lav. 104 Boston Sunday Globe December 8, 1973 f. Jt V. i. Extraordinary young giant hulking about MIT campus "I'm content, right now, doing the amateur productions here.

I'm in the Musical Theatre Guild. Our fall production was 'Man of La I played Dr. Sanson Carrasco. One of the reasons I got the part was my size. They thought I'd be a perfect Knight of the Mirror.

I make a very imposing figure in armor. "I haven't done that much' acting. I'm learning a lot about acting by being in the guild I'm a singer first, an actor second. It took a lot of work to project Carrasco as he should be done. He's the intithesis to Quixote.

It's almost a villain part. The transition from a prisoner to a man of learning is a difficult one. "Singing in Kresge is like singing into a blank hole. I was singing a solo in Ruddigore. I wasn't getting any feedback.

A member of the cast was downstairs. He said when I was singing the solo that I filled all of the downstairs as well. I have to be careful when I'm singing a duet so I don't overpower the female singer." Van Lidth de Jeude has sung in six languages. He is a native of Holland and he came to this country at age three. "Eventually," he says, "I will have to make a decision.

After I'm through here, I may study voice. As to what I'll finally do, I don't know. There are too many "Sometimes, I wonder myself. You have a lot of fun. At the end of a semester, it's hard I've been really busy.

I had the production. I've worked hard at wrestling. I'd like to win a New England championship. As to the spring production, I don't know, It'll depend on the choice of the show and available parts. I might pass this one up and try and get a very good summer job and do some interesting work." ii if --rniT Mil i -mil ir "Dr.

Carrasco was played with ultimate style by Erland van Lidth de Jeude, who has no equal in the cast with respect to both power and stage presence. His imposing form and booming voice were well suited to his portrayal of 'a itwn who carries his self-importance as though he were afraid of breaking From a review of MIT Musical Theatre Guild production of "Man of LaMancha." By Joe Concannon, Globe Staff He stands 6 -feet 6 and he weighs 330 pounds. He talks with a lingering trace of a dutch accent and he has a voice that can cut through the seeming emptiness of Kresge Auditorium when he acts or sings on stage. He was perfectly cast as Dr. Sanson Carrasco in "Man of LaMancha." He has a brown belt in judo and he is a heavyweight wrestler on the MIT team.

They had to cut apart two size 44 uniforms and sew them together last year as a size 56 so he could compete. He has a special-order size 54 suit that he wears this season and he wears size 16 Triple shoes. He won the Greater Boston championship last year as a freshman, and he is too big and too strong to work out seriously with the other members of the team. He is looking forward to practicing with football player Jim Nance in the offseason. He is majoring in computer science, and he may someday decide to study voice.

Erland van Lidth de Jeude is a rather extraordinary young man, and he talks with all the energy and enthusiasm he puts into everything he does. "I'm the type of person," he says, "who is interested in anything. Things fascinate me easily." He is, in short, an extrovert who loves life. "He was," says MIT wrestling coach Wil Chassey, "relatively unitiated as a wrestler. One of the things that helped a lot was that he had a judo background.

The size makes him a big threat. If we can teach him enough, he should be a threat in New England wrestling, at least. He's at the point right now where he's a competent wrestler. "He's getting a lot of help from the other guys on the team. The whole group sees the potential of the guy.

We'll probably pick up four or five forfeits. If a team has a 190-pound wrestler, the coach usually refuses to let him wrestle against him because of the weight differential. As he picks up technique, he could be unbeatable." "I've always been big," says Arland. "When I was in the fourth grade, I was the biggest kid in grade school. When I was in the 10th grade, I was the biggest kid in the high school.

In high school, I had been in football and track. We moved to Mount Vernon, N.H. after my freshman year (in Ridgefield, "They didn't have a wrestling team. (He attended Mllford Area High). Wrestling never occurred to me.

I went through rush week here. I pledged Beta Theta Pi fraternity and a lot of the guys there were on the wrestling team. Because of my size, they talked to me about the team. A lot of people my size don't do a lot with athletics. It's too bad.

had a brown belt in judo. I was looking for another sport. I was thinking of taking up rowing. I adan-doned track. After wrestling, it seemed boring.

Since league play was formalized in 1956, orjy Archie Roberts of Columbia, Ed Marinaro of Cornell and Dick Jauron of Yale have been three-time choices. Csatari was a first-team choice on the ballots of all seven opposing coaches at defensive end, while Lally was a unanimous choice at linebacker. Clune, a unanimous pick last year and the holder of most Ivy receiving records, fell one vote short of unanimity at split end.

Pat Mclnally, Harvard's junior split end, was a unanimous selection. Dave St. Pierre, Harvard senior defensive back, was a vote short of unanimous selection. They had a little PDP 11 at the school. It was a mini-computer. I used to get assignments to write a program. I'd go to bed and wake up in the middle of the night and the solution would suddenly come to me. "That's how I got into computer science.

"I had a boy soprano voice. When it changed, I went out for the school chorus. I played Hansel in "Hansel and Gretel." I played the snowman in "Merry Christmas Mr. Snowman." They gave me my choice: Santa Claus or the Snowman. I powdered my face and hair and they ran a picture of me.

It was a white blur with a black hat on. "I haven't had any voice training. I tried out for the All State Chorus in Connecticut. I placed first. I moved to New Hampshire and tried out again.
