Bochenek's 23-yard run capped an 84-yard drive the first time Bates had possession of the ball Doug Coupe added a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter to give Bates (1-6) its final margin of victory. The outcome overshadowed a fine defensive performance by John Harb-nett, who had three interceptions for Bowdoin (5-1).

First collegiate TD pass for Roman. First collegiate reception for Riley. "I'm glad these kids had a chance to play," said Duffner. "They work hard, week in, week out" This was the fourth and final -meeting of the schools. The Crusaders won all four, outscoring NU, 153-64.

Yesterday's victory closed out the Crusaders' home season. "It was an emotional game for us, especially our 19 seniors," said By Paul Harber GLOBE STAFF TJ WORCE- STER Holy Cross fin ished off the '80s at Fitton Field yesterday and could have run up that many points against the hapless and hurtin' Northeastern Huskies. However, being a charitable and religious insitution, Holy Cross kept it to 46-13, although it could have been worse. How much worse? "I felt like I was out there with my pants down," said NU coach Paul Pawlak, "You know, exposed." Holy Cross standouts Joe Se-greti (10 carries, 64 yards, 2 TDs), quarterback Tom Ciaccio (12 of 14, 182 yards, 2 TDs) and his crew of primary receivers all sat down in the first half as the Crusaders cruised to their eighth victory in nine games. "They're as good a team as there is in Division 1-AA," said Pawlak.

"You make a mistake and they score a touchdown. You miss a tackle and they are gone." Two vignettes will relate how much Holy Cross dominated. Vignette I Trailing, 35-0, NU finally gets points on the board, a 2-yard TD run by quarterback Byron Hurt It wasn't that the Huskies manufactured a drive. Rotell Searcy ran back a kickoff to the 11-yard line and NU trudged it in. But that didn't stop Holy Cross.

On the point-after, Dave Murphy blocked the kick, Rich Flauto picked it up and ran down the field. Bentley 21, MIT 20 Quarterback Kevin Lucey threw for two touch- downs and the Bentley defense thwarted a 2-point conversion try in the final minute at Cambridge. Bentley was leading, 21-14, when MIT's Tim Day threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to Doug Smith with 35 seconds left But Day was sacked as MIT tried a conversion pass. Colby 43, Middlebury 22 Jon Bart- lett ran for three touchdowns and Chris White ran for two and passed for another, leading Colby (3-4) at Wa-' tervflle, Maine. BarrJett, who ran for 99 yards on 17 carries, scored on runs of 5, 15 and 5 yards and White scored on a 6-yard run in the first quarter and a 2-yard scamper in the final stanza. Brian Coo- ley ran for 94 yards on 14 carries with zone for 2 points.

It's bad when you lose by 33 points. But when you score a TD and the other team scores the extra points, that's bad. "We've been waiting for that to happen," said Holy Cross coach Mark Duffner. "You've got to give the guys credit It was a heads-up play." Vignette II Mercifully, Duffner benches his starters. Holy Cross also set a school mark for wins in a decade (76), eclipsing the record set by the Bill Osmanski-led teams of the '30s. t.i On the positive side for Northeastern, Harold Scott (13 carries, 107 yards) established a school career rushing record of 2,208 yards, breaking the mark of Gary Benoit.

Holy Cross was held scoreless on 'its first possession, and then scored the next six times it had the ball. The rest of the game was walk-ons, third-stringers and killing the clock. It took the Crusaders eight plays to march 70 yards for their first TD a 2-yard run by Segreti that moved him into second place on the all-time Holy Cross TD list with 30. After NU botched the kickoff and Holy Cross recovered on the'29, it took three plays before Segreti rambled 23 yards to make it 14-0. "You can't put yourself down; 14-0, and expect to come back," said Pawlak.

"That's too much." "1 The' next 14 Holy Cross points were scored in a little more than three minutes, on a 2-yard sneak by Ciaccio and a picture-perfect 21-yard, pass from Ciaccio to Jack Lavalette. Northeastern didn't complete a pass until there was 14:15 remaining in the game. At that point, completed three in a row, including a 16-yard TD pass to Calvin Johnspn. The Brains managed to generate a 53-yard drive and ran off 16 pUys. The key play was a faked field goal.

Clark was the holder, but his pass was incomplete. The Crimson were penalized for pass interference, and the Bruins had a first down on the 7. Clark held on to it just long enough on a quarterback sneak to cut the deficit to 14-7 at 2:42 of the second The bumbling Brains saw any hope go out the window in the third quarter. Craig Peck stepped in front of Clark's first pass of the period and turned it over to Perry on the 30. Perry threw a screen pass to Jim Reidy in the left flat, and Reidy completed a 15-yard scoring play for a 21-7 edge.

The Brains coughed up the ball again on an aborted reverse, as Greg Gicewicz fell on it at the 39. The Crimson didn't get untracked on this bid, but were content to let the grains self-destruct again. Brown wound up with fourth and 31 at its own 8, and Paul Sacco's punt ent out of bounds: juBt 14 yards upfield. Yale and Princeton set up a showdown By Joe Concannon GLOBE STAFF PROVIDENCE -The countdown to victory No. 100 for Harvard's Joe Restic took a little bit longer than he or any of those who follow the Crimson would have liked. But it ended yesterday in chilly Brown Stadium (where he began his intercollegiate coaching career) in a game that may be remembered more for the oodles of times the Bruins turned over the football. The record will show that the Crimson took this tedious game, 27-14, over a team that has won just two of its last 17 and beat the Crimson just once (1986) in this decade.

The Crimson were eliminated from any remote hopes of a share of the Ivy championship as Princeton and Yale both won to set up next week's showdown in Palmer Stadium. "This was a big game for us," said Restic, who was on Al Kelley's staff at Brown for three years in the late '50s. "I thought it would be a big-scoring game. They have that capability. "We put some points on the board.

We made some big plays. I think that was the difference. Our defense gave us the ball in pretty good field position and we were able to do something with it." "I thought toward the end we had to make a couple of defensive plays and force a couple of turnovers," said Brown coach John Rosenberg, whose team was intercepted five times and lost a pair of fumbles! "There was just too much distance to overcome, and they didn't do anything to hurt themselves." The Crimson forged a 14-0 lead for the first time since the Army game Sept. 30. The difference then was that the Crimson surrendered 56 points and lost, 56-28.

The first scoring drive was set up when Brown's Greg Giardi fumbled away a punt and Barry Littman recovered on the Brown 43. The Crimson promptly went to work, and Tim Perry dropped a pass off to Silas Myers for the final 11 yards. Things became a trifle bizarre when Steve Dennen's snap sailed over the head of Harvard punter Jt a long of 47. Trinity 35, Amherst 0 Quarterback "Todd Levine threw five touchdown passes and the Trinity defense forced iour turnovers ai Amnersx. Levine's first touchdown came early in the first quarter on a 44-yard pass to Joe Brockmire.

Two of Le- rt vine's scoring passes went to Terry McNamara, both covering 10 yards. Williams 28, Wesleyan 0 Kevin martin passed for one touchdown and ran for another and Neal Chesley rushed for 166 yards at Middlebury, as Williams (7-0) won its 12th in a row. fi Williams opened the scoring on Chris Hevesys 3-yard touchdown run at 12:37 of the second quarter, Springfield 20, CW Post 15 Quar-! terback Bill Burkhead rushed for 115 yards, including a 26-yard scamper for 1 winning touchdown with 1:18 remain- 2 ing at Brookville, NX, snapping a three-game losing streak for Spring-J field (3-6). Tufts 30, Hamilton 28 Quarterback Matt Guanci rushed for 84 yards and passed for another 65 while directing a 2 wishbone offense that racked up 351 yards rushing for Tufts (5-2) at Hamfl- ton, N.Y. C.

Conn. 27, S. Conn. 13 Jason jZiruk rushed for 127 yards and Bob 5 Stefanik added 79 yards at New Brit-ain, Conn, as Central Connecticut (5- 4) won its fourth straight WPI 38, Stony Brook 6 Greg Whitney threw two touchdown passes and Mike Bucci ran for two more scores for Worcester Polytechnic Institute (7-2) at Stony Brook, N.Y. Whitney (18 for 28, 212 yards) threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Mike Long and a 9-yarder to Tom Cummings.

Salisbury St 46, W. Conn. 28 Senior halfback Donald Washington churned out 258 yards for four touchdowns at Danbury, to lead Salisbury (Md.) State (1-6) to its first win of the season. Union 49, Norwich 6 Ryan Mason rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns, sparking undefeated Union at Schenectady, N.Y. Mason became the first Union running back to rush for yards in the 1980s.

'New Haven 62, Virginia Union 25 -Charlie Hill rushed for three touch downs and Pierre Fils caught three touchdown passes to lead New Haven (M) at West Haven, Conn. Darin Kehler threw for 158 yards and rushed for 89 yards as Yale defeated Cornell, 34-19, yesterday in New Haven to remain in a first-place tie in the Ivy League. The fifth straight win for Yale (7-1) sets up a showdown next week at Princeton with a share of the Ivy League title at stake. Cornell (3-4) took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but Yale came back to score 17 straight points in the second quarter. Kehler started the scoring with a 2-yard and threw a 5-yard pass to Chris Kouri for another.

Yale increased its lead to 24-12 late in the third quarter after Kehler's 45-yard pass to Jim Groffen set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Kevin Callahan. Princeton 30, Penn 8 Judd Garrett carried for 115 yards and two touchdowns and Joel Sharp passed for two touchdowns in Philadelphia as the Tigers stayed unbeaten in the Ivy League. Punting problems for Penn set up two of the Tigers' scores en route to a 20-0 halftime lead. A deflected punt by Mike DiMarino set up a 44-yard, eight-play touchdown drive capped by Sharp's 15-yard pass to Steve Masloski with 7:16 remaining in the first quarter. Garrett scored on 1-yard runs twice in the second period, as Princeton went 86 yards on 18 plays for one score and 53 yards on six plays for another with 37 seconds left after a 26-yard punt by the Dartmouth 13, Columbia 12 Robert Bii-ge blocked a punt at the Columbia 13 with 1:40 remaining and Karl Romero kicked a 19-yard field goal with 16 seconds left to save the Big Green at New York.

Birge got boths hands on Matt Pollard's punt, and then recovered the ball. Dartmouth moved the ball to the 2 with 19 seconds remaining, after converting a third-and-3. The Lions built a 12-3 lead as Matt Less caught two passes from Bruce Mayhew, one for 13 yards in second quarter and another for 28 yards in the third quarter. Terry Elliott fumbled a snap on the extra-point attempt after the first touchdown and a rushing attempt failed following the second touchdown. Colgate 46, Lehigh 30 Dave Goodwin passed for 448 yards and three scores, and Jim Tierney ran for three touchdowns at Hamilton, N.Y.

Lehigh's Todd.Brunner set several school season passing records, including touchdowns (24) and yards He completed 38 of 64 passes for 467 yards, all school records, and was intercepted four times.
