yards, were caught by Bobo.
