In a desolate Australia of the future, an ex-highway cop reluctantly sides with an oil-producing community under attack for its precious ORLANDO, Fla. I made it to Rutberg's house about 9.

He had tickets to the Minnesota Twins' spring training game at Orlando's Tinker Field the next afternoon. "When you get up in the morning," Rutberg said, "go outside and see our azaleas. Our yard looks like the Augusta National on the last day of the Masters." I didn't say anything because I've never gotten a lot of enjoyment out of flowers. This goes back to my youth. My mother loved flowers, but it was me she put in charge of keeping the weeds out of them.

My friends would be out playing ball or stealing hubcaps and my mother would insist I go out and weed her flowers. "But," I would object, "don't you want to experience the joy of nurturing your own flowers?" "Dig," my mother would say, handing me the family hoe. I swore when I left home I never would deal with flowers again, and I haven't. It has been 23 years since I last grasped a hoe handle. Occasionally, I have had the need for a flower.

What I did was go down to the florist and buy one. It's a lot easier on the back. Besides, real men don't go around messing with a bunch of flowers. Can you picture Charles Bronson out in his petunia patch? Tony Randall, maybe, but never Charles Bronson. Rutberg had left for work when I got up the next morning.

I poured a cup of coffee and reached for the paper and read the latest in the Jim and Tammy saga. I think all television evangelists should be arrested for fraud, but we're dealing with flowers here. After the paper, I walked out into Rutberg's yard. I noticed the of eternal life go awry. 'R' 12:00 MAX "Enemy Mine" (1985) Dennis Quaid, Louis Gossett Jr.

I wouldn't know an azalea from a chris chrysan however you spell it but there were white and pink blossoms everywhere I looked. Maybe it was because the winter had seemed to linger longer than usual this year, or maybe it was because I'm growing up, but I found I couldn't take my eyes off the flowers. Spring, in all that it is and promises, was before me.

I walked among the blossoms and even bent down to smell one. A bee tried to fly up one of my nostrils, but fortunately it missed. I found a weed. There wasn't a hoe around, so I pulled it with my hand. My mother would have been proud.

I thought to myself that my stubbornness in regard to flowers likely had caused rhe to miss a lot over the years. I made a silent vow to pay more attention to flowers from now on. When Rutberg came home, he asked, "Did you see the flowers?" "Yeah," I grunted. "Aren't they wonderful?" he went on. "Sure," I said, careful to show no enthusiasm.

"If you like flowers." A man is wise to approach sensitivity one step at a time. I think it was Charles Bronson who said that. Fusco. Alien is also developing the movie. "We'd rather pay for the script and have control," says Bernie.

You might say that Lorimar has the inside track to eventually grab distribution rights for "Alf, the Movie." AND FOR THEIR NEXT: Mikhail Baryshnikov will play a dancer (what else?) in love with an older woman in the temporarily titled "Body Dreams," reports producer Michael Childers. "It's a wonderful love story," says Childers, who is targeting production for next spring. Right now the filmmaker is in London overseeing post-production on his Orion "The Believers." He says of the occult thriller, directed by John Schlesinger, "They're calling it the 'Rosemary's Baby' of the '80's but it's even more terrifying and entertaining." I'll take his word for it. Oscar-winning "Platoon" producer Arnold Kopelson is turning his attention to mystery. He's to write and produce the film version of "Murder in Soho," a first novel by husband-and-wife team Paulette Tumay and Harvey Shapiro, which will be published in August.

It's a go again for the Paramount picture about a rape that bystanders cheered. "Top Gun" female lead, Kelly McGillis, will play the attorney, Jodie Foster the rape victim and Hector Elizondo the district attorney in the drama with shooting to start in Vancouver on April 27. The JaffeLansing production had been scheduled for filming in 1985 -until Jane Fonda bowed out of the part for which McGillis has now been set. Ironically, the project was originally, titled "Witnesses" a tag that died with the birth of the "Witness" picture in which Kelly McGillis was thrust into prominence as the Amish lass with whom Harrison Ford fell in love. EVERYONE'S A STAR: "Alf," the bedraggled creature who came crashing out of space and onto the NBC lineup last fall, is now making tracks for big-screen stardom.

Bernie Brillstein reports that Donald Todd, who serves as story editor on the series, is writing the script for the "Alf" motion picture. It will focus on the temperamental alien's adventures before he hit earth. "Alf," the sitcom, is brought to us by Alien Productions, which consists of Brillstein, Tom Patchett and Paul ATTENTION!
