With 16 games left in the season, Detroit also needs to pass ninth-place Orlando to get into the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season. "We've got to win nine or 10 games," coach Ron Rothstein said. "If we do get into the playoffs, we'll have earned it and we'll be playing well. I think we'd be tough to beat." In an effort to stay in the playoff race, Rothstein is going to Thomas, who has responded by making 30 of 57 shots in the last two games. "Ronnie was going to me more today, and I was getting good shots," Thomas said.

Besides his scoring, Thomas helped hold fellow All-Star guard Mark Price to two points on 0-for-ll shooting from the field. "I don't remember him ever having a game like that against us," Thomas said of Price, who was benched for most of the second half by Cavaliers coach Lenny Wilkens. "He'll probably never have another one, either." Despite his horrific shooting from the field. Price managed two free throws without a miss, giving him 69 in a row.
