"That late first-half defensive stand Harvard was held on fourth and goal from the 5 when Yohe's pass to Mark Bianchi was incomplete was the moment our defense grew up," said UMass coach Jim Reid. Harvard came out of the gate quickly, going 80 yards in 10 plays the first time it had the ball, with Yohe going over from the 1. Palazzi then directed UMass on an eight-play, 77-yard drive with the capper a 15-yard pass to Mike Tobin. That set the stage for Harvard's second drive, which followed a UMass fumble of a punt at the Minuteman 15 and Mitchell's first heroics. "We worked on the wedge all week," said Mitchell (5 catches, 131 yards) and all I did was follow it and cut upfield." Kevin Smellie then dashed 18 yards to the 1, from where Jim Pastorlck took it in.

With 5:12 left in the half, UMass' balanced attack produced a third score, Palazzi to Ken Gir-ouard on a slick left-to-right pattern from the 6, but Chris Re-zendes' interception led to the late Harvard drive that was halted at the 5. Restic could have gone for the field goal, but said after the game, "I would do the same thing again." Williams' interception at his 37 on Harvard's first drive of the second half plus a Crimson pil-ing-on penalty gave UMass a first down at the Crimson 46 and led to Bonvini's field goal. And when Harvard came back to close to within 3 points, that man Mitchell came through with the KO punch. "I've been pushing him since the spring because his talent wasn't coming out," said Reid. Mitchell let it all hang out By Marvin Pave Globe Staff Chip Mitchell saved his "career" performance for the folks at Harvard Stadium yesterday as the University of Massachusetts senior split end and kick returner delivered a 1-2 punch that sent the Crimson to the canvas in a 45-28 Minuteman victory.

Mitchell's best-ever 69-yard second-quarter kickoff return to the Harvard 19 set up UMass' tying touchdown (14-14) Just 25 seconds after Harvard quarterback Tom Yohe's touchdown sneak. But it was Mitchell's 78-yard TD reception (another career best) from Dave Palazzi, putting UMass ahead. 31-21, with 3:30 to play in the third quarter, that really squashed Harvard's momentum. The Crimson had just scored on a Yohe-to-Don Gajewski 9-yard flip that was tipped by UMass defender Pat Doran but corraled by Gajewski to close the gap to 24-21 In less than a minute, Mitchell, who was converted from tailback in the spring, had shocked Harvard again. On second and 10 from his 22, Palazzi feathered a perfect lead pass to Mitchell at the Harvard 40.

Mitchell, who had been bumped by cornerback Con' Tha-bit, then took off for an eaf-y romp into the end zone. It was all UMass after that, as Harvard was blitzed for the most points in a game since a 51-20 loss to Princeton in 1969. "Those two plays really broke our backs," said Harvard coach Joe Restic, who got big efforts from Yohe (who went over the career passing mark with a 312-yard day) and halfback Tony Hinz, who rushed for 105 yards and caught 6 passes for 152 more. But patient UMass signal caller Palazzi, who missed by 1 yard his fourth consecutive 200-yard passing game, had it when it counted 4 rW Harvard's Tony Hinz leaps high to Doran (46) and Jerome Bledsoe can I 'K i -3 I i '4 i "Ca i i I WSSpajajTv i 1 snare a pass from Tom Yohe as only watch. oly Cross Penn, 38-35 Bucknell 7 10 3 IS 35 Penn 3 21 7 7 3 FG Frledenberg, 21 Guerrini 9 pass from Auchenbach (Bar-imoklck) Keys 1 run (Friedenbera kick) UConn enjoys field day, 41-0 Overmatched Yale squad absorbs worst loss at home since 1954 at Harvard Stadium, Brighton UMass (2-1) 7 14 10 14 45 Harvard (1-1) 7 7 7 728 Tom Yohe 1 run (Alan Hall kick) Mike Tobtn 17 pass from Dave Palazzi (SUvk Bonvinl kick) Yohe 1 run (Hall kick) Jim Pastorlck 1 run (Bonvinl kick) Ken Qlrouard 6 pass from Palazzi (Bonvinl kick) Bonvinl 28 FQ Don Gajewski 9 pass from Yohe (Hall kick) Mitchell 78 pass from Palazzi (Bonvinl kick) Kevin Smetlle 15 run (Bonvinl kick) David Mitchell 13 run (Bonvinl kick) Tony Hlnz 46 pass from Yohe (Hall kick) Attendance 7500 TEAM STATISTICS First Downs 26 26 Rushes-yards 58-326 45-200 Passing yards 199 312 Return yards 0 20 Passes 10-19-1 20-36-1 Punts FumbkM-lost 1-1 2-0 Penalties-yards 2-15 5-42 INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS Rushing AM.

It was a redemption day of sorts for the UMass defense, which had given up 86 points and 1,177 yards in its first two games. UMass held Harvard deep Jn its territory late in the first half to preserve a 21-14 lead, then halted another drive on Vaughn Williams' interception that led to a Silvio Bonvinl field goal of 29 30-26 the left sideline through a purple and orange entourage to score the winning touchdown. As Donovan turned around after crossing the goal line, he was engulfed by his exultant teammates, who had just pulled off one of the most incredible comebacks in Crusader history. The catatonic Palmer Stadium crowd just stared and stared and stared: Holy Cross 30, Princeton 26, 0:00 remaining.

"I don't know if anybody in America has ever seen a more exciting game than that, with every player playing his heart out every second," said Crusader coach Mark Duffner. "Believe it or not, that's a designed play, and we just executed it as well as we possibly could." The play that will forever be given a special page in the Holy Cross playbook a play aptly and succinctly named "Kickoff Return Touchdown" provided an apt if not quite succinct climax to a game that featured more odd turns and quirks than Howard Hughes. Just when the Crusaders (2-2) appeared to have taken control of the game in the second half with a post-intermission field goal to make it 17-13, the visitors turned the ball over on four straight possessions. The first gaffe, a fumble at the Holy Cross 41, led to a Tiger drive finished off by a 15-yard Jason Garrett-to-Dave Wix touchdown pass to make it 20-17. Two interceptions later, Princeton's Chris Lutz put up a 34-yard field goal to lift the margin to 23-17.

The Crusaders regained control again with an 83-yard touchdown drive keyed by a pass interference call against the Tigers on fourth and 18 at the Holy Cross 39. But even after tailback Joe Segretl (110 yards) burst through for the 5-yard go-ahead score with 1:13 left, Princeton fought back. Trailing, 24-23, Garrett took his team from its own 30 to the Holy Cross 18 in eight plays to set up Lutz' apparent game-winner. "Our guys have a lot of bitterness right now." said dazed Princeton coach Steve Tosches. "Each week from now on we're going to have to take that bitterness out on every one of our opponents.

They'll have to pay." In jujt two blinks of light, the Tigers have rung up quite a bill. "We came out and made a couple of big plays in the third quarter and that ended it." UConn took a 10-0 lead early in the second when Gallaher scored on a 7-yard run to cap off a 12-play, 66-yard drive. The big play on the drive was a fake punt on fourth and 1 from the UConn 43.

The ball was snapped to the up back. Hanover, resident Mark Landolfi, a junior fullback, scampered 15 yards for a first down. Gallaher scored his second touchdown with two minutes left in the first half on a 4-yard run. The senior carried four times on the five-play drive for 38 yards, including a 20-yard burst up the middle on the first play. "I am disappointed with our defense," said Cozza.

"And our offense didn't control the ball at all." steals it, By Sean O'Sullivan Special to the Globe PRINCETON, N.J. The ritual is one of those futile unpleasan-tries of life that just have to be performed applying for a job you know has already been given to the boss' nephew, or trying to catch a plane in the middle of Labor Day weekend. So when the Holy Cross kick-return team took the field yesterday, trailing Princeton by 2 points with two seconds left, well, 11 men from Worcester were looking for the bright side during a solar eclipse. After all, the Tigers had ust kicked a go-ahead 35-yard field goal and had ripped the momentum and emotion onto their side of the gridiron. Nothing left but a tedious formality.

Lafayette sends Columbia to 43d straight loss, 49-3 By Anthony Rieber Contributing Reporter NEW HAVEN One series told the story of the University of Connecticut's 41-0 mugging of Yale yesterday at Yale Bowl.

UConn had just scored to take a 24-0 lead. Tailback Kevin Brice took a handoff. He started around right end, saw no daylight, and attempted to turn back to the left. But Brice was met and hugged to the ground by Huskie lineman Lyndon Johnson. Yale quarterback Mark Bru-baker was picked off on the next play by cornerback Rusty Neal.

Neal returned the interception 58 yards for an apparent touchdown, but a Huskie clip at the 2-yard line gave UConn the ball on the Yale 17. No matter, though. UConn ran three plays and scored on a 4-yard pass from Matt DeGennaro (20 for 27. 143 yards) to Glenn Antrum. Yale (0-1-1), which was playing without starting quarterback Bob Verduzco (torn knee ligaments), suffered its worst beating at Yale Bowl since 1954.

Brubaker completed just 8 of 24 passes for 111 yards with 4 interceptions. "We had obvious problems moving the ball, and they were very good," said Yale coach Carm Cozza. "They did everything right and we did everything wrong." UConn tailbacks Jeff Gallaher and George Boothe combined for 215 yards and 4 touchdowns. Gallaher was 19 for 101 with three short touchdown runs, while Boothe gained 114 yards on 13 carries, including a 56-yard touchdown run for UConn's last score. "The offensive line did a real good job and all six of our defensive lineman played pretty well against a good Yale offense," said UConn coach Tom Jackson.

UConn (2-1) took a 17-0 lead at the half after holding Yale backs to 16 yards on 19 carries. Yale took the second-half kickoff but turned over the ball as Brice fumbled at his own 32. UConn marched in for a touchdown on just four plays, with Gallager scoring from 1 yard out. From Wire Services Frank Baur completed 17 of 22 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns including a 98-yard scoring pass that was the longest in school history as Lafayette beat Columbia, 49-3, at New York yesterday, for the Lions' 43d consecutive defeat. Baur, who leads Division 1-AA in passing efficiency, completed 10 consecutive tosses, including the 98-yarder to Maurice Caldwell.

Columbia, winless in 46 games since Oct. 15, 1983. made six turnovers. Lafayette, averaging 43.7 points a game, gained 408 yards just in the first half. The Leopards opened a 21-3 lead in the first quarter.

Tony Miller started the scoring on a 2-yard run and Baur threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Caldwell to give the Leopards a 14-0 lead. CORNELL 17, COLGATE 14 Sco Malaga rushed for a career-high 118 yards and a touch.
