IVY LEAGUE SLMIAL LEAGUE Maine BU picks off Harvard win grabs By Joe Concannon Globe Staff There aren't too many football games these days between the area's Beanpot teams. Harvard hadn't played Boston University since 1979, and BU refuses to put Northeastern on its schedule. Boston College became too good, and BU severed that relationship 25 years ago. It's all too bad, in a way, because a little activity on the home front can warm up a cool, windy and drizzly day. 1 That's how it was yesterday at Harvard Stadium as BU held on thanks to Mike White's interception of Rod MacLeod's two-point conversion attempt with 3:42 remaining to escape with a 24-23 victory in a lively game that starteo) out as though it might be a rout for the Terriers.

They saw a lead of 21-0 shrink to 21-17, and a 24-17 lead evaporate when the Crimson scored on MacLeod's 2-yard sweep to pull within a point. The game ended with a minor skirmish that started when the Crimson's Jim Smith nailed BU quarterback Jim Schuman from the blind side after a handoff on the final play. "It's a play where I take a reverse pivot," said Schuman, who set a BU season record of 2,260 yards on the strength of his 19 completions for 269 yards and three touchdowns. "I handed it off and followed it up the line of I felt a shot at the back of my neck." "I just don't like to see something like that happen at the end," said Crimson coach Joe Restic, whose team lost its sixth game in eight decisions. "I can see how something like that can happen.

I don't think it takes anything away from BU or from us. One thing that stands out is the way we battled back. To come back and make a game of it at the end says something about our team." The interception that settled it came when White stepped In front of the By Marvin Pave Globe Staff PROVIDENCE On a day when the Maine offense couldn't get rolling for the first 35 minutes, it took a defensive play by sophomore safety Claude Pettaway early in the third quarter to send the Black Bears on their way to a 37-10 victory over winless Brown yesterday. It was a 3-3 game when Pettaway picked off Dan Rukamp's look-in pass at the Brown 30. Six plays later, freshman Davie Holliday burst over from the 4 and Trent Cockayne's extra point put the visitors ahead.

10-3. It didn't get much better for Brown (0-7-1) after that. The Bruins were intercepted three more times in the quarter with the last by linebackercaptain Nick Penna off Danny Clark deep in Brown territory leading to another Maine touchdown by Holliday and a 16-3 lead. "Our defense was responsible for giving us a complete momentum swing," said Maine coach Tim Murphy. Maine's victory, coupled with BU's decision over Harvard, gives the Yankee Conference a 14-4 margin over Ivy League opposition the last three seasons.

Brown closed within 16-10 on the final play of the third quarter when Clark drove his team 57 yards in just four plays and Lane Wood hit the middle for an 8-yard TD. But the Black Bears (who broke a two-game losing streak) came right back on their next possession to march 68 yards in 14 plays with Mike Buck hitting Jeff Knox in the right corner of the end zone. "They Maine just buckled it up on that drive," said Brown Crimson's outstand Maine, 37-10 I W- WW. JUL 111.11 Mill I I I 1 Ay X. v.

Their troubles started on the initial possession when Alan Hall shanked a punt that carried just 2 yards and gave the Terriers the ball at the Harvard 47. Schuman completed an 18-yard pass to Steve Kennelley for a first down at the 18, but two plays later. Rick Mclntire intercepted at the 1 1 to blunt this drive. The Crimson continued to endure frustration, though, as Robert Talley picked off a MacLeod pass and returned it to the 26. Schuman led Kennelley past defender Kelvin Hawkins on a 24-yard scoring pass at 6:47 of the period for a 7-0 lead.

The 3-6 Terriers, who had won just three previous games in 1 1 tries against the Crimson, threatened to make it a rout with two early touchdowns in the second period. Schuman, who became the BU career leader for touchdown passes in a season when he completed his third of the half, had 10 completions in 17 attempts for 159 yards and thrett touchdowns in the first 30 minutes. Harvard's Hall kicked field goals of 47 and 22 yards bt fore time ran out In the half, and the Crimson came out of intermission looking at a 21-6 deficit but controlled the third period. MacLeod, who stepped in to replace the injured Tom Yohe a week ago against Brown, completed 17 of 29 passes for 241 touchdowns, and even though he was intercepted four times, he dictated the second half. The four in terceptions came in the first half, when he completed only 9 of 17 for 135 yards.

For one thing, Maine's receivers handled the football as if they were entered in a greased-pig contest.

Quarterback Buck was 2 for 8 but deserved better. "We were completely outplayed, outcoached and outexecuted in the first half," said Murphy. "Most of what I told our guys at halftime you couldn't print. But you also have to give credit to Brown the way they came out." i Brown had its chances for more in the first half, and although two drives stalled at the Maine 23 and 29 (Lins missed field goal attempts), the Bruin defense got a good breather. Brown's offense controlled the ball for 19 minutes in the half, thanks to Rukamp's running (63 yards, 16 carries) and passing (4 of 6, 52 yards).

But Maine came back on the opening drive of the second half to tie the score on Cockayne's 39-yard field goal, setting the stage for Pettaway's first interception of the year. "He's just a sophomore, but he's started 16 straight games and he's our best defensive back," said Murphy. "And Penna was all over the field in the second half. He's a catalyst. We needed that lift from our defense." Globe staff photoTom Herde Boston University's Steve Kennelley tries to hurdle over Harvard's Tony Molinarl.
