With soft field conditions, Holy Cross entrusted the bulk of the offense to Ciaccio and the air squadron. The Crusaders, who had outscor-ed opponents, 100-21, in the third quarter this season, failed for the first time to register points. Midway through the period, Fordham safety Chris Tirone picked off Ciaccio and galloped 50 yards to 1.

Iasiello's touchdown burst brought the Rams within 5. In the fourth quarter, with the flags of Galway waving Fordham on, Brennan completed a 43-yard pass down the right sideline that moved the Rams within 33 yards of the end. zone. But Holy Cross stuffed Garlick-on an end-around and sophomore Thurman McDaniel intercepted Brennan at the 25. Fordham gained the final possession at its 7 with 1:55 left.

Brennan led the Rams to the 50-yard line, "sparked by a fourth-down 18-yard completion to Garlick. However, Holy Cross bolted together, and Marcus Duckworth fished in his first interception of the season to run out the clock. Fordham dipped to 2-7 (0-5 league) but gained some pride to carry back to the States, while all in Ireland duly agreed with the mayor morning, the Holy Cross football team has insisted this was just another game. "We did not come here for vacation, we came here to play football," said coach Mark Duffner. That was our first job." But with more than 1,200 supporters flocking to Limerick, and the rush of unfamiliar sights and events, this certainly was not just another game.

Holy Cross, billed as the most wondrous football unit ever assembled, was charged with not only winning, but doing so with enough flair and razzmatazz to entertain the traveling faithful as well as the expectant locals. The Crusaders accomplished at least the first objective, securing a 24-19 victory over Fordham that was their 19th straight an NCAA Division 1-AA record and putting a stranglehold on the Patriot League lead at 4-0. Holy Cross (10-0) marched to a 14-0 first-quarter lead pn a 41-yard strike from Tom Ciaccio to Mark Roman and a 3-yard run by Shawn Sierra. The Rams mixed bullish running by Tony lasieilo (33 carries, 128 yards, 2 TDs) and sharp passing by quarterback Gary Brennan to ramble 88 yards and cut it to 14-6. Roman further distanced Holy Cross from Fordham when he cradled a high Ciaccio pass at the Ram 22, cut across midfield, fully stopped at the 10, then sliced back against the grain for his second touchdown.

The Rams' Tom Garlick answered by fleecing the Crusaders' secondary ior a wide-open touchdown with 43 seconds left in the half. But Ciaccio followed with three straight first-down passes to Roman and a completion to sophomore Joe Gallagher with five seconds remaining to set up Anthony Pignio's 35-yard field goal that ended the half at 24-12. While Holy Cross held a comfortable lead, conspicuously absent was its ground game. Fordham coach Larry Glueck had oriented his defensive strategy to stopping the run. Holy Cross' Jerome Fuller, averaging 150 yards, had carried the ball HOLY CROSS, 24-19 Fordham (2-7) 0 12 7 0 19 Holy Cross (10-01 14 10 0 0 24 HC Roman 41 pass from Ciaccio (Pignio kick) HC Sierra 2 run (Pignio kick) Ford lasieilo 2 run (kick failed) HC Roman 28 pass from Ciaccio (Pignio kick) Ford Gartick 22 pass from Brennan (pass failed) T.
