Jeff Wiley, HC 14 20 190 Stava Monaco, URI 10 23 172 Receiving By Marvin Pave Globe Staff WORCESTER Coming off an 11-0 season that officially signaled the end of the Age of Lockbaum, you might have been wondering what Holy Cross' football team could possibly do for an encore In Its opener against Rhode Island.

The answer was provided 3 minutes 37 seconds into the game by Crusader split end and heir to Gordie Lockbaum's kick returning Job, Mark Gallagher, who threw two nifty shifts at the Rams en route to a 62-yard punt return TD that got the 49-7 romp off and running. What was notable was that Gallagher, the sophomore from Palmer, was the first Holy Cross player to lug a punt for a score since John Provost did it twice against Brown in 1974. But that wasn't all that was new. How about Crusader sophomore Joe Segreti's 74-yard kickoff return for a touchdown early in the second half, HC's first since John Ahem went 97 yards against Dartmouth in 1979? Unfortunately for URI, what wasn't so new was by the time the first half was over, the Crusaders had racked up four touchdowns and a 28-0 lead. The 12,441 fans at Fitton Field saw the home team rack up 30 first downs and 477 total yards to 15 and 234 for the Rams.

The only consolation for URI was a school record 98-yard pass play from quarterback Steve Monaco to flanker Emerson Foster early in the second half. "We put a lot of pressure on their quarterbacks." said Crusader coach Mark Duffner, "and we tipped a lot of balls. We had to do both because URI has some speedy receivers." Duffher's observation was borne out by the fact that the Crusaders recorded seven sacks, including five on Monaco. The Rams had a couple of opportunities early on roughing the kicker penalties but couldn't capitalize. yards total otlense, while the Crusaders' "i Jeff Wiley completed 10 of 13 passes for 129 yards and his halfbacks racked up 106 yards.

Still, URI had a chance to cut the early lead in half when another roughing the kicker call put the ball at midfield. Mai-, den's Monaco, who had started the game at 9B, came back to lead a drive to the Holy Cross 28. But on third and 10, Monaco never had a chance as defensive left end Craig Callahan blindsided him and tackle Tim Downing recovered the ball at the 42. That was URI's high-water mark for the half, because even though Wiley's ill- timed pass in the end zone on the next Crusader drive on second and goal from the 1-yard line was Intercepted by Tony Adams, it was just a temporary reprieve. As if the Crusaders needed any help, personal foul and pass Interference penal-' ties on the next drive took Holy Cross to the URI 15 where Bradford, the senior from New Orleans, blasted on successive carries to the 1-yard line.

This time, Wiley stayed on terra firma. scoring on a quarterback sneak. But the game's most exciting plays were yet to unfold and they happened In rapid succession. Early in the third quarter, after Wiley had another pass intercepted in the end zone (by Smith) the Rams went 98 yards on the very next play. Actually, Monaco's pass went 20 yards and Foster went the other 78.

Not to be outdone, Segretl of Deny, N.H., bobbled the ensuing kickoff at his 26, recovered and went the distance down the right sideline. "Two cuts and he was i gone," said Duffner. That made it 35-7, and the rest was simply for exercise. Wiley (14-20 190) was pulled early In the second half and Holy Cross which punted once all day was already resting its troops for an invasion of West Point next weekend. Yds 101 89 47 41 No.

Emerson Foster, URI ...2 Msrk Gallagher, HC 7 Randy Pedro, HC 2 Steve Claypoole, URI 3 On the series after Gallagher's twisting run, the first penalty gave URI a first down at the Holy Cross 49. But that drive ended when Rams quarterback Kevin Neville had a pass dropped at the 15 and URI botched a 42-yard field goal try. The Crusaders didn't waste any time in turning on the jets, going 74 yards In 1 1 plays. Fullback Willie Bradford cut left from the 8-yard line to elude defensive end Carl Mackey, then turned the corner and hurdled over Kevin Smith for a 14-0 lead. "Bradford's play In the first half (17 carries, 82 yards) and Gallagher's pass receiving (6 first half catches) plus the pressure we put on their passers set the tempo early," said Duffner.

Coach Frank Tricomi, the Division 3 Coach of the Year, lost six league all-stars while returning only four starters. Tricomi won't have to worry about his quarterback slot, which is filled by senior Tom Lane, but trying to piece the rest of the puzzle together will be tough. Oliver Ames and Mansfield appear to be the dark horses. Oliver Ames returns 12 starters from last year's 4-6 team, which won four of its last six games. Keys to Oliver Ames' success will be 6-1, 180-pound all-league tailback Greg Hohenstein and second-year quarterback Ron Green.

Mansfield boasts senior back Ken Colby, who ran for 17 touchdowns last year, and Junior quarterback Tony Scarpellini. SOUTHEASTERN Losing six league all-stars isn't easy to overcome, but Falmouth coach Ed Winslow will depend on quickness and defense to take the newly combined Southeastern title. Winslow is concerned about a lack of depth. Bright spots are tackle Dan Bohnenberger, the lone returning league all-star, running back Jason Andrade, a speedy hurdler in track, and junior Troy Mills, a 6-2. 205-pound linebacker.

Although Bishop Feehan returns 12 starters and 15 seniors, you won't catch coach Paul O'Boy making predictions. "We looked good on paper last year, and then finished 5-5," said O'Boy. Bishop Feehan features league all-star halfback Mike Ingram, the key in a wishbone offense. Ingram will make his way behind a mostly senior line averaging 6 feet and 200 pounds. Barnstable could contend, but quarterback Jordan Sullivan will have to produce.

Jordan rushedor more than 1 ,000 yards in 1987. Rozzi to maintain that winning tradition. DUAL COUNTY Bostin Latin will not be the same undefeated (8-0-2) team that captured the league crown last season. Latin lost Kevin McGonagle, the top scorer in the division, and Pat McKeigue, who threw for 11 touchdowns. But with Walter Apperwhite, an all-league lineman, and Kevin Dyer, a 6-2, 220-pound fullback, returning, Latin Just might hold onto the title.

Lincoln-Sudbury seems to have the wheels In the backfield to run by the rest of the league, but it's a bit outsized in most departments. A major part of the running machine is Andy Willis, a back who ran for 600 yards with 10 touchdowns last year and returned kicks and punts. Acton-Boxboro, with 1 1 returning starters (six on offense), can't be overlooked. Quarterback John Winders will be airing it out while the search goes on for defensive front people. HOCKOMOCK LEAGUE Unlike last year, Foxboro will perform without a star.

Don't drop the curtain just yet. though, because odds are Foxboro will still be strong. Foxboro must replace halfback Lamar Newsome, the 1987 Division 3 Player of the Year, who is a freshman at the University of Massachusetts. Foxboro still has two all-stars in 6-3, 230-pound right guard Tom Nalen and tailback Chris Cady, a sprinter who gained more than 1,100 yards last season. Foxboro also returns senior quarterback Danny Sullivan, a 6-0, 172-pounder who threw 11 touchdown passes.

For the past three years. North Attleboro has had a chance for the title in its last league game, and for three straight years. It has come up short. "We lost out. sure." said coach Ray Beaupre, "but second place is better than ninth." With talent returning, Foxboro looks to be retracing its steps toward another Super Bowl. However, it will face a challenge tiom Hockomock League foe North Attleboro, as well Cape Ann League representative Pentucket. Pen-Ucket has not always fared well, but is the favorite to win the league title. CAPE ANN A logjam among Amesbury, Triton and Pentucket ijrould not be surprising. Pentucket gets the nod as the team to beat because of Mike McCoy, a 6-foot senior fullback, and junior Steve Puleo, a 6-0 tailback.

Together, they ran for more than 1,500 yards last year. i "I guarantee you'll hear a lot from these two kids." beamed coach Steve Hayden. Amesbury. led by all-league back Eric Sevigny and a defense full of returning starters, could Jump from eighth place to first. "Probably one of the biggest things we have going for us is the defense.

We have a lot back in the secondary and linebacker spots," said coach Dave Bailey. Coping with the loss of four league all-stars will make things a bit tough for Triton, but it still has potential. "We've got our work cut out for us. We lost a lot of key people," said coach Ron Corcoran. I Much of that work looks to be done in the trench-s, where the offensive line, averaging about 6-0, 200 pounds, will try to open holes for 6-1, 215-pound fullback Steve Burns.
