6- Eastern college footballIvy League Harvar more Giardi is a iiiix for Columbia THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE SEPTEMBER 22, 1991 dsoph By Bob Monahan GLOBE STAFF New Harvard quarterback Mike Giardi of Salem doesn't have triskaidekaphobia (fear of the numeral 13). The Crimson, behind the sophomore wearing No. 13, downed Columbia for the 20th time during coach Joe Restic's 21 years, 21-16, before 12,200 crazed fans at Harvard Stadium yesterday. The victory won't be celebrated too long in Cambridge, however, because Harvard did allow 13 points after going up, 21-3. There is plenty of work to be done on defense especially against the pass.

Columbia, in fact, had a first and goal on the Harvard 6 late in the game, but took a 5-yard penalty for delay of game and then threw four incompletions. "When we had first and goal on the 6, we thought run," said Columbia coach Ray Tellier. "Then we got the penalty, and we thought pass. We had four tries, but couldn't get it in. But let's not take away from a pretty neat effort in the season opener by the entire Harvard team, especially Giardi, the first sophomore to start an opening game in the Restic era.

The young man displayed poise and talent, proving that he's a passer, a runner and a thinker which fits right in with Restic's multiflex offense. Giardi threw two scoring passes and scored himself. He hit on 12 of 24 passes for 174 yards and ran well in some clutch situations. "I did feel nervous before the game," said Giardi. "But after the first two series of downs, I felt good and we all got in the flow of the game.

"I was not treated as a sophomore, either. All during the preseason, I was looked at as just one of the guys and I liked that. We don't think seniors, juniors and sophomores. We think as a team and that's good. "Maybe when we were up, 21-3, we let up a bit.

I know we did. But we learned that we still have to improve on offense and defense. We have a win under our belt and we can build on that." Restic said, "We had to work hard because we hurt ourselves making penalties and on pass defense. "Giardi did what we wanted of him, but the critical part of the game was when they had the ball on our 6 with a first down. You have to credit our defense for stopping them and the offense for killing the clock after we got possession." Columbia initiated the scoring at 8:59 of the first period when Tom Boccafola booted a 32-yard field goal.

The Lions had to settle for 3 because the Harvard defense, sparked by end Spencer Neumann, played tough when it had to. Harvard took the following kick-off and put together an 11-play, 65-yard drive that took 4:56. Both teams showed opening-game jitters in the first half, each drawing six penalties. Harvard Jook the second-half kickoff and strung together an eight-play, 82-yard scoring drive that ended at 3:17 when Giardi hooked up with Colby Maher on a 13-yard pass to make it 21-3 the first time since 1989 that a Crimson split end scored. The Eli defense was on the talented Torbert like a glove and forced the Bruins to go to a short-zone pass plan. "They did a good job of blanketing the zones on the field real well," said Brown coach Mickey Kwiat-kowski. "They did a nice job taking Rodd away real early and getting us in position where we couldn't go to him. "They had a good scheme defensively, and athletically they were very good.

I 'think Yale's just tough. said Hubbard. "I saw him get an inside position on me. The ball was thrown low and to the outside. He tried to strip the ball out from under me." Kouri then exploded, just when it appeared he was stopped at the line.

He kept his balance, turned the corner and outran the secondary to give the Elis a 6-0 lead on a 65-yard jaunt. "We had that play all day," said Kouri. "I wasn't hitting it' quick enough, giving the defensive backs time to get over. I got popped pretty good on that one. I was able to disengage and get off to the left." The Bruins penetrated deep again early in the second quarter, but Hubbard smelled out Marcus Malone's sweep and nailed him, forcing Leo Rowland to kick a 22-yard field goal.

Big defensive play No. 2. "They were down there for a few plays," said Hubbard. "They ran a counter play to my side. I just read it well and I got the jump.

I saw the play pretty well." Crawford's turn. He suckered the Brown defense on a second and 8 from his own 31, dropped back and led Adam Lenain with a perfect pass. Lenain had broken clear of defenders Rick Brit-ton and Pat Allman and was home free for a 13-3 lead. "I had a little pressure," said Crawford. "I rolled out, and he picked it up." The Bruins had to settle for a second Rowland field goal and the Elis were up, 13-6, at intermission.

The next big play was a 41-yard pass to Jim Gouveia, who made a leaping catch'- Senior Chad Roghair, making his first varsity start, threw two touchdown passes to lead Princeton over Cornell, 18-0, in an Ivy League Ivy League opener vesterday at Prince-roundup Roghair, who had thrown a total of 15 varsity passes coming into the season, was 21 of 28 for 179 yards. Sophomore Keith Elias made his varsity debut by rushing for 110 yards on 18 carries in Princeton's ball-control offense- Princeton's defense, ranked last in the league in '90, held the Big Red to 189 yards in recording its first shutout since 1985. Princeton, which opened at home for 'the first time in 16 years, had 371 yards total offense. I Cornell, the defending Ivy co-champions, were led by tailback John McNiff, who rushed for 66 yards on 21 carries while playing with an ankle injury. i Dartmouth 21, Penn 15 Matt Brzica threw for one touchdown and ran for one at Philadelphia as Dartmouth recorded its first opening-game victory since 1983.

Brzica's 11-yard run in the third period gave Dartmouth a 21-10 lead. Penn cut it to 21-15 but its last serious threat was stopped by Sal Sciret-to's interception at the Dartmouth 3 with 954 to play, Perm's fourth turnover of the game. fense, but it was the unexpected ability of the Elis to explode on offense that sent them to a 36-20 victory before 11,197 in Yale Bowl. Chris Kouri, who was a fullback in Yale's wishbone offense a year ago, ran out of a tailback spot in a new I-bone attack installed by Carm Cozza and broke a 65-yard touchdown run to get his team untracked. Nick Crawford, who was the tailback a year ago when Darin Kehler was quarterback, moved in to call the signals and unloaded a 60-yard touchdown pass and a 41-yard throw to set up another.

This is a significantly different offense than the one Cozza used to ball-control and option Harvard into submission in The Game last November. Kouri, who had been a fullback since his high school days in Charlotte, N.C., gained 161 yards on 17 carries. "I think it's good for everybody," said Kouri. "I've always had the linebackerdefensive mentality. It was where my heart always was.

I was always running into people. I finally learned to run away from them. "I got here and I was too small to play linebacker. I guess it's like a natural progression. Linebacker to fullback to tailback.

I feel comfortable there. I'm still in the process of learning, but I think now I can call myself a tailback." The defensive game plan was simple.
