May Limit Crime Stories In Chile SANTIAGO, Chile stories In Chilean newspapers would be limited to 300 words under a pending bill to curb, its author says, the "yellow press." A Conservative deputy, Manuel Montalba Vega, Introduced the bill in Congress. It would: Limit crime and police news to 300 words, with one-column head- In type only one size larger than the text. Require the newspaper to keep a copy, signed by the writer, of stories "affecting the honor or good name of third The copy would be kept available a month for possible court action.

Punishment for exceeding the crime story limit would be a fine of 20,000 to 50.000 pesos (about 645 to 1,613 dollars). Libels in such news would be punishable with im- irisonment and a fine of l.fXJO to 5,000 pesos. So, too, would "falM" lolitical stories which "damage the lonor and good name" of persons mentioned In them. Montalba Vega said his bill was aimed only at newspapers that "exaggerate" police news and falsify stories to "attack others" for their own gain. He said it would not impair freedom of the press, but "purify It of Its imperfections." Two leading Santiago newspapers, El Mcrcurio and El Di.irio Ilustrado.
